  • MORE INFOS IN THE DESCRIPTION DOWN BELOW :
These are just examples of regular and daily French Meals. Of course it varies depending on each families !
In France, people eat only sweet breakfast...
We don't always all eat the same, but it's a fact that in France we usually have an appetizer, main course, cheese with bread, a dessert, and a short coffee that several people like to have to digest better.
Important Fact : In France an "Entrée" means an Appetizer... Cause entrée means entrance, so the entrance, the start of the meal.
When we invite friends or family to eat, we usually always start with Apéritif, also called Apéro. It is any type of alcohol or sweet wine, served with a bunch of little finger food.
We also drink wine while eating (only for special events, dinner with friends, or in restaurants).
And we do eat bread with dishes we have. Usually eaten with the leftover sauce of every dish.
We do not eat Cheese with crackers ever... Only with bread !
Cheese and Wine aren't a fancy thing like it is in America ! In France, you can buy a whole bottle of wine from 3 euros, and a whole cheese from 1 or 2 euros. For us it refers more to farmers than "bougie" style. Which by the way, bougie in french means candle...
In France we do not tip in restaurants ! Waiters are getting paid by their employer, as it should be. And French restaurants aren't expensive as it is in USA. In small cities of France, you can easily find whole meals (entrée, plat, dessert) from 15 or 20 euros.
Rich and Fancy restaurants are more of a Paris thing. Not France... and Paris isn't representative of France...
Le "trou normand" is alcohol mixed with ice cream. It's used to digest better and faster between the different dishes. But it's not something usual.
In restaurants, the waiters will ask if you prefer to get a "fromage blanc" or "fromage sec", which literally means White cheese or Dry cheese. The dry cheese would be a plate with different type of cheese. And the white cheese is close to yogurt but more thick. We usually eat it with cream and sugar, or with salt and pepper for those who prefer a savory version.
At the end of each meal, you can get an espresso. Which is a shot of coffee. It usually helps to digest.
But you can get it regular or decafeiné (decaf). So with no caffeine.
Le digestif is a shot of alcohol served sometimes at the end of the meal to again help digest. Some are very strong, and others are very sweet.
