2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country | The On-Road Focused Off-Roader

- Volvo has has a long history of making station wagons and off road focused Cross Country wagons as well. For 2020 they are bucking the trend by bringing America more wagon variants than anyone else. But is the new V60 Cross Country the off road wagon for my demographic?

HugFest the new one looks kinda hideous
For a hatchback/wagon fan, this has the nicest exterior styling out of any vehicle on the road. The old style looked frumpy, and they've totally fixed it with this update.
@@Jinnyjammywhammy Theyre obviously not as reliable as most Japanese brands, but more reliable than German junk. I get a warranty with any vehicle I purchase so reliability is irrelevant because I dont keep them beyond that. Not my daily drivers anyways.
Check out the Panamera Sport Turismo for exterior styling that's better.

Loving my new 2020 V60 Cross Country. Now, I'm officially a former Outback owner.
How has the Volvo been doing for you?
You finally made it to my neck of the woods, and my wife and I both drive the older version of the V60 CC. Love your reviews and channel
Volvo + Estate + Cross Country = Insane Awesome!
That car was designed for me. It represents everything I want!
One reason I bought my 2017 A4 allroad over the V60 Cross Country, was because of the ride. My A4 allroad came standard with true adaptive dampers, so you can tailor the ride to your comfort. When I test drove the Volvo V60 CC it was too firm a ride for me. I loved the look of the Volvo, but I wish it was a little more supple on rough pavement. I now have over 30K miles on the allroad and, so far, I haven't had any issues with it.
IMO auto manufacturers have forgotten how, or don't care how, to make a comfortable ride anymore. Read Consumer Reports and it feels like at least 75% of the reviews say the same thing: "...but the ride can be harsh over bumps". My old Acura TL had a near-perfect balance of sporty ride and smooth suspension. Then a few years ago I bought a Honda Accord and it practically rattled the teeth out of my head, all in the name of "handling". It used to be, you could get both.
Good luck with the suspension. Hopefully Audi re-engineered that system because it was a NIGHTMARE in earlier Allroad models. German cars out of warranty are only for the brave or wealthy. Hopefully you are both.
Maybe what you need is to get rid of those 20 inch rims and tires!
There is not much cushioning due to shorter sidewall.
But maybe you think looks are more important than practicality.
@@Mr21scottthe large rims with slim tyres helps a lot. Marketing for fools.
What a beautiful wagon. Volvo is in a roll!
I would buy a Volvo S-60 in a heartbeat ... but I don't need a second vehicle. Loving my V60 CC.

I think I’d be happy in either the V60 Cross Country or the A4 Allroad. But I think I’d agree with you. Given the choice of these two and the V90 Cross Country, I’d easily choose the V90. More than the reasons you described, it also looks best, with the best proportions.
Alex: you did not get into enough detail about the engineering of this vehicle-the aluminum suspension design , the body adhesives, the welding, etc. That explains the price difference versus Subaru, which justifies the price delta.
Yes, it is heavy for a smaller wagon when the Regal TourX is just over 3,700 lbs
Yes, and explains why the body integrity of Volvos is worth the investment because they don't rust out over decades, like Buicks do...
The Subaru is known as a rust bucket in Canada due to its lack of good corrosion protection. Volvo has excellent corrosion protection which is an integral part of the manufacturing process, and not just an add on. That is why I am now a 5 time Volvo owner.
I hope they bring the S60XC back as well. I always liked that and the Outback SUS.
I want a V60 Wagon since it’s length is close enough to my 1983 245 GL Volvo Wagon. Sort of old tech with new tech side by side.
Those old Volvo wagons were great.
In the Uk the Volvo is a 3 year warranty, the outback is 5 years. After owning 3 volvos, currently owning an A4 and having had the XC90 hybrid on hire, I have just bought an Outback.
Great review. Can't wait to hear your impressions of the V60 Polestar Engineered.
I am with you hope Volvo put the T6 in the Cross Country V60 and I will consider buying it in few years.
This. I drove one and it's not slow, but the T6 would be night and day. I drove an S60 T6 and it was fantastic.
The TourX FTW! Regal TourX 2.0T with torque vectoring AWD is putting down same 295 lb-ft of torque as T6.
The T6 transmission shiftings aren't very smooth. The T5 transmission shiftings are much better.
Great video. Great car. I bought one!

Lord Commander Manny the Regal has been cancelled.
I’m a wagon fan and also part of that target demographic (frequent driving in snow, up and through mountains in the Sierra Nevada, but most time spent on city streets). I got the 2017 Audi Allroad and it’s perfect for me. At the time, the V60 Cross Country was not yet available and I was comparing the Audi and the V90, but the Audi won out thanks to its in-cabin tech and price. Funny enough, it’ll be time to start looking again in a few months (I lease) and I’m weighing either a 2020 Allroad, or jumping ship to Subaru and an Outback XT. While the driving experience will never quite be the same, the new Outbacks have some pretty nice standard features when specced out, while still being a great deal cheaper than the Allroad. Ultimately I’ll see what the new Allroad offers at which trim levels and prices but ya seem to get much more bang for your buck on the newer Outbacks vs. the pre-2020 ones.
On the cheap look at Regal TourX 2.0T with torque vectoring AWD for low US$20's.
Great looking car. Far better than the Audi. I'm an Outback owner and looking for a wagon without a CVT.
Audi has dsg, or hp8zf, great gearboxes.
It's a huge price jump from the Outback to the V60, only the rich won't care.
Regal TourX 2.0T with torque vectoring AWD for low $20's is the steal here!
not true. I yook out loan because I do care! V60 CC is better than the Outback.
It looks good but the Outback 2.4t is more spacious & a better value buy for me Nice review
Great Review!
Lol in the UK the V60/S60 are large family cars!
I must say the infotainment system is fast, acurate and very intuitive.
I dare say it is the most up to date infotainment system available and certainly in that price range.
And really: considering a crosscountry when only driving a mile on gravel is just a totally exaturated scenario.
The volvo cross country is purely a cosmetical option.
When in need of offroad capabilities the Subaru totally shreds this puppy.
I think that Sensus sucks. The driver is forced to take his/her eyes off the road way too much with too many controls in the computer screen -- and also have to take eyes off the road to change drive mode (stupid design).
Wrong! There’s a T6 engine/model in Canada for the V60 with AWD. The CC only has T5 AWD. Remember your in Canada.

comprehensive review as always
sydjaguar Better review than most, with a lot of detail included.
Wagon lover here. Over the years I've owned several Scandinavian versions (Saabs and Volvos) and I've loved them all. I'll admit, though, that in my experience they generally require more care and demonstrate more niggly little issues than Asian brands. No matter. Loved 'em anyway. To those unfamiliar with Volvos their models' nomenclature is confusing. My neighbor owns a V90 Cross Country which he repeatedly notes is not an XC90 but unless they're sitting next to one another, it may be difficult to distinguish them from one another. If I were to choose I'd lean toward the V60 Cross Country simply because I prefer a smaller vehicle even if it means giving up some interior space.
Unfortunately, my wife's daily driver doubles as the family's trip vehicle and like many Americans (especially females) she finds the "command" seating position of an SUV appealing. As a result we gave up our last Saab wagon in 2012 for a KIA Sorento and re-upped with another Sorento last year. I compensate when I want to go canyon carving in the Cascade mountains with my GTI.
Yeah, wife doesn't like the car-like passenger seat of our Regal TourX until she drove it!
@@normt5463 My wife's preference isn't based on the passenger seat. It's the elevated position of the driver's seat she prefers. It's more or less a defense mechanism based on the experience of being surrounded in traffic by humungous SUV's with roofs 6-7 feet above the pavement. Of course, it's like an arms race. As vehicles get taller the responding in kind only makes matters worse.
@@normt5463 I doubt that the Buick's seats are nearly as supportive and comfortable. For people like me with back trouble, it's important to have good seats with extra controls for more options in how the seat sits and for lumbar support...

Alex, Please do a review on the all new 2020 Mazda CX-30 when you get the chance. I'd like to know what engine choices we'll get in North America.
Alex - Do you know what the V60 T8 Polstar MPG rating is?
Usually like your videos Alex for your details and thoroughness, but maybe you haven’t checked the Audi website lately, or maybe you won’t get it down there, but Audi is bringing the A6 Allroad to Canada at least later this year, not to mention the recently announced RS6, supposedly coming over here as well.
but A6 Allroad is more competitor to V90CC?
So Alex you don't think Buicks Tour x is a direct competitor???
Tour X can be. Depends on how much emphasis you place on ground clearance. My Saab 9-3 is higher off the ground than the Tour X, the V60XC at 8.7 is far higher and more capable. The Buick will also be far cheaper especially with incentives and generally not be as nice/well equipped.
@@FantomLightning I own one I think it's very luxurious. Having more ground clearance is only helpful in off road conditions. Buick is more car like than Subaru's outback. But has the same hp at 250 with turbo as the Volvo. I think they are direct competitors to each other
@@Shadseaweed I wouldn't disagree that they are nice. But again, the Volvo is going to cost more and be more premium as a result. If you watch into the video Alex states he didn't consider the current A4 Allroad to be a competitor because it didn't really sit all that high, the Tour X would logically fit into the same category.
@@Shadseaweed we own a 2018 Regal TourX also and think it is very quiet and nice riding.
@@normt5463 What are its negatives?
I think the Buick Regal Tour X is very similar to this Volvo at a MUCH lower price. All the Buick lacks is ground clearance. I own a 2018 Tour X and love it. The cargo area is WAY larger than the V60. The styling of the Tour X is VERY handsome.
Our Regal TourX rivals our 3-row SUV in floor space too! Just have to remember you have a big booty back there when making lane changes.
It lacks the structural integrity of the Volvo... Buick doesn't make their body frames and undersides as well, and Volvos are well-known for better overall body structure in case of accidents.
Very good reviewer. He knows what he's talking about and does his homework. But, he pronounces Toyota as Toda. Toy-o-ta
you are kinda wrong in the cargo capacity. the v60 only looses just over 2% cargo capacity with the seats up. the load floor is shorter than the v90 but the steeper rear glass pretty much entirely makes up for it.
Alex, how does it compare with 2020 Subaru Outback?
Excellent! lol
Nice review, nice scenery. A vehicle that is designed and capable of off-road travel on gravel, dirt, lumpy, snowy conditions should not use low profile tires.Volvo has engineered an excellent vehicle and then seriously degrades its purpose by using the wrong wheels and tires. We have been in this silly "Big Wheels" phase too long. Once again style over function. I expect many buyers of the V60 CC will never drive it on bad roads, so I guess they will be happy with the wheels and tires. They might just as well get the regular V60. Good to see that Volvo continues to offer wagons. Wonder if the folks that can easily afford a Volvo will just follow the crowd and get the luxury SUV or CUV. It takes some courage and individualism to choose a wagon over the larger vehicles.
4:50 that bee tho.
Easily solved by smaller rims and bigger rubber
I understand the comparo to the Outback, but those are very different classes, as Alex mentions. It is 100% an Allroad competitor, not Outback. Get the Volvo for style, Audi for tech.

What about Buicks wagon would this not compete?
Speed isn't the biggest issue with the Sensus infotainment system -- it's the poor maps and the fact that too many important features are taken out of knobs. Even Volvo management has stated publicly that they know they can't do as good a job as Google can, and they are thus replacing Sensus OS with a new Google OS (and Google Maps default, which is way better) in 2020 (presumably for 2021 models, but I think Polestar 2 gets it also at the end of 2019). Car makers really need to go back to knobs for climate and audio. Volvo's current dashboard screen is poor also, and doesn't even offer the engine temperature. And the silly roller dial for drive modes should be put on the steering wheel. Too many practical faults here, but not faults that can't be changed.
Elsa D - oh LCD!
You cross referenced outback so much haha outback is definitely a better buy. Get sports tires on bigger rim, use stock wheel as winters. IMO Volvo lacks brand image to justify the extra spending, seems like you went cheap and couldn't afford c300/e400 4matic wagon. I don't know... so many choices but no ideal choice. Begs the question, are they really doing the market research and what drivers really want? 300hp+ rwd bias awd. Adjustable electro suspension with option to get height adjustable sus.
