You should never have to explain or apologise for selling a dress for any reason. They are your clothes and while I like the idea of reassuring people that selling is OK, remember that you too are entitled to privacy

    Lor: Yes, I have.

Lor: No, it's beautiful and I love it. But I need to prioritize things in my life and I need to buy a house for my Lolita wardrobe.

I had a friend that told me she couldn't wear purple and I was like "Impossible"! Then one day we went shopping together, she tried on a purple top and it looked so weird with her skin tone. I was totally mind blown at the idea that someone could not wear purple, but it is a real thing.

Skin undertones makes a big impact on how colors look on you, there are a lot of videos about that topic in the make up community. Avoid the "beauty guru"s, and stick to factual advice videos

Yup lavender tones do make me look greenish-orange if that's even possible, royal purple is fine but someone else can rock all those light purple pastels

She could try different shades of purple. There are purples closer to blue and ones closer to red, so it could just be a matter of finding the right hue. I can't wear (too much) bright cherry red because my hair looks a weird bronzy green color next to it, but it looks just find with slightly bluer shades of red like burgundy and maroon.

This is why people try the color test analysis in Korea or something. Like they find out which seasonal palettes best suit you and which ones to avoid!

I don't regret selling any of the dresses I've sold, but I wish I had asked more for them. I always thought that you needed to lower your price by half each time you tried to sell it. I ended up selling some AP and Haenuli dresses for the same price as Bodyline. I'm sure the purchasers were happy about the deals they got.
Yeah Texas is one of the last places where you can be close to a major city and your Rent isn't arm and a leg . Dispite having a full closet I'm still very basics only. I usually only have 3 blouses, 3 main pieces and 3 large accessories that I can mix and match.

My parents bought me two skirts from Bodyline in my early days and I loved them at the time and thinking back on them they're super cute, one was a pink cake print and the other was a blue Alice print and they both had bustle style backs. Anyway, I loved them to death for a long while but then I hit my "ew Bodyline" phase and wanted to save up for brand. Well a few years passed and I was talking to my mom about lolita and how I sold those skirts and she was really upset because she had bought them for me and regret hit me in the face like a baseball bat. I immediately took to the internet to try finding them to rebuy them and undo what my shitty teenage self did but alas, I haven't seen them since.

I understand how she feels, but you can't keep every gift forever. Clothing you don't want to wear being bogged down in your closet unworn isn't doing either of you any good. My mother went to Bttsb when she was in Japan and brought me back socks and a dress that I cherished and wore at the time but eventually decided weren't my style, and she understood that when I sold them. I have a giant toy elephant that I need to give away taking up lots of space in my apartment... I am nervous about what the friend who bought it for me years ago would say when I do (the literal elephant in the room), but it MUST be done. XDD
And buying them back won't really be the same. You can't guarantee it'll be the same one she got you and if not, what's the point? Just my opinion - I respect if you disagree. :)

    • @idiotoninternet
      @idiotoninternet 4 роки тому +17

I get feeling bad, but you don’t have to keep gifts forever. It’s something I feel bad, but style changes and you change too. I get in particular if you actually liked the skirts that would make it different. But you’re not bad for selling something that’s a gift, especially if it was a while after getting it

    RE: being overwhelmed by comments
Have you considered maybe getting a virtual assistant? I dunno if that would be affordable for you, but I used to do a job where I more or less delt with comments and emails for someone--I had certain scripts I would use for common questions, send a document every day with things she might need to actually respond to, forward emails with job offers that might actually be worthwhile, responded to Facebook messages, etc. It's totally reasonable to be overwhelmed by responding to comments and keeping track of stuff once you have a lot of followers!
If that wouldn't be cost effective, then another thing you could do with the specific issue you mentioned here is keep a document or folder where you either copy-paste comments or save screenshots of ideas you like and might want to use, where you include the name and place you saw it. I'd recommend something like Google Docs for that, since you can access it on both your phone and any computer you might be using. I can be really disorganized and forgetful, so I rely on lists I've saved in Google Docs or elsewhere A LOT!

The fact that some feel entitled to judge and get offended that you sell your own things is very sad. Whatever way you got rhe dress, when it's given to you it is then YOUR PROPERTY. Nobody is entitled to dictate what you do with your things. This idea of giving people shit for selling or doing whatever else with their own things as if it were public property or the person was obligated to keep it forever just because they didn't directly buy it is ridiculous.
Great video and it was interesting to hear all the reasons you have to sell items. It definitely helped me feel more comfortable with the idea I have of selling most of my lolita pieces later on because I'm switching primarily to ouji.

I have one skirt that kind of got ruined for me by a bad seller on Lace Market. They had marked it as S size, I had checked from the taobao site that it would fit me, aaaaand what arrives to me is size XL skirt.
I messaged the seller bit confused, they pretty much just lied to my face about the sizing- OF A SKIRT I WAS HOLDING IN MY HAND- , saying it was the smallest size available. It's NWOT so I don't want to alter it in case I would just be able to buy the right size eventually.
But now every time I look at the print, I'm reminded of that seller and their dodgy answers and how I probably should've pushed more to get at least a partial refund :(

Even if you had truly gotten the dress "for free" (which I think rarely happens), I don't see where the problem with selling it "for profit" would be*.
It's your dress, if you have more use for the money that it is worth, than the dress itself, selling it is the next logical step. Keeping a dress that has zero use to you seems irrational.
*outside of potential contract issues, of course, although I would be really weirded out if a company paid me with an object and demands me to keep it around for however many years.

I totally understand the different shades of color affecting your skin tone. For example, for me its yellow. I cannot wear pale yellow shades to save my life because they make me look washed out. However i can wear darker, brighter, and more mustardy toned yellows with no problems at all. It kind of sucks because when i was in high school and shopping for prom dresses, i tried on this gorgeous baby pale yellow dress and it just looked aweful on me, i remember being so upset about it too.

I used to be really passionately straight edge too. It is good to hear I am not the only one. I started drinking when I was 27, and I was the same way as you about stuff. Now I am the same as you, I don't smoke anything, but I also don't care. It is nice to hear from other people like me who also grew up in the early days of fandom.
I am really enjoying your videos. I wear lots of alternative fashion and prolifically cosplay, but I am not a Lolita, nor have I worn the fashion. I am huge a fan of the fashion, even though it is not something I personally am not into seeing on myself. I just love looking at it and learning about it. Thanks for posting and educating.

I have only one regret regarding a dress: i once owned the high waisted version in Ivory of the Vampire Requiem jsk by Alice and the Pirates. I loved it so, so much, it didn't really fit me well because i'm tall and chonky, but it was a gift from my ex in a period of my life in which i was very confused about myself, so it gained sentimental value really quickly. I made the error to say to that ex while we were still together that she could use it from time to time, since it didn't really fit me all that well and on the other end she could wear it just fine. And once we broke up, she stole it from me and i never saw it again. I don't really care for her anymore, but i still sometimes thinks of that jsk.

(I had convinced myself that AP was unattainable, and that it would never fit me. Weird how we talk ourselves out of our dreams.) Now I own sooo much AP. I guess you could say it was my gateway dress lol. It just didn't really fit my style and I'm not a huge fan of crosses. I love pastels, blouses with pussy cat bows, cardigans, gingham, plaid, lace, pearls, kitten heels and Keds©. Lol. 420blazeitbunny is the funniest story I've ever heard about a lolita dress, especially as currently a straight edge person lol

I sold my first two dresses in 2017 when I was jobless and couldn't justify delving any further in lolita: BtSSB's Ribbon JSK in pink from the 2012 winter lucky pack and Bodyline's Chocoberry JSK, (spoiler: i'm more into lolita now than i've ever been lol). Out of the 3 dresses I owned at the time, I'd only worn the Ribbon JSK once years prior to a convention. I thought I'd be okay letting go of it after convincing myself it wasn't really my style anyway even if I did get back into the fashion, and I was keeping another Baby dress I got for much cheaper as a consolation of sorts...fast forward to now, my wardrobe is slowly but surely growing again, I've worn what I have several times, and I'm sorely missing my first dress ;__; The worst part is that I have very little hope of finding it again since it's a really obscure dress, as I've only seen it for secondhand sale twice (once on Closet Child when I purchased it and once on LM in the black colorway). I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that it'll show up on the market again someday.

I sold my Sugary Carnival skirt last year because I just wasn't into skirts, and now I regret it SO much. I've just resigned myself to the fact I'm not going to own it again because the prices it goes for now is absolute insanity. I also have a Diamond Honey jsk I'm planning on selling because it's a really pale sax and it makes me look hella orange!

I just sold a dress I was really excited to receive, because it was red. I expected it to be red, I thought it was pretty. I hate the color red... Just in general. It does NOT spark joy.... I love the print, I loved the way the dress looked on me, but I couldn't be happy looking at it because of the colo rway I selected. I'd say that's the weirdest reason I've sold a dress.

I am a hoarder, I rarely sale my dresses, but I recently sold an IW one because I had to accept it doesn't fit me anymore and whenever I put it on, I would be so self conscious and I hated feeling that way. Also, I needed the money.

I live in Texas. You dreaming of coming to Texas is the same as me dreaming of going to Canada. My rent is ridiculous, but I’d rather get human rights than a bunch of land in a more rural area of Texas.

You shouldn't need to defend yourself on why you sold something own but also it was interesting to hear your reason why the dresses didn't work for you.

So I made a promise to myself that I’d only wear OPs. I have 5. Never worn them. I have just not been prioritizing buying accessories and such to go with them. I’m not ready to give up on OPs (I haven’t even really tried). Any advice??

    • @Slithera
      @Slithera 4 роки тому

Do you know why you haven't worn your OPs yet? Is it because you have nothing to wear them with? It's a bit difficult to offer advice without knowing what exactly is the problem.
Either way, 5 OPs is plenty of dresses to start off your wardrobe, so I'd suggest focusing on getting accessories, shoes and a petticoat to wear with them so you can at least try wearing them (even if only indoors) and see if you like them.

I'm not into lolita fashion, I do dress alternatively tho, but not lolita, but omg after seeing the toy fantasy print I found it so funny how it looked like he was smoking a blunt, and then I checked the dress and I found the blue op one and found it so gorgeous, I just really feel the need to have it now. But that raises one question, is it offensive or bad for me, who doesn't wear lolita at all, to own and wear a lolita dress, despite not being in the community and possibly not even wearing it in a lolita co-ord situation? Cause I think it would look really cute juxtaposed with black combat boots and fishnets casually. Help!
