      nesc505 Few were truly ugly. But you should take a look elsewhere in the world so you can appreciate your neighbourhood more. They are different and unique, in fact quite amazing. They may not be beautiful, but that does not make them ugly.
      However, I am saying that after the pictures in the video which hardly justify some buildings, for better or worse. Some pictures even left out large portion of the building.

  • @brumplum

    I agree with many of the other comments, I think most of these buildings are absolutely stunning. I had a micro-debate with myself at the start about whether you'd include the Selfridges building in my home town and yay, there it is (#15). It has divided opinions locally, but nowhere nearly as closely as you suggest. Most people love it, and it's a major talking point for visitors (it's in a very obvious spot). My own view is that the inside doesn't come close to the promise of the outside but that's a different matter... (BTW it's a single department store, part of a huge development.

      The Old age of Architecture was the age of beauty.

    • @JosipMiller
      @JosipMiller 5 років тому

      Definition of beauty is changed from harmony, symmetry and things generally pleasant to human senses into "different" and "original", whatever it implies in different situation. This is how music moved from Bach over Shoenberg to today's music and how other fine arts move from Rafael and Vermeer to pile of sponges by "some dude".

    I liked all the buildings in this video. At least their designers were trying something new and were showing creativity. The ugliest buildings I've seen are these large warehouses that have started to pop up around the industrial area in my city. They're just large, 30 foot slabs of concrete with an occasional window here and there.

    They say that "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Some of the buildings that you list when constructed were considered quite innovative for the time. If you're looking for ugly buildings look no further than Big Box Stores or McMansions building "big" just for the sake of being big is a terrible idea. The Selfridges Building was completed in 2003 at a cost of 60 million British pounds and was designed by the architecture firm Future Systems. It has a steel framework with sprayed concrete facade. Since its construction, the building has become an iconic architectural landmark and was seen as a major contribution to the regeneration of Birmingham's downtown. Although Selfridges was physically integrated with the Bullring Shopping Centre the client wanted a distinctive building that would standout from the surrounding buildings. Selfridges has become an instantly recognizable signpost for the store's identity. The building's facade is curved, which wraps around the corner of Moor Street and Park Street. The facade comprises 15,000 anodized aluminum discs mounted on a blue background. The Portland Building was designed by Michael Graves and is considered the first Postmodern building to be constructed opening before Philip Johnson's iconic AT&T Building (Sony) in New York. When the building opened in 1982 the building was considered to be architecturally groundbreaking at the time and the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. Brutalism is a stye of architecture that you either like of don't like there is no middle ground. One of the problems with many Brutalistic buildings today is they are not maintained as they should be.

    You know, in 1889, the Eifel Tower was considered to be ugly. One Parisian famously said "I'll go there, because it's the only place in Paris where I don't have to look at it." When the Parthenon was completed, many Athenians hated it--they thought it was an eyesore. Plato didn't like it at all.

    The basket building is really cool. I miss those kinds of buildings. Hollywood used to be full of them, and so did southern california. I wish people would go back to designing really cool, iconic buildings, instead of all the square blocky junk you find in cities these days.

    A couple of those buildings look like LEGOs. And you should do a video on weird constructions. Include the water tower in Ypsilanti, MI. Very reminiscent of a ...well, you know. And when there is a dusting of snow on the roof...! Wow.

    It isn't technically wrong to refer to Devon as southern England but that term is usually used to describe the south east and mid south of the country. Devon is usually referred to as being in the south west or westcountry

    Wow, some of these building are awful. I would like to add Scottish Paraliment building in Holyrood, Edinburgh. It is not nearly as ugly as the top 10 but should really have made it into the teens in this list.
