  • Pilot episode of short lived game show starring Bill Cosby and Robbi Chong was an update of the classic series with Groucho Marx. Presented for historical reference.
    From Wikipedia:
The version hosted by Bill Cosby aired from September 7, 1992 to June 4, 1993 (with repeats airing until September 3 of that year) in syndication. Carsey-Werner syndicated the series, the first show they distributed themselves. Cosby was joined on this show by a female announcer and sidekick, Robbi Chong, who was referred to as "Renfield". Organist Shirley Scott contributed the jazzy theme music, and the program was taped in Philadelphia, at the studios of PBS affiliate WHYY-TV (where among others, the Nickelodeon game show Double Dare was taped).
Three couples competed, with each couple playing the game individually. After the couple was introduced, they spent time talking with Cosby. When the interview was done, the game began. Each couple was staked with $750 and were then asked three questions within a category presented at the start of the game. Before each question, the couple made a wager, which would be added to their winnings if they were correct or subtracted if they were incorrect. The secret word in this version, worth $500, was delivered by a stuffed toy black goose dressed in a sweatshirt from Temple University, Cosby's alma mater; if one couple said it, a new word would be chosen when the next couple was introduced.
The couple with the most money (independent of any secret word bonuses) advanced to the bonus round, in which they were asked one last question in any given subject. A correct answer won a choice of three envelopes, which were all attached to the goose. Two of the envelopes displayed the goose's face and would double the couple's money, while the third awarded an additional $10,000.
As the 1992/93 season progressed, many stations carrying the show either moved it to overnight time slots or dropped it entirely due to low ratings. Although the series was canceled at the end of the season, Cosby won a Kid's Choice Award for his hosting.

In 1992, another version of You Bet Your Life, this time hosted by Bill Cosby aired from September 7, 1992, to June 4, 1993 (with repeats airing until September 3 of that year), in syndication on local stations. Carsey-Werner syndicated the series, the first show they distributed themselves. Cosby was joined on this show by a female announcer and sidekick, Robbi Chong, who was referred to as "Renfield". Organist Shirley Scott contributed the jazzy theme music, and the program was taped in Philadelphia at the studios of public television station WHYY-TV (the former taping site of Nickelodeon's Double Dare and Finders Keepers). This was Bill Cosby's remake of the 1950-1961 game show of the same title hosted by Groucho Marx.
Three couples competed, with each couple playing the game individually. After the couple was introduced, they spent time talking with Cosby. When the interview was done, the game began. In 1993, an episode of In Living Color from season 4 had a skit called "You Bet Your Career". Jamie Foxx plays Bill Cosby, and it features washed-up celebrities competing for a walk-on role in sitcoms.
As the 1992/93 season progressed, many stations carrying the show either moved it to overnight time slots or dropped it entirely due to low ratings. The Cosby version was cancelled after only 1 partial season.
The Carsey-Werner Company owns the Cosby version, as it produced that revival with Cosby. The short-lived version of You Bet Your Life aired in early fall 1992, while The Cosby Show was still at its height of popularity during the same time.

I seem to recall watching Your Bet Your Life, the Bill Cosby version, used to come on WCIV 4 (an NBC (now ABC) affiliate) in South Carolina around 1993, during the early 90's.

Cosby gave this the old college try, but it's an impossible task trying to match Groucho Marx, and I doubt anyone will EVER be able to top Groucho!

Groucho Marx's You bet your life show was the best. Others try to duplicate his show but they would never be as good as Groucho.

Nobody from #PhillyPa. could be on the show, many of us auditioned, but, he only had one Temple Usher on the show, how can you have a show in a town, and, no one in the town can be on it!?!, what a slap in the face to Philly natives, who, supported his career by, populating his comedy shows & his movies, #TheShowWasDoomed!

@@Wheeloffortunefan999 No, he was just *bias*, I guess, I don't think he cared for ' a lot' of folks, from, #Philly, however, he wasn't opposed? to accepting their 'support, for, his career., imo, when, the break came between tappings(3 shows were taped) comedian Lewis Dix was the MC, and, a woman told BC she made a hat for him, first he didn't take it from her, he wouldn't touch the bag, but, he told Lewis to get it, and, Lewis didn't understand him not taking the bag from her, BC then replied to him, "we home now(?), he told him to reach in the bag, and, he pulled out a hat/cap, only the cap was 'studded w/silver studs, BC further went on to tell her, "i don't like all those things on it, if, you take them off, then, I will accept the hat, really Bill, how she suppose to get it to you??, imo-he could've took the hat, even, if he never wore it, she was a fan, that was the last time, I supported anything he did, clearly, he had a wall up, to separate him from, his fans, certain people, imo, anyhow, #StaySafeMaskUp, in this, #RealViralworld2020, #Peaceanloveall.

It was good to see an old show, albeit it didn't last very long. I saw the man I've watched since 1965 as a child. It hurts to see the legacy fall.... It intrigues me that the blame is pointed when he's blind & an Octogenarian. I will always wonder about the destruction of a famed Black male's celebrity status, & who's really behind it all...
    Thank you for sharing...💕💕

It went up against Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy quite frequently, and couldn't get much of their audience. Cosby Show reruns got higher ratings than this did, This was the 1992-93 season, right after Cosby Show ended its NBC run.

I used to watch this when it originally ran. Cosby gave it the old college try, but who could ever top Groucho Marx? As for his legacy... Yikes! His accusers came forward, and were believed in court. Assuming they weren't all a bunch of liars, the only one responsible for his downfall was Cosby himself. Let's be honest, a man like Bill Cosby could get women all day long. Drugging them to have his way with them points to some sort of problem that had nothing to do with attracting women in the first place. Just an awful situation... Awful!

@@williamanthony9090 beyond the accusations, this is why You Bet Your life keeps failing every time they revive it. It doesn't work without Groucho. Richard Dawson couldn't get past the pilot stage, Buddy couldn't Hackett (bada boom..) and Jay Leno's current version is awful (although he did get renewed for another season somehow....) I hear the main reason that got Bill was because Groucho himself once suggested he'd be good at it.
That being said, I think in the 70s Nipsey Russell could have done well with it and if he wasn't already working too much I'd say Steve Harvey would be great at it today.

Of course Cosby knows champagne is not a liqueur, he’s an expert at giving people drinks.
