I am a retired biomedical research scientist and I’ve been watching Dr. Pääbo lectures on UA-cam for a decade. His lectures and career pushing our understanding of the evolution of Neanderthal and other archaic humans has been awesome! His team’s work to understand the evolutionary significance of these trait introgressions from these related groups into modern humans is fascinating. The methods they are using to understand the differences between modern humans and our archaic relatives are very innovative and cutting edge. His recent Nobel prize was well deserved!🎉
Yes, this was a very interesting presentation and well argued. However, much of "the undergraduate and post-graduate science" ignores the strong possibility that our human species was repeatedly upgraded and mixed with extra-terrestrial genomes/DNA. It is time to break-out of the self imposed limits, Neanderthals were upgraded and assimilated into new off-planet genomes from neighbouring solar systems. The "missing link" idea has not yet be solved!

My first year of university in 1970 I took a biology. Canadian Dr. David Suzuki was a guest lecturer and his topic was something called ' genetics ' . This was completely new to me and I suppose to most first year students , and was , generally , Greek to us. It is a measure of the advances in science and the work of many people that Dr. Paabo's lecture would have been utterly impossible then . From reading his book and listening to such of his lectures that pop up , he and his co-workers are firmly in my science pantheon. Amazing tenacity , technique and analysis but particularly that greatest attribute of a scientist , an endless curiosity .
Fascinating presentation! Very excited to have stumbled across this video, via UA-cam's algorithm of my previous viewing of videos concerning human evolution. I love the clarity of Prof. Paabo as he works his way through meticulously well-organized slides. Now I know to keep an eye out for updates from him about the research he is involved with together with others. Thank you University of Lodz!
For anyone reading this post I'm currently researching Neandertal ancestry in sub-Saharan populations, and attempting to determine if all indigenous sub-Saharans have Neandertal genes. If anyone can assist in clarifying this topic, or suggest academic papers/online resources I would be much appreciative. Thank you.
@scarletgoat173 Definitely aware of the 0.3% in sub-Saharans, but the Princeton study proposing that percentage admitted their sample size was not generalizable to all indigenous sub-Saharans. This raises a question whether certain sub-Saharan populations may lack Neanderthal variants, which was the central question of my initial comment. Have you read the Princeton paper? I think only five populations were sampled and only a few were sub-Saharan...
Africans do not have Neanderthal genetic markers . They are solely Homo Sapiens humans which followed a separate evolutionary track than the Neandethal. Homo Sapiens and Neanderthals share no DNA with this hominid other than interbreeding with it in Europe and Asia. I am fascinated with what this means for modern humanity. Many of these ancient dynamics appear to be playing themselves out in the modern world. It's actually frightening if you understand the deep dive of the dynamics of these separate species
I look forward to continued research into how this covid risk factor works. I always heard that overall Neanderthal DNA boosted our immunity, yet that didn't make much sense since they went extinct & we didn't. As a medical professional, this is of fascinating interest.
I would have thought Neandertals felt less pain than us as one finds that most Neandertal skeletons have broken bones that have healed. That would sugest that they continued whatever activities, like hunting, even with broken bones. If that was possible they must have felt less pain subjectively!
I think the assimilation would largely have been of the females, the males would have been killed. That is the norm of modern human societies even into historical times. From papua new guinea, through vikings and back to the expansion of yamnya culture into islands off nortern Scotland.
Modern humans exist today... All humans, including those called modern were not... archaic to modern form took time and contributions from humanity of the past to present.
In order to survive through the ages, a genetic mutation must bring some benefits. Mutations that have come to us via Neanderthal humans must have definitely passed that test. So, I reflected on this pain threshold mutation. I think Svante Paeaebo made the mistake we all make: pain is a pure negative. It is not. It's a warning system, a sixth sense made of all other senses added. Neanderthal Humans were living in a pretty hostile environment. It must have been massively useful to them to have very early warning systems, because when we feel pain, we immediately set about alleviating it, which is potentially life saving. There are homo sapiens humans whose mutation is to feel no pain when homozygotic. When they are kids, they have to be watched to an insane level, else they get into potentially lethal accidents. Their life expectancy is lower than that of other people. When heterozygotic, however, there definitely is an advantage, as we sometimes need to push through the pain, or to galvanise others because you can ignore your own pain.
It is well reported through history that african women go through childbirth with little pain and recover within hours often working later on the same day while all other human women take weeks. It's also been said that african do not feel pain as much as other primates like Europeans. Since they do not have Neantherthal genes they would be interesting subject of studies but there is an unhealthy political interdiction to even mention this which is putting the brakes on a lot of high reward possible experiments for science.
Would be interesting to see how European science community can go on with the research after discriminating sanctioned Russian science. Russophobia is self-destructive in all means.
Russophobia is mostly politically heated, true scientists are above politics due to deep understanding of processes but choose not to interfere and continue work in their field. Though I’m pretty sure every scientist thinks now more about the direction our world is heading to.
OH! You beautiful idiot! Why would you be surprised that the differentiator was something so basic? It's always the basics that make the biggest difference. Love everything you do, man. I'm not a fan of many other primates, but you seriously rock, bro.
There is a big ethical dark cloud on this occupation : you do not kill and torture living beings for the sake of research, especially all mammals have a right to live the life that they were born to live and not become subject of biochemistry horrible torture.
The biggest setbacks in this field of research are not technological limitations but politically imposed false truths and interdiction to research some paths. 15 years ago neanderthal were primitive "brutes" looked down upon, now 40%-60% of their genes is us (quoted from this nobel prize) ! What a change on how neantherdal has been treated now they're like our endearing distant cousin. 15 years ago two different hominid species were defined as unable to have offsprings together. Now that changed into a continuous transition were the more remote the less the chance of survival of the offspring. This means that we recognized today that being able to breed with childbirth does not mean exactly same specie. A lot of the politically correct lies are still holding together a fantasy idea about a homogenous unique 'modern man' living today. When the truth comes i will not be surprised to learn that we live along with much more primitive hominins. Remember that 15 years ago it was falsely believed that homo sapiens was us and that homo neanderthal had nothing to do with our genes. How wrong , and i guarantee a lot of the politically correct lies is wrong today especially that relates to the already existing difference between hominins that lived in africa and would migrate and were already differentiated from those who would stay in africa.
Africans are not Neanderthal at all. They are pure Homo Sapiens Humsn. The Neanderthal is not human, they have NO human Homo Sapiens DNA in their genome like some other evolutionary hominids like Homo Erectus etc. Neanderthals are a separate species with a lesser brain function than humans as he and other scientists have detailed with the mice brain function experiment. Neanderthals had a separate evolutionary path completely their nasal structure revealed this.. Neanderthals were also a violent and irrational species. Caves of their cannibalized children old people and women with skull fractures and bone scrapping marks showed this trait. Ive read his research. I've also seen his lectures from a few years ago. He explicitly detailed their culture their jealousy of Homo Sapiens, smashed poorly mimicked Homo Sapiens technology, found littered in their caves from their frustratiion of not being able to master the technology.. The premature baby gene is only one of many disadvantages of the Neanderthal compared to Homo Sapiens. The low fertility rate among Europeans is not being discussed here but is detailed in some of this research. Europeans share 40% of their genome with this species. The warlike culture of the Neanderthal seems to be a possible a carry over from this species. It needs to be studied further. Out of Africa is being clarified. Africans are human and others are a hybrid humans species with some having less Homo Sapiens humans genes than others. The implications of this are frightening when you see the warlike tendencies of the ones leading the charge to nuclear war and promoting conflicts all over the earth 😳😱this needs to be figured out without ego or fragility to save our planet and humanity itself
@@lf1496 Homo sapiens is a human invention for the purpose of classification at various stage of human evolution. It has no reality in nature where evolution is a continuum medium. Africans are not Neanderthal indeed, Neanderthal was evolved and not primitive.
Species taxonomy is actually more to do with how much the genetics vary from one group to another. We are constantly finding new species at the moment, not because we didn't know these animals existed before, but because genetic analysis shows us they are genetically different enough to be classed as separate species.
