What if Rick did a “greatest new songs you’ve never heard of” series? I would watch it daily. What are the songs that really should be praised but aren’t? Who should be winning Grammys but isn’t? I love Rick’s perspective, and would like to hear him talk more in-depth about only a couple songs at a time on a regular basis.

To me, if a singer is a little off key, but I feel their passion - I’m all in! If the raw, human imperfections come through, in places where the focal point isn’t about perfection, but the human experience - then THAT makes it perfect! When / if those rare moments come around where the humanity, giving us the witness at the time, is damn near perfect, perfect in pitch, in phrasing, in dynamics in emotional expression without the sacrifice of professionalism, then we are all diminished - but just enough to recognize that something wonderful is happening and we ought to take heed! That’s just what I think… or feel. It’s all the same.
    Eva Cassidy comes to mind.

The funny thing is that the Grammy's USED to be the exact opposite of this. They would nominate songs that you never heard of that were complex and jazzy, but completely unlistenable. Now that there is so much music out there with an undeniable sameness, that's what's getting nominated.
The irony is that the Oscars are also shifting what gets nominated, but the nominations are more about the idea than the execution. "The Trial Of The Chicago 7" was in no way one of the best films of the year. But the Oscars felt that 2021 was a year to nominate a movie that glamorized uncouth radicals who wanted to overturn the democrat convention because they felt the voting process had been poisoned. All while decrying uncouth radical Republicans who... well... you get where I'm going.

We are definitely going through a weird period with pop music at the moment - folks will look back at the auto-tune period as an aberration of sorts. Apparently, to be different from the past, many artists seem to have thrown the baby out with the bath water and abandoned many critical songwriting elements. Also, as Rick points out, there are multiple writers on many of today's 'hits', which is quite nuts. Imagine this happened in the art world and not one but 10 or 12 artists each pitched in on a piece. Quite risible :)

What I miss about pop and rock of the 1960s-1990s is that the great songs of those eras had a hook, something unique and original that grabbed you right away and lived rent-free in your head for an entire month. The part of the song that instantly energizes an arena full of fans halfway into the set. Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits *nailed* it with the Money for Nothing riff. The iconic intro to Tom Sawyer by Rush... practically every song from Creedence Clearwater Revival's first four albums... Giorgio Moroder's synth lines pulsating beneath Donna Summer's sensual voice... there are probably some people in this comments section that knew the lyrics to "Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks... all the way to the late 1990s a lot of us probably knew the Wu's Triumph by heart "I bomb atomically, Socrates, philosophies and hypotheses, can't define how I be droppin' these, mockeries..." There's tons of examples. Even Pantera, at their heaviest, they still retained the catchy, groovy riffs that made Cowboys From Hell such a great metal album. One rock album from 1978 that i listened to for the first time while i was on a road trip actually made me have to pull over on the side of the highway so i could concentrate on the music. I haven't heard anything in the past decade that could make me react like that, unless it's to turn the radio off. I'm probably just old, but it feels like musicians collectively got addicted to xanax and the energy music used to have has just vanished completely. Today's music lacks the feeling and excitement of older music, in my opinion. Rant over.

I was just talking to my sister about this. How there is no feeling in a lot of popular music today. Take for instance anger, there are plenty of things in society to be angry about, but there is no one writing angry, visceral music, about it. Maybe bands like IDLES, but it's not the most popular stuff. People can knock on bands like Limp Bizkit or Korn, but at least they explored a real visceral feeling of anger. The problem today is that popular artists are only interested in creating a VIBE and not being polarizing. So their music sounds bland and tame. Say what you will about Bruno Mars, but even his pastiche of Earth, Wind, and Fire, felt more inspired than much of the music out there. But that's only because most everything else is insipid and uninspired. If you really listen to the album, it's kinda meh, as well. It's missing a certain "soul". I also think performers are more afraid and no one is really willing to put themselves out there like that, as it would require a level of vulnerability that many aren't down to expose artistically.

Then I watched the best 20 one hit wonders of the 80s one on a whim (being an 80s kid and prone to nostalgia), and it was immediately obvious that Rick just *loves music*. It really shines though. So I plucked up my courage and watched this one. I'm glad I did, because, again, the thing that really comes through here is a deep love of music. It says "rant" in the title, but it's not ranting at all. He's critical, but fair, and always looking out for things that are done well. One one of these Beato videos, the notion that Rock music is dying was proposed. That shocked me so much, I asked my family how they felt about that. They're not much into music, but my daughter came up with a novel idea: Today's music is like fast fashion. It's not supposed to last and be enduring--it's made to be enjoyed for a moment--worn once or twice and tossed. If it gets a meme or gimmick, it can last a bit longer, and if it's better than most, it'll be used in advertising in a few years. Otherwise, it's disposable--by design.
In our day, music, like fashion, was meant to last. It had to hold up to multiple listening (washings,) and work with our whole wardrobe. It had to be made well, and it had to keep our interest. My music, like my clothes, was made so well, I can pass it on to my kids, and they appreciate it.
This would explain why they need to increase the number of songs for the Grammys. It takes two or more of today's songs, to equal one of our generations songs. It's not fast fashion; it's fast music.

OK, Happier Than Ever by Billie is an incredible song. "Muddy" voice is a stylistic choice and it is intentional. Not every voice modification diminishes the quality of the song. I would record on the TV with the microphone holding the mic near the speaker ! I recorded many of his shows on the real to reel recorder. Then I would take that heavy recorder to my bedroom and play the recording stop and play stop and play until I learned how to play my classical guitar that my dad gave me when I was little ! There have been much worse Grammy awards songs in the past 20 years. But there are obscure bands and songwriters playing songs just as good in every major city in any Western country. I lump my sorry attempts in with the rest of the whole "out of ideas" mess over the last few decades.
There's 8 notes in an octave & 12 chords altogether (barring microtonal music, ofcourse)...but how much further can the ear go?
I agree THIS SONG was the better of them.

I find many current singers sound interchangeable - as if you could swap singers from line to line in a verse and not even notice. They all seem to have learned exactly the same set of vocal mannerisms, even before their voices have been processed through exactly the same tuning software.
I realise this has happened before. In the grunge era there were so many male singers who sounded exactly like Eddie Vedder, for instance. But this “vocal hive mind” thing is a lot more intense now.
I’d prefer to hear technically worse singers with real personality. Nick Cave is often out of tune, for instance, but it never bothers me. He just sounds like himself, and that’s enough.

It's easier to consider those singers as part of a lineage from Chapman/Chinn and Stock/Aitken/Waterman... Talented studio masters with largely replaceable singers and session musicians. Some of the artists passing through did have talent, like Rick Astley, but it was smothered in studio gloss.

    • @Bradley_Lute
      @Bradley_Lute 2 роки тому +7

1971 was jusy a year when authentic was cool. There is so much bad music made in 1971 as well, but the good music was charting. Same with 1994. 2004. The true test is how much music that isn't getting heavy rotation is good in a single year. Listen to All Songs Considered and they will find much of the interesting music that is also listenable to adults. Tons of great music coming out right now. Sure, the money isn't in it but still great music.

The best musicianship of stuff I liked mostly went off the charts into alternative, vocal/smooth/jazz and various metal sub genres.
