I really liked the B&W vlogging shot. The sound was pretty good, could hear the birds very well, in an organic way. To me that was a bigger plus than the negative of the wind howling occasionally. Very different style than th common vlogging, and I like it better - more character. Also, it was extremely well keeping the face skin tone when you turned around, despite the drastic lightning differences due to the changing position of the sun.
It's refreshing that there are still camera brands that go their own way like the X-PRO3 or Leica Monochrome cameras. I would have at most raised the depths in your pictures, but that is a matter of personal taste. The advantage of this camera is that you have no choice - everything is monochrome.
Excellent, informative video. I’ve watched many videos about this camera, and this was great. I am saving to purchase this camera as I’m addicted to black and white. Thanks!
Thanks John for the feedback and glad it could be useful to you! Am sure you’ll love this camera - especially if you are a black and white lover! Take care
Regarding the SOOC jpegs vs the DNG’s - I took a couple of hours and managed to get a tone curve that matches my DNGs very, very closely with the jpgs. It’s well worth the effort!! I did it with tone curve adjustment only + upping the exposure just a smidge
I am heavily thinking about adding a Q2 monochrome to my "kit" instead of a normal Q2. Normally shooting Fuji for weddings and private use. So the monochrome is sooooo special that i want it so badly
Great content Chris. Would you buy a Q2/3 over the SL2S with the 24-70 2.8 lens? I have a Sony FX3 for video, but have been interested in the SL2Sz thanks in advance. Travis
Hey there, I love the SL2s but... for different purposes to be honest. I think it is more of a "pro" camera (meaning, to work and make professional work that brings money in) rather than an "all around" camera which is what the Q2 is (imo). I have shot a bunch of commercial videos for Leica in the past (finished one for the M11 monochrom a couple of weeks ago) and used the SL2s (can't use a non-leica camera for such a mandate). I own the A7Siii for video and I will use it over any other camera (even the SL2s) and since the FX3 has the same sensor and specs... you know what I mean. It is a very personal opinion but I think Sony has the upper hand on low-light handling and AF (which I use for my YT channel a lot). Hope that helps
Excellent review Chris. I'm 64 and have got rid of all the heavy DSLR equipment. I want to keep walking the fells and hills in the UK but still have a camera that I know if I do my bit the images will be of real quality. I'm happy to say the Q2 was the right decision for me, but, ........that Q2M, mmmm you're a long time dead maybe I should have both??
Hello Gary, thanks for stopping by and i am glad you liked the video! Excellent on the Q2! That’s awesome. My viewpoint is that one doesn’t replace the other BUT both aren’t necessary (don’t get me wrong, if you can get them both I’d definitely say go for it!). I.e: if you have the Q2 I think you have everything you need and you can still shoot b&w. It won’t be the same b$w but comes close enough. That’s my 2 cents. Take care and happy shooting!
One day, just out of curiosity, I went to a leica store and tried out this camera. Well, as you said, the pictures that came out of it were so amazing that now I its my main camera to take everywere. just stunning pice of equipment.
Thanks for the review I found it detailed and helpful In my mind I have brain chatter” why not just use you colour and convert … who will notice “ other part of brain , I will notice and I want the q2 , mono, not because of some hidden skill but because I lust after it”
Thanks for the feedback Lee and glad it could be of some help. I hear you and I see what you mean - this is a VERY particular camera and yes, having it color and then turning it B&W ain't the same... :) take care!
That’s right - 64mp equivalent. You might want to play that part of the video again as I explain in detail why that is and how the lack of a color filter array produces such results. Cheers
I loving the Q2Mono SOOC JPEGs as well. 😊 So far, prefer jpeg contrast setting at “Medium High”. Are you using “Standard” or what are your jpeg settings? Thanks
Nice review, straight to the point and thorough. It's a gorgeous camera, though just a hair too expensive for me. Would love to take it out for a spin sometime!
The question of “is it worth it?” comes up in every review, particularly for Leica. The answer is always “it’s up to you.” Got it, folks? Markets work. They charge what they charge because enough people are willing shell out. Why is this even a question?
True. But the main reason is this: why should I pay 6k for a camera that only shoots b&w, has the same autonomy than a regular 100 bucks camera and has the same sensor than another way cheaper camera? That’s the reason for the question « is it worth the price?» for many people. It is for me, but not everyone knows that. Take care and thanks for your comment!
No doubt true, but even in this case the entire rest of the video is about WHY it’s worth it. By the time the price question comes up it’s already answered and the only thing to say is “it’s up to you.”

That's awesome Martin!
Great review, simply put. I've recently just changed my leica q2 colour for the q2 Monochrom. I now feel I've just joined a special club..
Thanks Chris! Haha I hear you! It is an amazing little camera and I really de in love with it 😊
I am heavily thinking about adding a Q2 monochrome to my "kit" instead of a normal Q2. Normally shooting Fuji for weddings and private use. So the monochrome is sooooo special that i want it so badly
I definitely hear you! 😄
I also shoot mainly on Fuji and the Q2 monochrom has got something really cool to it. Take care

@@cris_photography totally understand, I’m going to pick up q3 when it comes out or q2 . Thanks for feedback, greatly appreciated
Sounds good! For the Q2… wait a little bit 😉 and stay tuned
Cheers mate

Don't ever go to test the Q2Mono. It'll be love on first sight. Thanks for the review.
Most definitely true! Thanks for the comment take care
I bought mine without even going to check it out... Left my Q2 at home.
The main strength of this camera is the patented H.Y.P.E. system. :)
😜
Thanks for the review
I found it detailed and helpful

did you just say 64 mp? I thought the monochrome only shot 46mp?
That’s right - 64mp equivalent. You might want to play that part of the video again as I explain in detail why that is and how the lack of a color filter array produces such results. Cheers
Thanks for this video! very informative!
Blogging with a Leica....
You’re very welcome 😉

Yes same here!!
Medium high like you! Love that setting best too 😌
