I'm so confused? This is based on the znammeny chant, which is the slavicized version of byzantine chant. Just natural changes which happened over long periods of time. Its quite beautiful and absolutely canonical.
There is a huge difference between Polyphonic and Mono tones. Going all the way up to the ceiling doesn't make much if difference Unless they are Western Style and Not Byzantine!

additionally, in many Russian churches the icon wall goes to the ceiling, these aren't theological differences, they are stylistic.
