      Well, for it to be considered a firearm, it has to have a "barrel." So an argument might be made that a railgun doesn't have a barrel, it has a parallel set of rails which do not meet the definition of a barrel.
      Assuming a "barrel" is a metallic tube typically used on firearms. And a "tube" is a cylinder used for transporting objects. And a cylinder =/= parallel rails.

      4:30 I can't explain it, it just feels like that rail design wouldn't work well. Is that wrong? Like the current could path through the rail in a way that could decrease the tangential force.....

      @@runningchild8052 the way that the rail is a semi-circle, my intuition tells me that the path electricity will take will be "the path of least resistance." So what i imagine is that it is either going to jump across the tiny gap so you're only getting a pinch of that tang force. OR even going from that tiny gap and wrapping around the circle and back thus increasing the distance between the current direction changes.
      From what I can tell, the best shape would be the opposite of this. The rails being 2 parallel cyclinders and the projectile being a cut-out in between. Like a rounded I-Beam.

    One correction for you, the Navy has been working on railguns since at least the 70's. I worked on the Army's version back in the 80's.
    And here's a couple of tips for you.
    1. Purge the barrel with He just before the shot. The lighter gas offers less resistance and will increase velocity.
    2. Try a lighter projectile. Al can be accelerated to a higher speed due to less mass. It's that velocity squared component that does the real damage.
    3. Cut a vertical slot into the back end of the projectile. The current through the projectile will force the tabs apart and give better contact with the rails and less rail ablation.
    4. Make an inductor from heavy wire to spread the pulse out. You should be able to optimize the pulse width to the time that the projectile will be in the barrel.5
    5. Increase the pressure of the injector. But you already know that.

      @hugojmaia 2 роки тому +14

      @@andrefilipe6757 The linear motor is literally 2 straight wires and a bar connecting them, the direction of the current determines where the bar goes, the value of the current determines how fast the bar accelerates. In a rail gun the wires are the 2 copper channels and the bar is the projectile.
      A coilgun is something the people in this channel also made, it is a series of coils wrapped around a tube where you have to time the activation and deactivation of the magnetic field generated by the coils in order to accelerate a ferrous projectile. Doesn't require as high a voltage, but the circuitry is more complicated with a lot of fine tuning required.

    16 35F capacitors... you guys are insane.
    By the way, for anyone who would possibly think doing this at home could possibly be a good idea, normal capacitors (~10uF, about a million times less powerful than this) can explode like firecrackers if misused. You can imagine what one of these would do.

    • @SuperJhon360
      @SuperJhon360 6 років тому

      Michael Cullen depends on the type of capacitor your talking about foil capacitors don't explode they just pop and catch fire and plate capacitors don't either they are just a piece of plastic with copper sheets on either side. They don't explode that's why they use them in high voltage projects like Tesla coils.

      Not to take away from the impressive size of this cap bank, but those definitely aren’t 35F caps. Probably 3500uF, which for 16 in parallel is still a whopping 56mF which is about 1000 times most electrolytics you would find in everyday electronics.

    Hey guys-- if you build a controller with optical interruptor and give it half the capacitors when it's fired and the other half once it passes about 25 percent of the barrel length, it'll shoot it faster.
    You will have to have a pretty good fast high-current switch, but you can use an SCR. What happens otherwise is that you run out of current before the projectile leaves the barrel.
