Marilu Schmier no worries. please explore other tutorial as well. I'm glad to say that my shabby ones have been replaced by superior ones. at least some have.
I don't see this on any of the top or recent comments, but proper airmanship on landing is power for altitude, pitch for airspeed. What this means is if you need to gain or lose altitude, you add power, which generates more lift, or cut power, which makes your wings generate less lift. If you need to gain airspeed, you pitch down(less drag), and if you need to lose airspeed you pitch up(more drag). Use this procedure to walk your meatball onto the proper glide slope.
Yeah, tanit's short final was looking pretty good, but he didn't flare and came down like a meteor. He didn't deploy speedbrakes, and didn't do any aerobraking after touchdown either. That landing was pretty rough all in all, but it gets the basic point across. (The point being, 3° glideslope, 11-13° AOA, meatball on the runway threshold.)
Regarding the "3 degree nose down" questions. I think what he meant to say was -3 degree flight path. The bird looking symbol on the HUD is a flight path indicator. You should be in a nose high pitch attitude on landing but your flight path will actually be negative. i.e in this case "minus 3 degrees" following this particular glide path angle to the runway .
+Ryan P On another landing tutorial the guy stresses about using the AOA indexer, bottom left of HUD and the AOA bracket that appears when gear is down...so can i just ignore that, ensure fpm is aimed at the white markers on runway, then bring fpm up before touch down to -3 degrees...which is called the flare? and with speed at about 180-190?
Never seen a aircraft perform nose down landings. Talk about a ruff ride. Wonder how many ppl snapped their gear trying "3 degrees nose down" landings.
Nice tutorial, but the ideal landing speed isn't a specific knots value. Rather the flightpathmarker should be at the upper side of that vertical bracket. Then you fly with 11 degrees AOA. No matter what your weight or dragcoefficient is, you'll allways come down with a safe speed.
I was relatively new to flying when I made these tutorials, if you watch any of my flights I uploaded recently you'll see it's textbook now. If I ever get some free time i'll take this video and re-record it.
XLNT refresher, I've been searching for basic tute, because even tho' I could fly a realistic landing, I got tired of rolling off the runway... HOLD the wheelbrakes?!? Genius
Well what he did was a carrier landing, where you don't flair, but as far as I know the F-16's landing gear is not made at all to do landings like that! I don't know if he assumed he didn't had to flair because there's an angle of attack indicator, but there's one in the A-10 too but if you slam the A-10 on the runway like a F/A-18 you'll break the landing gear instantly.
@luigix I would recommend just following the pre-planned patterns I go off of in the first part of the video, if you follow it you don't have to guess where the ILS starts, it corresponds to the beacons. You could very well be too high, as I showed in the video the ILS starts at about 5000 feet and goes down to 2000 feet for terminal guidance. Just look at the navigation chart and follow it or or at least use it for clues.
@RapaFan You can download it online if you search around - the game has been out of production for years and the companies which published it are defunct.
OK, so actually you are supposed to put the runway threshold at 3 degrees down, not your nose? The original Falcon 4.0 manual has some good info on how to set the plane down. Apparently the correct approach speed is 160, and the plane has air brakes you are supposed to trigger before you flare, to drop to 130 before touchdown.
Hey, Tanit, it's my first time Watching your tutorials and I subscribed right away, you're awesome! I'm learning to do these navigations using the "Chart Tutorial.pdf" (Located at game folders), but I could't find anything teaching there or here about how to use\tune radio\comms. I see people talking in the internet about some radios presets and all, but that's a lot advanced for me yet. There's anyhow you do a Basic Radio Tutorial? I can't even turn the UHF on, it's always only backup mode lol.
@RapaFan first download a torrent of a CD image of the original Falcon 4.0 and burn it to a CD (you'll need the CD only for installation, not gameplay). Next go to the Falcon BMS (Benchmark Sims)site and download Falcon BMS 4 and the latest update BMS 4.32 (they're both free and insanely awesome). You're ready to play.
@MercuryOneOne yes I have windows 7 64 bit. There is one multiplayer server I know off the top of my head that has 10-15 guys on every night, Archer's server. There are various "virtual fighter squadrons" (the equivalent of clans) which also play the game in multiplayer. I am part of one called United Operations Air Forces, which you can see some gameplay of by checking out my other videos.
@tanit thanks alot! really helpful tutorials.. im coming from the DCS series, and this seems alot more complicated! :) weird that just few days ago i found out about BMS.. also another question. is it possible to bind modifier buttons like for exampe Shift + *random joystick button*? when i tried, i was just able to bind them to other keyboard inputs.
This video I understand.I don't understand the HSI or the landing procedure used when using it.Are you planning on making a HSI video?I don't understand how to use the HSI doing a proper landing procedure.
Tanit, I used to fly huge 747s in my simulator and recently got to bms 4.32.What i wnt to say is that the approach speed in a huge aircraft is approximately 165 knots and the landing speed arround 150 knots which means that your approach was too fast.Secondly right next to the runway there are 4 lights, the PAPI lights. In your approach you must have two reds and two whites the more white the higher you are while with the red is the opposit. You had 4 whites which means that you are way too high.
@tanit thanks for the quick reply! but i actually tried it with other airbases, not the same one in ur video. Given that i don't have an example to follow, do i have to guess where to go then? can't be right? Thanks again :)
Where do you find the exact headings for the runways at Korean airbases in this sim? I found a chart online but it only has the ILS frequencies, not the headings.
OUCH man XD Damn you land HARD! I don't know if it's because I flew the VRS F/A-18E on a carrier but damn, let's just say I'd expect more skills from my teacher xD Nice videos though, it shows everything I need to know.
Your tutorial is great! I have a few questions... Will Falcon 4 work on a Window7 64bit system? And how does the online mulitplayer feature work? I ask because I am interested in getting the game and playing multiplayer, but I don't know anyone else who has the game. Thanks again for the tutorial (AWESOME! Thumbs-Up) and any feebback on my questions.
If you have Android, there is a very useful app in Google Play store called BMS Electronic Flightbag, which has an interactive map and checklists. It's free, I really recommend it.
Great video! But sadly i still couldn't do it! I input the ils frequency and course, switched to ILS/NAV mode, and got in range. However i'd end up trying to chase down the Command Steering Cue, by then i might already be over the runway. On some occasions, the Command Steering Cue circle symbol actually has something sticking out of it, what does that mean? So what exactly am i doing wrong? am i too high or too low? or is it another problem entirely?? Thanks for reading!
@tanit Hi tanit - I'm just adding to this one because I'm having the same problem - having tried what's said here I went to look for the command and having checked thoroughly 7 times, I can conclude that there is no assignment for NWS in my F4BMS - as though the command is not iplemented at all..? Any help would be dearly appreciated - thanks for uploading these too...I'm still trying to follow them to actually use weapons though :-P
Hi, so for me the Shift+/ is mapped in the settings as Wpn-Hardpoint Missile Cycle and I was wondering whats Nose Wheel Steering named as in the settings because Shift+/ for me is Wpn-Hardpoint Missile Cycle. Thanks :D
Hi Krause, I seem to be having a problem getting ILS to work in the air if I've done a ramp start on the ground, suggesting to me I've maybe left a switch out. Anyway when I push 1 on the ICP, my DED scratchpad TCN as ON, ILS as ON. Instead of showing CHAN and BAND it says backup, and it doesn't allow me to input any information into the DED in order to set ILS up. A screenshot is available here: puu.sh/9r1hD/e74b4fb199.jpg Is there some switch I have to turn on in the pit, or some information I need to put in beforehand? It should be noted that when I opt to just takeoff instead of cold start the plane it works fine, so pretty sure it's my own incompetence. Thanks for any responses in advance.
lb8068 Your image is no longer up, but the "backup" indication suggests that the TACAN/ILS data entry is being controlled from the AUX COMM (or AUX NAV) panel on the left rear side of the cockpit. There should be a switch there to pass that control back to the ICP.
I think he fails to flair right before touchdown. I've always heard that you should pull up slightly so that your VVC (velocity vector cue, or flight path indicator) points at the end of the runway a split second before your wheels make contact.
I understand this but HSI I can't get around lol. Cmon Krause help us all to learn the HSI instrument because there is nothing out there that explains it.
Hey, there's a tutorial at your BSM files, (...\Docs\Airport Approach & Navigation Charts\Chart Tutorial.pdf) Teach me a lot already, you should try it. (And yeah, I know this comment has 1 year xD)
+Dean Thompson you're not supposed to flare an F-16... its a good way to end up with a tail strike. you should drive it straight to touchdown. if you have correct speed and glide path, you should stick the landing.
Dude..... LoL. That was the worst landing ever. Next time, get your airspeed and altitude ready before final. Also, you want to put the FPM on the threshhold. Actually, there were many things wrong. But nice bounce.
Actually... you just need to land the plane without breaking it lol. My technique works according to my buddy who flies for the Marine Corps. Have a good one.
If you were playing the original Falcon 4.0, you would have crashed. I remember being so frustrated with Falcon 4.0, then I watched the tutorial from the game and got it after a few tries.
I just downloaded BMS and I wanted to thank you for these tutorials!!! The time you spent is VERY helpful.
Nice work Krause. I'm a long time Falcon and Falcon AF player. Just stating out on BMS. Your tutorials are excellent. Thank you!
Marilu Schmier no worries. please explore other tutorial as well. I'm glad to say that my shabby ones have been replaced by superior ones. at least some have.

Thank you ,you did it so clear to understand ,I’m an old timer getting back to it, call sign (Palidan)!

Fair enough. And the effort you put in these tutorials is appreciated.

It is so cool to to all this schooling many thanks to all involved!
@Tracer2k shift-forward slash. Left of your shift key. If it doesnt' work look up ckpt- nose wheel steering in controls.

Will watch this now. Can't wait to start on the campaign soon. I just miss some more training missions and I am off :D

@luigix Yeah except there's charts for every airbase in south korea and most in north korea. Go check your BMS folder.

You should correct in the beggining of the video, the glideslope indicator is the horizontal beam, and the localizer is the vertical one...
Also you have to aero brake when landing. The nose should be up until the plane slows down.

Krause, love your videos man. is it possible if you can make just landing tutorial? Having issues with landing.
Please help, thanks.
Great tutorial. Thanks.
Very useful! It helps me a lot.
Thanks!
@dogboy182 Ah, understood - I'll try and play about to try and merge them or something - thanks for the heads-up and great vid :-D
@tanit thanks for the quick reply! but i actually tried it with other airbases, not the same one in ur video. Given that i don't have an example to follow, do i have to guess where to go then? can't be right?

Of course on touchdown you'll want to use the proper flare/AOA etc.
If you have Android, there is a very useful app in Google Play store called BMS Electronic Flightbag, which has an interactive map and checklists.
It's free, I really recommend it.
excellent tut helped me a lot do more
thankyou ... a better explained video
Great video! But sadly i still couldn't do it! I input the ils frequency and course, switched to ILS/NAV mode, and got in range. Thanks for reading!
When I click T-ILS, on DED it says ILS OFF. I select knob to ILS NAV. Do you know why?
What's the issue? What don't you understand?
Krause, Newbie Here Wen using target script do you run the .key file or te .tmH file?
Thank´s again !!!, nothing on TACAN?
No matter what i type into the DED for the tower freq, it flashes and does not get inputted. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?
@tanit Hi tanit - I'm just adding to this one because I'm having the same problem - having tried what's said here I went to look for the command and having checked thoroughly 7 times, I can conclude that there is no assignment for NWS in my F4BMS - as though the command is not iplemented at all..?

nose wheel steering isn't working for me.. by forward slash you mean the one above the num pad? also, i cant find it in the options.. so messy
205 mph is a slow landing speed?
I see HUD images of 16's landing at 150 knots
Hi, so for me the Shift+/ is mapped in the settings as Wpn-Hardpoint Missile Cycle and I was wondering whats Nose Wheel Steering named as in the settings because Shift+/ for me is Wpn-Hardpoint Missile Cycle. Thanks :D

I have the legs mod so i have a kneeboard and interactive map with all the TCN and ILS info in my CF-188's and F-18's and F-16's.
What about the marker lights in the pit, do they work?
Lets say you're messing with the ICP, how do you get back to enter ILS info into the DED?
Click on the "RTN" button which will take you to the "home screen."
What is the sound (alpache) means ?please
I mean 180 knots..that with full fuel load and stores?
What do I need to start playing? Original Falcon 4.0 which is many years old (can I buy it somhere?) and then install some addon? (is it free?)
No matter what I do, my ILS on the DED is marked "off"
So, the ILS will remain in standby "off" until you turn the knob labeled "ils" on the audio 2 console.
I think he fails to flair right before touchdown. I've always heard that you should pull up slightly so that your VVC (velocity vector cue, or flight path indicator) points at the end of the runway a split second before your wheels make contact.
And keep angle in attitude in green for flair!

Damn hard landings !!!
Where can you get Falcon 4 from..?
Steam
No landing flare ???
+Dean Thompson you're not supposed to flare an F-16... its a good way to end up with a tail strike. you should drive it straight to touchdown. if you have correct speed and glide path, you should stick the landing.
***** i guess i stand corrected.
Nah, Just Navy style ;)
check hte top comment... it is an old video!
Dude..... LoL. That was the worst landing ever. Next time, get your airspeed and altitude ready before final. Also, you want to put the FPM on the threshhold. Actually, there were many things wrong. But nice bounce.
Dude. Then why don't you make videos? This community is so small and there are few resources out there for new people. At least this guy is trying
Actually the FPM should be on the steering cue but it should also be between the [ on the hud to keep the AOA correct.
Actually... you just need to land the plane without breaking it lol. My technique works according to my buddy who flies for the Marine Corps. Have a good one.
Who cares, BMS landing gear are indestructible anyways. Never once broke anything no matter how hard I put her down.
If you were playing the original Falcon 4.0, you would have crashed. I remember being so frustrated with Falcon 4.0, then I watched the tutorial from the game and got it after a few tries.
He needs more IQ
When I switch my HSD to Nav/ILS its does not turn on...........What could i possibly doing wrong?
+flukeykilla0812 I meant HSI not HSD....
+flukeykilla0812 NVM. You forgot to mention some sort of master knob for the ILS next to the throttle just under the comms knobs.
