- Check out the inventive staging and vocal musicianship as the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles thrills audiences with this Gilbert & Sullivan gender-bender. Then make a date to see the chorus LIVE at the Alex Theatre. Choreographed by Mark Chung.
I keep coming back to this. It's terribly campy and funny. That fan wave is a clever finish.
What makes it hysterical is the musicianship. If they'd been falsetto, off-key and silly it would have been LESS fun. I love the GMCLA!
It doesn't matter how bad my day has been, I can watch this and it makes me smile......
Gilbert and Sullivan would have loved it!
I suspect Gilbert would have loved to stage this. He would often poke fun of his own work. This was priceless....... Thank you
One word: Fantastic! Loved how the chorus snapped their fans towards the end. This is a delightful clip. Gilbert and Sullivan forever! Thanks for sharing.
Ummm...wasn't expecting this at all! But I watched to the end and was utterly charmed.
I think Gilbert would have secretly loved this!
Just simply fab, thanks.
Love it when the whole chorus get out the fans!
This makes me so happy!
I've seen this before and it was great to see it again. Well done guys. Bravo~!
only in Los Angeles can something like this happen and nobody would think twice about it
Reminds me of Frasier! Brilliant performance.
I love it!!! Well done, it might set the standard for this aria. Just great fun! Wonderful choreography! Also, these are the most ravishing three little maids I have seen!.
Very funny, and well done. Campy too! Simply perfect!
@99sra Thanks very much. When 200 singers assemble in Hollywood, there are many collaborators! Give special credit to the dancer in the purple kimono. He choreographed this entire number, including the surprise with the fans at the end. Be sure to visit us if you come to LA. For tickets, see: gmcla.org
This was wonderful! Thanks so much, loved it!
FANTABULOUS!! I LOVED IT!!!!!
Thanks! As you can see, we love what we do, and in this entertainment capital, we're blessed with a remarkable talent pool. Yes, we performed a lengthy sequence from "Pirates of Penzance" in 1994, but the video just isn't up to this quality, so you'll have to catch us live in one of our many performances around southern California! Be sure to visit gmcla.org for details and tickets (and more videos!).
Gay men make life enjoyable!
LMAO 1:20 - 1:24 I WAS NOT expecting that! this was funny love it!
Bravo!!!
This is so brilliant it leaves me speechless! BRAVO!!

@wkyken
No, first tenor TK Asano wears the turquoise kimono, second tenor Gary Hayashi in pink, and Mark Chung is the baritone in purple who also choreographed the number for chorus and maids. Thanks for asking!
I LOVE this. The Mikado was my first "classical" music experience in 1st grade. Kudos, indeed!!
That was absolutely delightful! ^____^
That was awesome!
What a great presentation - perfect!
Shared on Facebook because my 10yr old would like to give it a million thumbs up and could only do one. Was looking to do this song for a talent show. Thank you uploading it on UA-cam.
Absolutely BRILLIANT! =D Had me in stitches!! x
I love my tribe.
I try not to freak out a lot, but this is just fabulous in every sense of the word...
Very well done. My choir did the mikado this year too.
Thank you from Cannes (south of FRANCE) Magnifique
I was just listening to a CD...Ultimate Gilbert & Sullivan...which contains TLM, and was thus inspired to see what might be out here. This is just a great take! Bravo!
this was great!
Two points to make; A) drag is always a crowd pleaser when played for laughs (which was done quite well here), B) it's almost fitting that men are playing women-despite being a very Savoy Opera written by a couple of British guys, it's traditional for men to play as women in kabuki theatre (as well as traditional Shakespearean theatre).
And exactly what difference does it make what their orientation is if they create great music and have fun? These are very talented people.
HAHA it suprised me this songs on Zack and Cody and Princess Diaries 2
i love thesee guys!
Loved it!!!
GENIUS WORK
That was amazing! Wow. I would say "fabulous" with a nasily voice, but that is more than fabulous!
I'm in love with this. OMG!!!!
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH
Brava!
Just wonderful.
Very nicely done. Would like to see these gals tackle 'climbing over rocky mountain' from Pirates!
I loved the little fan wave at the end the blue kimono is beautiful
Thanks! No, not part of a drag show, this clip is from "Diva's Revenge," a concert by the full Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles that incorporated opera arias and scenes in many languages. This wry comedy comes from Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Mikado." For more information about upcoming concerts by this talented chorus, visit: gmcla.org where you'll find more clips too!
I'm glad to find out I'm not the only one who sings this song down an octave X__x
I absolutely loved this! I can't stop watching these guys. I think they should do Madama Butterfly next.
Come to NYC! Please. They could definitely sell out Carnegie or Alice Tully Hall.
Love it! x
Absolutely FABLULOUS, boys! I just had the urge to pull out my own fan and sing along!
Keep it up, you guys are AMAZING!!
Love,
An adoring fan from NorCal :)

I love it. They are soo cute!!
AWESOME!!!
This is halarious!
LOVE IT !!!!
This is so much fun to watch, it always makes me laugh. This performance must have been a part of a larger program. Is it available anywhere?
Thanks for your kind comments. Yes, the performance was part of a full evening of opera choruses and operetta novelties, entitled "Divas Revenge." While all 200 GMCLA singers perform for free, the arrangers, composers, union musicians, and theater staff do not. DVDs are prohibitively expensive, as proceeds must pay everyone _except_ the choristers. Therefore, please enjoy our performances online only. Here's one more popular moment from the same show:

James Roman Thank you sir, for your response. I'll have to admit I'm enjoying all them very much. It makes me wish I could get to Los Angeles and see everyone live. Bravi! to everyone in your association.

I submit that no straight men's choir could do the wave better, nay, even half so well!
Wow, the "maids" have really got guts!

Jim, would it be OK to ask for IDs on the "three little maids"? I think the one in pink is the first tenor of the three, right?
hahahahahahaha! It's brilliant !
that was cute.
Omg that's was so funny
@Scarecrow2004 Funnily enough there would have been a time when straight men would have done this without being stigmatized but I don't think the world was any better then as it is now.
