Could Cape Town be our New Home? 🇿🇦 | African Americans living Abroad

- We've always loved South Africa and had dreams of making Cape Town our new home. Now we're back after 15 years, and it has grown quite a bit. We've been having a ball and it was great seeing old friends. Do we have regrets about not choosing South Africa and could we make this our new home?

South Africa is a vibe for sure 🎉, it is one of the places that I would consider. From Chicago ❤
I can understand why. HOWEVER, we encourage people to have a list of needs and wants, do an extensive scouting trip, and make their decisions. The scouting trip checklist can be found here: bit.ly/OBUresources.
Thank you for watching. Please forgive the delay in responding. Life has been lifin'. 🙄
Seems like South Africa is the move.I’m looking forward to visiting there in December.
Hey there GullahBae, (love the name) - 😃 Thank you so much for watching and for adding to the conversation. 💕
We encourage people to have a list of needs and wants, do an extensive scouting trip (live there for a month or longer), and make a decision based on that experience: scouting trip checklist can be found here: bit.ly/OBUresources 😉
Every country has its pros and cons.
You two look amazing, your skin is glowing
Ahhh, Rennie, girl - you know we got the 'touch up' filter on. 😆
😅love Capetown. I was there. 99-2007 Beautiful town the western Cape is the most beautiful part of the world. Chapman’s Peak was my Sunday drive from Tamboorsklef. Heaven.
Capetown is absolutely gorgeous and was the first time we looked at each other and said, "I could live here". 😆
I’m so encouraged by your story. Life happened to me in my mid 50s which set me back and has made retirement seems nearly impossible. But I’m determined to retire within the next five years and move to South Africa, where I spent my 50th birthday! Thank you for your transparency and encouragement!
Hey SB - I hope you tuned in yesterday! If you would've seen our circumstances when I was 53, you would've never thought that we could retire 4 years later - but I did!

I found you guys several weeks ago on the channel and I am really enjoying so much of you sharing your knowledge on what it’s like living abroad. I live in a small town in Louisiana called Thibodaux. (Ca…Jun) !
Hey Odessna, welcome. 🙏🏾. I've heard of Thibodaux. My peeps are from Melville and Bastraup. 😉
You both encourage me to not be worried and to focus my attention on getting it in gear instead.
Awww, thank you Shannon . Yes, worrying gets us no where. Have a plan, work it and know that EVERYTHANG is 'figure-outable' 😉

Don't know if you guys have heard of Dr. Asad and his wife also The Jones family who are also in South Africa doing great things; hope you guys have a chance to meet them ❤ 7:42
Ahhh shoot, wish I had seen this sooner. We will look them up - perhaps a future interview. 😉
Also The Real South Africa Mark and Dr. Blanton. They have been in South Africa quite long and are doing an EXCELLENT job in exposing the Real South Africa to the world.
Have a good visit. Looking forward to next weeks video stay blessed
Thank you dwalker, we are enjoying ourselves and friends on this adventure.
Welcome home family South Africa is home
The first time we came, a brilliant gentleman called Thando did a welcome home ceremony for us...I cried. 🤗
Yes! I love Ashley! I love you guys as well.
What's not to love - she's brilliant & beautiful! Love our AA-abroad community!
I live S.Africa, the nature scenes the mountains, sea and the sunsets are breathtaking. And like you said, I blend in. I will be moving there in the near future. You should definitely move there. I've been to Portugal, but I like it for vaca not to reside.
Hey Debora, please forgive the delay in responding. You know we're on vacation and I'm trying to be "in the moment". 😉
Tune in today - we are interviewing @AshleyInAfrika to see why she chose Tanzania and then South Africa.
Personally, until they figure out the infrastructure issues, the load shedding is deal-breaker. 🤷🏽♀️🥰
@OurBlackUtopia oh great, yes, I follow Ashley as well. I will be watching. Keep up the great work.
Thank you Debora! We had the AMAZING opportunity to go for a meal with Ashley - she is as down-to-earth and brilliant as she appears in her videos! I just love us💕🥰
@OurBlackUtopia yes, I concur 💯
Its law in South Africa that every child gets education, free education to kids whos parents earn under a certain wage. Loadshedding has an app to tell you what time your suburb will be switched off and on again, we cope very well with either a generator, solar or inverters. Wifi has a ups which stays on when power goes off. Rechargeable globes which stay on and recharge when power is back. Gas stove to cook on. I will Each suburb switches off different times so you can still go shopping or get takeaways in other suburbs. Many houses have solar getysers, all houses newly built are now built with solar geysers. You adapt to the circumstances.
Hey Charlotte- thanks for watching and for the info. We filmed a mini-documentary in Cape Town back in 2008 - then there was no subsidy that anyone could tell me about to help kids go to school. I am happy to hear that there are now more programs.
The load shedding situation ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS - we know about the app, but that doesn't help when you have business to do when it has to be done. And as you know did not exist the last time we were here. It is bad for the economy and it will dissuade digital nomads from coming here. I'm pissed off that my friends and family have said that it is worse now then it was 10 years ago! I have family that moved here shortly after Mandela was elected and I have friends that I've kept in touch with since we came in 2008.
@@OurBlackUtopia the free schooling has been around since 1996, surprised no one could tell you. Education Policy: School Fees
Education is a basic right. Section 29 (1) (a) of the South African Constitution states that "everyone has the right to a basic education, including adult basic education". Through the South African Schools Act of 1996, the national Department of Education has made educational attendance compulsory for all children aged seven to 15 (or the completion of Grade 9). Compulsory education places a responsibility not only on parents or caregivers to send their children to school, but also on the State to ensure that schools are accessible and affordable.
In South Africa, where the majority of children live in poverty, lack of money can be a barrier to schooling. This guide discusses two government policies designed to make education affordable to poor children. These are the School Fee Exemption policy and the No-fee Schools policy. Children at schools in poor areas are also able to access the National School Nutrition Programme (see Toolbox: Government programmes and policies: School feeding schemes)
I wonder if it actually works. I taught kids for a month in 2008 and I asked them, adults with kids, and the college students I was teaching with about families who could not afford it. They ALL SAID, then they don't go to school.
@@OurBlackUtopia I think they were simply unaware of the school fee exemtion policy. We applied for a domestic workers child to attend our child's school and he was taken in on exemption of school fees because she could not afford it. She also didn't know she could do it. I hope these people are now aware of the rules and their children get the education they deserve.
I wonder, Charlotte, if it happened in practice. It is the law in the US that we do not discriminate based upon race, sex, etc. and yet...
Welcome to SA ❤❤❤
Thank you 🙏🏾 - South African indigenous people are some of the most beautiful on earth - inside and out!
Learning other languages is good to keep your brain young.
Yep - that's why I haven't given up Spanish 😉
✨thank you💕🙏🏼
You are so welcome and thank you so much for watching and for your encouragement. 💕
Hey Halisi and Ric -Hoping you’re having a ball!🎉 watched this again today , hey, are you all having a Sunday session today ? I didn’t see your preview of the upcoming video for today ! Maybe I am missing the notification on my end -in any case, hope to see you two , in an hour or so!❤ you guys!😊be well!
Hey Kerenlouise yes we are going to do it.
Loadshedding is real. I'm in LA. I was doing a digital design collaboration with a friend in Bloemfontein, SA. The internet was constantly freezing. There were constant zoom appointment cancellations due to loadshedding. There is no schedule for a way to plan around it. Many normal folks don't have generators. We had to end the collab, and be friends anyway.
Hi! Correction, we do have a few apps that gives you updated information. Sadly, Cape Town is best structured around loadshedding. We have less loadshedding here because of how it's run.
Again we have other plans like solar investors and small ones for only Wi-Fi only
Judy, the app is not always right. We looked tonight for the area that were in and it said nothing more until tomorrow, yet we had a power outage tonight.
The key is to strengthen the grid and demand that this is remedied by 20XX - don't get used to it or 10 years from now it will still be going on.
Your friend was not serious, loadshedding is scheduled, there's an app that shows you everything.
An app for the loadshedding schedule. The irony is real. High tech for the low tech. Peace.@@sanelemwelase

I was looking forward to visiting Ghana in October, but I am cancelling, because I can't take the yellow fever vaccine, I'm allergic to eggs, and I'm over 60yrs, and afraid to take the chance!!!!
I'm sorry to hear you can not take the YF vaccine so you could go to Ghana. Have you seen an allergy specialist to see what can be done about this?
You can either get a doctors note or a notarized religious exemption. I did this in 2019 when I visited Ghana. Don’t be discouraged by a perceived “barrier”! You should be free to move about the world.
Hey Jane, Thank you for watching. Please forgive the delay in responding. Life has been lifin'. 🙄
Before asking for a waiver, check with your doctor and other sources about risks etc. In the meantime, South Africa doesn't demand any of the vaccines of most of the other African countries. 😉
I haven’t seen the video yet but the same thing happened to me and my friend! Visited Capetown and wound up getting a real estate agent to see some places 🤣. I’m still friends with the agent because I told her… I’ll be back 😊
CapeTown is addicting. I could see why folks want to live there...JoBurg too. If South Africa were not so far south it would probably be a contender for us.
Have you visited the Garden Route yet
We visited the Garden Route the first time we came to CapeTown 😉
Thank you so much for watching and for your question. 💕
They are feeding the sick care system. And now the the insurance companies give money monthly to use for food and utilities that you won’t be able to use in health food stores...however, when you find organic in supermarkets you have to know which ones have not sol sold . I learned about this many years ago...
In Portugal - all of the produce at the mom and pops are organic. Just look at the worm holes in the veggies or fruit. 🤣
I love that you might be considering moving to a country that’s under BRICS
The BRICS aint going top work....Its not a thing its just a now thing

I remember when U were in Portugal you said SA is not an option. you really hated the loadshedding situation, even the tone was very dismissive. Well, loadshedding is still alive and kicking. How's that going to work for you?
Did you watch the video? 😏
Afrikaans is not a language brought to the Cape. The language developed locally from Dutch mix with other languages.
Yes, we are aware of that - I had to study the history of SA for a class that I took in grad school that ended with a 1 month fellowship teaching through the University of Stellenbosch. If I said something contrary to that, I misspoke.

Q: My husband Sam and I are scheduling to visit South Africa in 2025; when is the best time to travel the region? We are looking to book our trip soon. We are traveling to Istanbul in a few weeks and we're making our checklist for sure.
The best time to visit SA, especially Cape Town, is January (after the holiday travel season, of course) to March, which is their summer. Their summer isn't that hot, with temperatures averaging low to mid 80s F, and it doesn't rain much. The downside of going during those months is that hotels will be more expensive because of higher demand, but it is still affordable, if you're American.
My wife and I went to Cape Town for our honeymoon and had the best time of our lives. Cape Town is beautiful and there's so many things to do there. Stay in the tourist sections and the suburbs and you'll be fine. Avoid the townships because they're too dangerous.
Hey Kayla, we are by no means the SA experts; that would be @AshleyInAfrika, whom we are interviewing this coming Sunday. Just know their seasons are opposite. We've been here in their winter and summer and both are pleasant . Winter has more rain and less tourists - prices are lower for housing and tours. Hope this helps!
During spring and summer months, from September to February
Although their winter is less expensive and no worse than a So. Cal winter...
I'm so happy to see the African Diaspora talking about Cape Town 😊 ❤ I understand why everyone is running to Jozi however the demographics shows that my people (coloured) are the majority here in Cape Town. The minority just have bigger land 😅😂
Hey Judy - WELCOME to the OBU family 🎉 - thank you for watching. We've actually spent more time in Cape Town than Joburg but - we have family there so... 🤗
@@OurBlackUtopia 😊 well then, we family now, you have no say in the matter 😂👪 💕 🤗 Cape Town will always welcome you 💖
@@judyswile so if you are coloured they give you bigger land in cape than black people interesting.
@@missgndlovu6946 That's not what I said. 😊 I'm part the majority and the minority has bigger land. Think about it. ✨😂
@@missgndlovu6946 97% of the land in Western Cape province(Cape Town) is owned by Europeans, 3% is shared by Black people (Coloureds, Africans and indians). The Western Cape is governed by europeans who buy land and develop it for the benefit of europeans not anyone else.

i am a white south african and borne and bread and my people have been here for more than 300 years just as african and more than many black people...corruption and bad government is the problem
Hello - thank you for watching. I do believe those who today have been reduced to calling themselves 'Black' have been on the Continent since the beginnings of what we call modern humans. There is no other continent that has produced so-called Black people indigenously. Agreed that corruption is the problem in my beloved SA.
Q Are they priced the same❓
Is what priced the same? ☺️
Came accross your channel by mistake. South Africa for your information provides free and subsidized housing for its population. Older people over the age of 60 who have no significant pension receive social grants of more than 2000 rands per month. South Africa has 96% literacy rate because the government is providing free education and at tertiary level and education is free for children of parents who earn less than 350 000 rands. Our tertiary education is among the best in the world. Children of poor parents also receive social grants. Remember black ruled SA is only 29 yrs old and has never colonised any country to accumulate its wealth but beside its age and neo colonial obstacles, SA's nominal GDP is bigger than that of Portugal which has been looting colonies for hundreds of years selling black people as slaves How can a descendant of viscious slave trade system be proud to live among people who caused painful damage to her/his ancestors. It simply does not make any logical sense. By the way South Africa has a relatively better public health care, which is free. I think our private health care system is better than the health care in Portugal. We have a ton of problems just like any other country and we are working on them. You know very little about SA, so make a thorough research before spewing vitriol about my country. Next time inform your viewers not to make silly cheap jokes about SA languages. They are not funny.
We love the languages and meant ABSOLUTELY no offense. We are trying to learn some of the basic terms in few of the mother tongues.
The mother land is a beautiful place to be sure. Yet, Europe is calling me. Is that Portuguese language getting easier to comprehend? I, myself, love French….
I didn't realize it was getting easier Scarlet until I just heard it, here in Cape Town playing on a UA-cam advertisement. 😃
Keep up the good work! We’re rooting for you both! @@OurBlackUtopia

it's amazing what media feeds us because I am scared of America too , the fear of being by police, gang violence etc😢 but we should definitely reside where we feel safe so I understand your point.
Hey KJ - we understand that we have not been fed a balanced diet of news from the continent of Africa. Remember, it is a continent not a country. Each country has a different government and therefore a different economic opportunities, safety, etc. South Africa is as safe as NYC if not safer...less guns.

Crazy how you believe everything u read on western media, the power it has over yall is crazy.
It is ubiquitous.
Q Are there chemtrail❓
Nope. Cape Town is renowned for our Garden route (wine) and then fresh produce is very important to us. If you do see something that resemble a Chem trail, it's not, it's salt they dispense the air to create rain especially in areas that are experiencing droughts. 😊
Hey sweetie -are you sure this is not a conspiracy theory? 🤗
The real problem is not corruption but lack of investment and income. The government has a small budget.
My family and friends that live here, both Americans who have been here since childhood and folks born and raised in South Africa, say it is corruption. ALL governments are corrupt - some just more than others.
I don't know if you're a local or not but saying corruption is not the problem is just weird. This is probably the most corrupt government in the world.
