We used to have a local butcher shops, corner store shops, an about 8 petrol service stations, 2 newspaper shops (that supplied the mum & dad corner shops with news papers etc), we also had 6 local cafes, 3 bakery shops, 6 motor vehicle repair and service centres, All these local owned business employed and trained local towns people, I forgot to mention our local market growers supplied all our veggies, bananas from QLD, apples came from Orange or the blue mountains, so we were pretty much self suffiecent The multinational fast food take aways came which saw the demise of local cafes you starting to see the picture now. It was the same in most towns etc. But! these multinational stores decimated the local family business, there are the bully tactics of one Multination store sending out their staff to check on the prices of the local butcher shop and do you know why? so they can under cut his prices, sounds like fair game does it? All these local mum & dad business were within walking distance from most homes and now, we all have to drive to the centre of our town to get our groceries etc. Why does only one multination have the bottle etc return centre????? Nah! I have had my rant for the day. I miss a good milkshake and a decent real meat hamburger my friend.
So just who are the ones that decided to turn their backs on those local businesses? Supporters of the big corporations blaming the same big corporations for ruining their town. 😅 WIIFM hypocrisy.
And they are pushing self service, yes you pick your products from the store and you are the check out chick, Mmmmmm less staff to payout, no discount if you save the company employee wages.
Woolies does the same thing. They both kept a bunch of items listed on their websites, for a couple of years, but it just says they're currently not available. If an item isn't available after a certain duration, they should have to remove the listing from their websites.

If the government is serious about fining people for price gouging, they should start fining people for price gouging with private house rentals. There was even an exposé about it on the ABC, a few years ago. A big part of it is the rort that is negative gearing. It's literally taking money from everyone and giving it to investors. (I do mean that quite literally.) One of the main route causes (if not the main cause) of exorbitant prices across the board is people being ripped off with renting houses and, to a lesser degree, businesses being ripped off with their building rent prices.
This is the essence of free market capitalism. Companies are meant to make zero profit (that is loss and profit in balance). There should be as many competitors as possible to prevent cartels. It is not in the people or a government interest to have big companies being successful and becoming monopolies. In fact, supermarkets should go in or out of business depending on how they adapt to the market. This ensures fair prices for consumers, farmers, most jobs, most tax and most diversity of products. Anyone feeling bad owns a share in the supermarket or is insane (as going against own interest). Supermarkets should be like coffee shops in Australia.
Here's an idea have a government organisation set the price that they have to pass on to farmers and set the price on groceries. For example all grocery shops should have your 5 of thebasic needs for under $20 for pensioners.

If you hear those words run there opposite way fast. Government will regulate every thing and tie it up in red tape. Australia is under siege of over regulation and whistle blowers are treated as criminals, ask Peter Sawyer, etc Bob Hawke had him crucified and silenced. Things have changed in Australia and shopping and things have changed in the quality of Australian products. Growing up I would eat a lot of shark because it had no bones but now in supermarkets you can only buy bone fish and a lot of the products warm that they could be bones inside the fish but on one occasion I got a one and a half inch piece of bone in a fillet it was disgusting it stuck in my throat it was terrible. I actually brought a piece of chicken that was wrapped in bacon with pumpkin and feta in a supermarket and I went home and I cooked it but I didn't cook it all the way through and it was pink and still frozen on the inside it contains salmonella and I got sick for a week and it took me another week to actually get my strength back when I contacted the food of New South Wales they told me basically that all chicken should be treated as if it contains salmonella and you required to cook it out do we still live in the same Australia we believe we did.

I can't name the company, but I know for certain, when one of them went on the share market, their prices shot up. Some items had about 10% mark-up. As soon as there were shares, there was 20-30% mark-up.
Smoking costs the economy billions of dollars more per year, in smoking-related illnesses, than the amount of tax those drug addicts pay in taxes on their cancer sticks. I'd bet there are similar statistics for all the alcoholics who feel compelled to keep buying their toxic liquid.
