Whoever was running the sound board is an idiot - Gerard's mike is wayyyyy too low. Probably a low-payscale "house" sound tech. The only way to really get it right is to have your own sound crew, but that costs major bank.
I've also never understood why sound crews ignore the fact that your sound check is NOT the final adjustment. The sound dynamic in any venue is drastically different empty vs. full to capacity. It's not rocket science, yet some sound techs STILL don't get it right.
One of my biggest pet peeves - guitar levels too high, vocals too low. It happens a LOT.
I'm not just blowing smoke rings, either. I know the person who designed and collaborated the sound system for Thunder Valley Casino's Amphitheater. We've had conversations about this, and I've been at concerts there where he supervises the soundboard. His mixes are *flawless.*
