  • WRIST or NO WRIST?
    Should you use your wrists for chipping and pitching?
    This question is one of the most common ones I hear when discussing the short game and shots around the green with players looking to improve their short game.
    The short answer is YES... but HOW YOU USE YOUR WRISTS depends on a few factors. It depends on what type of shot you are trying to hit. What the lie is like. Do you want the ball to fly high or low? Do you want it to stop close to where it lands, or release once it hits the ground. You also need to factor in what the lie is like and what the ground conditions are like, as well as any slope that you are playing from, or need to land your ball on.
    The wrists are involved in EVERY single shot you hit in golf - even putting. Eliminating them completely is neither possible, nor desirable. Managing the wrists is the key to having success with your chipping and pitching around the green, and understand exactly HOW TO MOVE THE WRISTS will free you from the shackles of your one-way thinking when it comes to these shots and unlock an entire new world of possibilities when it comes to your shot selection around the green.
    In this video, I will use the HACKMOTION wrist sensor to explain and demonstrate how the wrists move for 2 different types of shots around the green - LOW and HIGH - along with the set-up required for each shot.

    Wow, wow, wow, I really like that detail on opening/closing the club face and marrying that with raising/lowering the club. Opening the club face and lowering the club for a high chip makes so much more sense now. Awesome!

    Always great content, but this one strikes me particularly hard. I have been honing my game and really focused on 130 yds in last year and I dropped from a 13 to an 8.6. One of my next areas of focus is the chipping area. I always fooled myself and frankly put more pressure on my iron play to not miss greens due to a bad chipping and pitching motion/results. Some people are good at it naturally and I am not one of them. I am here to say you can only avoid this so long then you have to put the work in on the chipping/pitching to save par or birdie par 5’s when you don’t hit the green in 2. Thank you so much for the content and taking the time to focus on key subjects and finding illustrative ways to prove physically what your try to feel. This type of content works for visual and feel players. Awesome!

    Wow, Rob! Great insight into the short game! Thanks so much! I've always used a strong grip for every shot. Your method makes sense to change the grip in order to hit the ball higher. I've always had better luck using my wrists in every shot. Poor contact, especially with thin lies & deep grass if you take the wrists out of the shot. What about short bunker shots??? Weak grip there, also? Thanks for all your help!

  • @tompem

    Most would think that on a short chip, that one would swing around a stable head. This is a very detailed video, but you fail to point out how as the chipping club goes back, your head and weight moves FORWARD. I should think this motion is pretty essential. It counter balances the weight of the club and arms going back.

    I've been struggling horribly with my chipping, going back and forth between using wrist hing and no wrist. So bad that I'm putting from 20 ft from the green and losing my desire to play this wonderful game. I play with a strong grip and I've never heard it explained like this. I'm excited to get out and work on using both methods with the weaker grip depending on the shot. Hopefully this will help with the right hand flinch I've developed and build some confidence.

  • @54fighting5
    @54fighting5 2 роки тому

    This is a very interesting video, especially relating to the weaker grip. I have a couple questions:
    1) one method I tried was from something I saw online that teaches to stand closer to the ball, shaft more upright, in order to keep the heel of the club more off the ground to prevent it from "grabbing" and opening the face more at impact, or prevent chunking the chip. Does your method use this theory? Or is that only for a particular long/short grass lie?
    2) do you adjust your address closer/farther from the ball based on length of grass in the lie, or mainly based on distance of green to work with?
    Thanks for posting this video.

  • @shumandy301

    What should be the angle of attack at impact when using the wrsit hinge for a high shot? Should it be still trying to compress the ball then turf or it should use the bounce to kind of hitting the ground first similar to sand shot or flop shot?

  • @catshitonthecarpet8520
    @catshitonthecarpet8520 2 роки тому

    I didn’t learn anything today but i really enjoyed this video. It was the first time I’ve seen loft, shaft raise/lower, target line and wrists all in one chipping video. IMO, the only piece missing was talking about the bounce that was added when adding loft or removed when delofting, and how that leading edge interacts with the ground.

    • @catshitonthecarpet8520
      @catshitonthecarpet8520 2 роки тому

      @@golftecasia Well, I’ve seen it before, but never with all of those elements in the same vid. I think the ultimate chipping video would be THIS one, plus Bounce, thickness of lies (hard pan, thick rough, obv done outside), ball above/below your feet (with the magnetic stick again), leaning left/right which adds/reduces loft. All that in under an hour? Masterclass may be in play

    Great video -- being able to use two distinct versions of the chip shot can only be advantageous. With the chip-and-run, one needs to be clear when an extended roll will be a good thing. Otherwise, the controlled high-flight/short-roll can help "place" the ball as near to the hole as possible. Wonderful video. Thanks Rob!

    Very revealing the concept of where the loft is pointing with the face rod.

    Great video....i think 2 things...1.the lie..tight/fluffy...2..how much green to work with....both of these dictate which club to use as well as less or more wrist.......very tight lies tend to lead to more chunks/skulls for the less skillful....ive always try to land ball 1 step on green an let it run to hole if possible....especially if tight lie....that helps me choose sand/pitch/9/8/7....to chipwith depending on length the ball runs one step on to the hole....the lob wedge should really be reserved for only ...for when there is no other way to get it close....most often...the lob wedge gets used way to often by non pros....who use it all the time!....but they hit 500 balls a day!!!..great video.
