Researching in North Carolina an ancient site was discovered during housing development: A huge pyramid mound. My avatar show a photo realistic face, and I’ve got several of these painted pieces of white quartz with human images on them that everyone can recognize. It’s upsetting everybody, please advise.
Natural pigments were charcoal, graphite and manganese for black. Hematite and cinnabar for red. Diatomaceous shale and pure limestone for white. Limonite for yellow and the rarest of all pure serpentine for the blue (The Pleito creek Chumash rock art site in San Emigdio Mountains. Binders used to make the pigments fast to rock surface examples were fats (bear) and proteins (saliva, egg whites, and even milk) And a binder from plants came from wild cucumber seed mucilige. It is believed that pictographs by the Chumash and neighbors were the result of being under the influence of Jimson weed /Datura by shamans and/or male initiation ceremonies. The well known Chumash painted cave by San Marcos Pass has what are believed stylized motifs of jimson weed seed pods!
