This brings me back. I had a Saint Bernard for many years. She had to groomed once a month. After her groom you had to tell her how beautiful she was and how good she smelled or she would ignore you until you did. 🤣
I was going to say the same thing we had a male St. Bernard. We didn’t take him to the groomers though, because he had too much anxiety. He really loves to be brushed because I calmed him down but we didn’t put him in a groomer situation because he had too much anxiety, seeing that thumbnail made me up cry we had to put him down December 3, 2021. He lived a good 10 years and his name was Samson. I would sleep with him when he became older on the bathroom floor I wanted to cherish every moment I had left of him. He was the first family dog i had. we put him down because he had a tumor. I came back home from school and even though I knew he was put down while I was at school and for some reason I still thought he was going to be there.
This girl must not only be a professional dog cleaner, but also communication expert, animal psychologist, safety professional, physically fit, have a control over own feelings and impulses, diplomatic skills for dealing with owners, hygiene inspector and great observer of any second of given situations. My mother told me that when she was 16, she asked my Nan if they could get a dog. The house was small and the garden was tiny but my Nan agreed to a little dog. My mother went to Battersea dogs home to rescue one. She came home with a St. Bernard because no one wanted him and he was unwell. Once the shock of having a small horse in the lounge wore off, they kept him. So glad they did. Great job as usual..the boy looked very handsome :)
I was that child who brought home the pets… one such was a Staffy that “followed me home” . She had 10 puppies 2 weeks later. We were only supposed to have her until the puppies were weaned. She stayed with us for another 19 years. We found out she had previously been a fight bait dog. Suzy was a gentle but fierce protector for our family. 70lbs of pure muscle and ❤
Just wanted to say thank you for recommending the coral brush all the time--I broke down and bought one for my mom's two beastie Maine Coon mixes, and they were actually spooked at first because it was the first time a brush has ever made it past their compacted undercoats to the skin! Got almost an entire cat off of each, and now they're going to be matt free forever.
Wow! Well I'm glad it worked out so well. 🙂 I've noticed that some brushes can do a great job getting through all of the hair, but they also end up scratching and irritating the skin, which is a total bummer. It sounds like this one is perfect. 👍

This reminds me of my visit to their birthplace - the St. Bernard hospice on the pass between Switzerland and Italy. Even the puppies were huge! I remember the distance between the ears of an adult dog were wider than my outstretched hand.
Unfortunately the monks no longer raise saints there, they have been transferred to another entity who is continuing the breeding. The tourists were a big problem apparently, with people annoying or otherwise trying to touch the dogs, they had to install a glass wall to stop it at one point.
I went there and visited, it was quite a drive, bought one of the St. Bernard carved sling shots for my son and they took it away at the airport, quite stupid.
Hi Vanessa, I think Nelson really loved the dryer. He got his foot going and salsa dancing. Some saint Bernards just bark a lot. Especially when happy or excited (another good example of this is Lily from the asher house, she barks alot) stunning transformation 😍
He seemed to really enjoy the bath part. As soon as he got wet he just stood there and looked like he was enjoying the feeling. And most of the drying...he was enjoying his first ever Spa Day.

Well, done, Vanessa, for doing your normal great job on a big dog that’s never been professionally groomed before and doing it without assistance. Nelson looks magnificent and his behavior for a first-timer was really good.
You know you are in your happy place when you are in the bath with a beautiful dog talking about poop and the consistency. Nelson has a great temperament. Thank you for sharing.
My favorite! Saints are pretty 'talkative' dogs. My saints all grunted during baths and barked when I hit the sweet spots with brushes or the dryer that they can't reach.
Have you ever considered creating the book of dog? Tips on grooming at home, behavior to look for, breed information, etc? Illustrated with happy hoodie pictures? Maybe a newsletter or blog people could subscribe to?
Beautiful animal. My sister & brother-in-law had x2 at the same time. A love of slobber & fur evident. A gentle breed but can be stubborn & with attitude. & this observation coming from a husky owner. Love your videos & the educational commentary that you always provide.
It's the Mastiff side of them showing through. Newfies are the same way. They won't generally hurt a fly, but if they decide they aren't doing something, they aren't, and they are big enough that most people can't really make them do it either lol. I love them both, the big hard headed goofballs that they are.
That was my childhood dog. I always remembered her as gentle giant with a sassy attitude. And she only liked one game, escape the yard and play catch me if you can. She loved teasing us around the block. Each time we got close, she would run a few feet away, look at us while we tried to catch up & the cycle would repeat 😅
@@jesmasa1 That sounds like my husky, escaping, running but not so far that I can't see him, him staying there just sniffing the grass, etc. till I get within 10-12 feet away before taking off again and repeating the process. If there's people around, he'll go up to them for pets, but unless they grab his collar, he takes off again just as I get there... 🤣 I have to question if he just decided to take me for a walk to explore where I never took him on a walk, because that's exactly where he would go every...single...time, including across a 6 lane plus turn lane major road which had my heart in my throat! I moved after he did that twice, even though he knew how to cross without getting near any cars. I had taught him on walks as a 10 month old puppy to stop at roads to make sure there was no cars coming and to wait if there were, and as smart as he is, I think it stuck with him. He would be pretending to just be sniffing something on the side of the road, but there were no cars coming when he ran across.
@@Zoobamafoo lol yup I'm pretty sure she allowed us to catch her only when she decided the game was over. You're so lucky you had a husky. I used to see a beautiful husky on my way home from school. Sitting on the front porch like it was a throne, observing its subjects.
I used to live in Bern, Switzerland and as a child I would always go to the Natural History Museum to see Barry! (taxidermised St. Bernard) If you google “Barry Saint Bernard dog” you can see what the breed looked like in the early 1800s. They say Barry rescued over 40 people during his time as a mountain rescue dog. 😊
Seeing Barry was a surprise for me, mostly because it was shocking to see how much the breed has changed. He was a fit, solid dog, and modern St Bernards are so soft and saggy in comparison that it’s impossible to imagine them doing any kind of job. ☹️
@@VelvetWurmWow, you are right! Barry looks like solid muscle, doesn't he? The St. Bernards of today are still muscular, but Barry looks a bit closer to the athletic body of the Boxer or the Doberman than the current breed.
Nelson's a very good boy for the bath! I hope he stays good for everything else too...the title, however, tells me otherwise! As an autistic person, these videos are so nice to watch as the water sound and how calm you are is incredibly soothing! I've even accidentally picked up the way you say "sorry" as a part of my echolalia, particularly towards animals! Edit: Woohooo!! Good job Nelson, even if he was a bit of a barker!

Lol as you put the Happy Hoodie on, he was so good and patient, until you said '"And if you don't like it, we shall remove it". He seemed to think "Oh, I have a choice here?" and tried to take it off. 😂
He was incredibly good for a first groom. A darling big boy 😊👏🏼
Newfoundlands St Bernard's mountain dog
Can you imagine the relief people had upon seeing them in the snow!
Hi Vanessa, I think Nelson really loved the dryer. He got his foot going and salsa dancing. Some saint Bernards just bark a lot. Especially when happy or excited (another good example of this is Lily from the asher house, she barks alot) stunning transformation 😍
You say "nasty critter" with affection. So cute!💕
He seemed to really enjoy the bath part. As soon as he got wet he just stood there and looked like he was enjoying the feeling. And most of the drying...he was enjoying his first ever Spa Day.
He loves the dryer!! It’s scratching all his itchy spots!! Vanessa, you are the absolute best. I love your patience and your grooming skills never cease to amaze me!! Your videos are all amazing, but, my all time fav was your doodle shave down. That dogs’ gratitude and relief as that blanket of hot, dirty mess was coming off was so “happifying” I almost cried🤣. You are the best!!!!! ❤❤❤
Those little wiggles and shakes while he was being blow sdied is the cutest thing ever 😍❤️
He was trying to help!
I have a saint too, very laid back, won’t hurt a flea and yes they grunt and groan nothing to worry abt Vanessa.
I love watching your videos hes absolutely beautiful 🥰 seems very well behaved especially for his first groom ❤
The little foot stomp when she started drying his neck ❤
You are so brave.
He looks so much better after! I like how the owners have kept him lean, that will help him live longer and have less joint issues!
Yet he is a 4 1/2 half year male who has never been professionally groomed, I mean wth.
@@texasgirl6000He’s a rescue most likely.
Many people groom their own dogs. Professional grooming is expensive!
I would like to know how they kept him lean. My dog is too heavy. She has to have special food due to allergies .She is not losing weight although we have cut her to 3 cups. She is a 125 Neufie/ Berner.
@@texasgirl6000 I mean if you can keep your dog in pretty good condition by grooming them yourself, and professionally groom as needed that's good enough. Like in this case, owners probably though he needed professional groom. While the dog wasn't in best condition, it also wasn't bad. And who knows what the condition at home is. Maybe for some reason they could not groom him properly recently and decided to take him to professional instead.
The little leg thump!!! That has my heart
Vanessa did it, she said "eh". How Canadian of her. Nelson watered your plants for ya, what a good boi.
He’s so beautiful 😅..good job
I stumbled upon your channels last evening and spent a few hours watching videos. I don't why, I want intrigued by them. Found them very entertaining and relaxing. I love dogs, but am not a dog owner. I was also impressed by your providing you excellent services for free. I'm so glad that you are able to do that and thought it only appropriate to support this effort with at least a subscribe and like.
Same here. I'm not a dog owner but I love watching her groom these dogs especially the really large breeds. Her channel showed up in my feed sometime during covid and I'm so glad it did!
❤❤❤😊
I think it's her hilarious commentary 😂
Welcome! It’s not hard to get hooked! Cute animals and a real professional at work doing what she’s good at to benefit the community.
These videos always put a big friggin' smile on my face. Props to you for what you do.
Special lady and a big special baby ❤️
You’re brave!!!! These dogs get bigger and bigger
Obsessed with the big "scary" dogs looking cranky in their happy hoodies 🤣
I love these gentle giants. They're so lovable.
Thank you for showing the effort it takes to groom big dogs--helps me understand the work required of my groomer and the value of regular care.
What a pretty boy! God bless you for taking such tender care of this big furry angel.
There's no such thing as a creature so majestic that won't look ridiculous in the happy hoody, and he knows that...
😂😂😂
nelson looks sooo nice. good job again
Well, done, Vanessa, for doing your normal great job on a big dog that’s never been professionally groomed before and doing it without assistance. Nelson looks magnificent and his behavior for a first-timer was really good.
He did very well, although he was clearly anxious. You are absolutely calming, very good instincts and observations.
You know you are in your happy place when you are in the bath with a beautiful dog talking about poop and the consistency. Nelson has a great temperament. Thank you for sharing.
He sure is a handsome beast! Love big dogs.
He's such a weird giant dude. Probably the first Bern I've seen with so much energy and sass, they usually just look like they're about to melt.
He's such a good boy ❤
My favorite! Saints are pretty 'talkative' dogs. My saints all grunted during baths and barked when I hit the sweet spots with brushes or the dryer that they can't reach.
I noticed that it's almost always that underside when he starts backing.
Wow, if a husky owner says a dog is stubborn, that says something. I always thought of St. Bernards as big protective walruses who loved kids.
OMG!! The face in the happy hoodie!!
Sadly most of the purebred dogs have been ruined by breeders.
@@VelvetWurmWow, you are right! Barry looks like solid muscle, doesn't he? The St. Bernards of today are still muscular, but Barry looks a bit closer to the athletic body of the Boxer or the Doberman than the current breed.
Thank you for sharing this! 🤗
Thank you for the suggestion. That was fascinating!
That’s a beautiful dog.
What a good boy for a first full groom! He’s so sweet.
What a well-behaved and patient dog. Beautiful as well
"It wasn't the most solid of poops" said with snarky side eye. 🤣🤣
What a beautiful, trim boi Nelson is. ❤
Ah yes, the anxiety poop.
What a good boy! Love the way you talked to him. Excellent job
I think he sang the song of his people, late in the groom. 😂 ❤
I’m also neurodivergent and these videos are so pleasing for me, as well as informative. Learning about the different breeds and their unique personalities is so interesting.
Fun, interesting commentary about things I'd otherwise never be interested in feels like the reason that youtube was created. This channel is a perfect encapsulation of all those things. It's simply fun and informative...no more, no less. I think it's so cool that these videos have helped to give you a successful career as a groomer. Thank you for this wonderful channel to follow. :)
Vanessa, I especially love seeing you with a doggie that outweighs you. 😄😄😄
I love the way you narrate.👍👍
I do love seeing the dog's (or cat's, or rat's) original fur colouring come out during the groom. They go from a uniform yuck colour to all these shades and highlights. It's so lovely.
I have a brindle mix and it's really cool to see all the different variations in her coat. Nobody talks about orange stripped dogs, lol.
@@toneddef Oh my, you unlocked a memory. My old mum's dog, and I'm going back 30 years now, was like that. Yes, the brindle is beautiful - really striking. And just after a bath? Stunning.
Finally a professional groomer who knows something about dogs and understands them! Great job.
Oh my gosh - he loved getting his chest blow dried! That back leg started thumping with joy !😊
And then he wanted to direct ‘Higher! More to the left! Do my chest again!’ 🤣
This was the first time I've seen the "top" of the shower - and I've seen Vanessa wash some of her really big customers. Vanessa, you did an amazing solo job on this massive dog. Especially, since he was new to the "Vanessa Spa Experience".
It is always inspiring to watch someone do what they are passionate about, while teaching the rest of of us.
Thank you.
Nelson is gorgeous! And he was a really good boy for his grooming session. I love my St. Bernards, just big teddy bears!
Julie, couldn't help but envision tile floors with drooly marks and having to tiptoe around to avoid slip-and-fall! 🤣🐶💓
I really wanted to see you give him a treat. 💜💙💝
A most generous tipper inside and out!
Absolutely amazing job. I think a huge part of his comfort level in letting you do most anything to him, comes from your comfortable position mentally. You are relaxed and this makes him open to the whole procedure. I would simply die to have a dog like this. Though at 70 he would constantly be knocking me down. So......its fun to watch you do your thing and experience seeing these huge dogs. I admire your work...and look forward to seeing more dogs having their bath and being cared for by someone who really understands them.
Vanessa, speaking of keeping your distance in case a dog lunges, I’m wondering if, in fact, you have ever been bitten? A few cautionary anecdotes from you would be welcome! Love your channel and always recommend it to fellow dog lovers - so many people say “oh yes, I watch her all the time!” ❤️
Yes! I would also love to hear some stories from her.
Nelson was happy to water your plants for you, too! 😂
That is definitely a full Nelson.
😂
Watching your back-catalog... The big handsome appears to be singing your praises during the b,owdryer, IMHO! ❤❤❤😂😂😂
Nelson gets the most handsome good boy award! Congratulations, Nelson! ❤🏆I even like the interesting barks you made when getting blow dried. You've got some sass Nelson, but not too much. Just the right amount. 😊
He is a beautiful boy. Bless you for taking on these grooms, on these huge dogs. Most groomers would not take on dogs this large. Thank you, again! ❤️
I had 2 St. Bernard’s growing up🥰 Nelson is one handsome fella and looks amazing after his groom! You do amazing work and are so patient with them all! Thank you for sharing ❤
That was fun to watch. Nelson was such a good dog. He was pretty calm when you clipped his paws and his coat looked so clean and fluffy after the shower! Beautiful!
You did great with Nelson! I translated his "woof woof" into "won't somebody rescue me PLEASE?"!!! 😄😆😂🐶💓
I love watching how calm and confident you are even with the big “iffy” dogs. ❤
Oh Nelson did so well to say it was his first groom and you did too Vanessa , he would make two of you ! A few barks but he was a well behaved lad for you. It was funny to see him get a 'motorbike leg' when you put the dryer on him! You must have found a sweet spot !! Thank you
hes such a happy boy!! he was confused but also loved the dryer LOL
I have a big soft spot for St. Bernie's. My Aunt had one and every summer when we would go to visit her in Colorado I looked so forward to playing with him! Miss you Max, you were the best! ♥🐶👍
You are great lady and doing a great job and very good teacher
Thank you for being such a wonderful person I respect you
