PRPC - The Day Before I Left - 1988

- PRPC, Philippine Refugee Processing Center, located in the mountains of Bataan, was about a 3-hour bus ride from Manila. The PRPC opened in 1980 and closed around 1995. I worked there from 1984 to 1988. More than 400,000 Indochinese refugees (Vietnamese, Khmer, Lao, ethnic Chinese, and some other minority groups) passed through its gates. Almost all of them had already been accepted for resettlement in the U.S., and almost all of them had already spent months and years in first asylum camps in the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Indonesia. During their stay in the PRPC, the refugees underwent final processing, health screenings, and studied English and U.S. culture.
Most of the photos in this album were taken on one day...the day before I left. They're not the most beautiful, and they don't include ceremonies or friends' faces. I took the photos to remember the look of the camp. What the photos can't express is what the PRPC felt like...the amazing mix of languages, backgrounds, and cultures, the old hatreds and loyalties, the night sounds from the forest, the steam rising from the earth after a sudden downpour, the sound of students repeating an English phrase, the sound of prayers from a temple at sunset..."

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for those precious memories. I was a teenager staying in Palawan and Bataan from 1988 to 1989. These pictures brought me back to yesteryear. Thank you for helping and saving our souls. 😢❤
i came to Bataan camp when i was very young by myself. i used to live with other adult people. although time went by so fast, bataan was the most memoriable place that i always remember. i cannot say it more. i hope that whenever i have the opportunity to visit that place. i used to live in the section 10. i would sincerely thank you the government of the phillipines and the us government for allowing me to have the kind of freedom and new opportunities for me to accomplish many things in my life. i am so lucky to gain my education in a hard way. all my family members are still living in vietnam. i was working so hard to finish my education by myself. thanks to god for helping me to be healthy. without america, i dont have the life as i have been living as today. i devoted my life to study medicine instead of becoming a priest. i want to remind that if you have a dream of becoming something you need to work hard. its worth it. put all in. i faced many hardships when i was a student especially growing up as an immigrant kid without parents.
And philippines makes sure that u will be in safe hands
It is a tough life everywhere we go and we need to focus on what we do and take action. Living in Bataan camp by yourself it must be very hard time for you I felt so sad when it came Vietnamese new year (TE^/T ) anyone live in neighborhood six?

Thank you for posting these priceless memories! My dad & I were there for 7 months, Dec 1989 to June 1990, before leaving for the U.S. Watching this clip brings back so many memories for me even though I was only about 9 or 10 at the time we were in the camp 😭 Forever grateful to the Philippino government for taking our people! 😘🙏
I was there in 1986 to 87 when I was 9 and turned 10. Probably the most memorable time of my life. I still remember it as it was yesterday. My parents and I will forever be grateful to the opportunity. Thank you to all that involved. Makes me want to go back but then everything will be so different. Would be great to meet some people like you who shared similar experiences. We were both there at similar ages. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences Lan.
Wow, i was there as the same time as you did. I pretty sure it was cycle 139th. We left there on June 1990, more than 30 years had passed but those memories feel like they happened yesterday. I was about 11 at the time. Maybe, we've known each other back then. I and my family stayed in the section 1, 114 I . What was your section? @@
Am enjoying the freedom in Philippine!!!,they treated refugees with respect ✊
You're welcome, we ourselves are refugees in our own homeland. 1986 Edsa Revolution. I was 17 at that time in the streets trying to get rid of a 20 years Dictator. I'm glad Philippines in its darkest time managed to open the doors to many Vietnamese/Cambodians/Chinese citizens who suffer hardships both economic and political persecution. We are all one answering to the call of humanity. I migrated myself to the USA and met a Vietnamese lady my age. We both became a refugee in the USA on a different perspective. I heard about boat people but it never sink into my head until I saw all your flight and the danger you all have been through. I'm glad you all turned out good and happy. If I was given a choice I will never leave my simple life in the Philippines 🇵🇭. The village I see here is the exact village I grew up just in the other island. Simple, fresh air, all green everywhere. My parents so adore the USA. They had a good life when it was still a territory of the USA. It went downhill after that. At a very young age I have no clue. All I know I live free, careless life. I was sent to the USA not on my own free will. I still dream of going back home. Sitting in the grass overlooking the green ricefields and mountains behind our backyard. Thank you to our brothers in Vietnam. You opened my eyes to the many things I took for granted. 💖

Until now I can still remember all my childhood experiences and memories there when I was 5yrs old living in those wooden bungalows and walked to school every morning. My family and I left around 1988 also. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! I had beautiful memories of PRPC I left in 1985 for Hawaii. Philippine people were very kind to us! Salamat!
Thank you so much for making this priceless video available to all of us who had spent time at this unforgettable refugee camp. I stayed there for six months and left in 1985. My English teacher was Ms. Karen from Chicago.
Mr. Gaylord Wayne Barr, owner of these pictures, passed away on May 30, 2015 in Roanoke, VA. He was well loved not only by his friends and family, but also by his former ESL(English as a Second Launguage) students from the refugee camps that he worked. He was a man with great compassion for all. At his request, there was no funeral services of any kind, and his ashes were scattered in his home town, Yakima, WA.
I was there June of 88 - March of 89.If he still there during those times I think I have seen him but don’t know his name
So sad to know Gaylord has passed away..sadder that he was just close by and didn't know he took was in Virginia..Roanoke is now but a sad place..forgotten by time and left alone by modernization.RIP,Gaylord.

I was there from February 1987 to February 1988 as a Vietnamese refugee. Thank you to all the Thai people who work there to assist us. Thank you to UNHCR and its staffs. Thank you to all the organizations that were there to help us. Many English teachers from Canada, USA, Australia, volunteered there. All the medical staffs from all countries. Since then, I have settled in Canada, and never have a chance to meet up with my friends that were there, my bosses, 1 Thai lady, and 1 Thai doctor when I volunteered for 6 months working in the hospital in the transit camp. 30 years have passed, now I TRULY know the price of freedom. Wow! watching this bring me tears. Mr. Gaylord Barr, thank you so much for capturing an amazing memories . What an amazing journey for my family and I. I was 13 , we stay there from mid 1983 to 2/1984. I don't remember what section or building I stay at... but I do remembered I am close to the entrance of the camp. I used to always stood and watched and waved to bus load of people coming/leaving the camp. Does anyone know if the camp site can be visited? Hoping I can be connected with old classmate our English teacher name Victoria Villoria-
My family was here from 1983 oct and went to France 🇫🇷 1984- Group Kota 77.
