I live in Syria, I'm 11, despite the ongoing war here and the bad economic conditions, my dad bought me a violin with 25$ so I can learn how to play. He always says that the only way to forget the war horrors is to listen and play your own music. You are wonderful, Rob. I love you so much
Dear Elenda, please also get a guitar. Learn some chords. Do the same with piano (keyboard?). I am shure it is possible to get cheap instruments. Music is not only classical. You know the Beatles? Good luck and God bless you.
Rob: *Plays cheap violin and makes it sound better than me playing my $600 violin*
Me: "Nice."
Rob: "This sounds like garbage."
Me: *tear rolls down face* "Nice."
Would be kind of awesome to have an entire orchestra of each musician with the cheapest version of each respected instrument. See how it would sound in the hands of professionals.
I listened to an expert pianist in sweeden play a piano that had all of the hammers exchanged with actual hammers. She did very well.
I fear, even the Portsmouth Sinfonia would have politely refused to play on them...

On the topic of cheap instruments.....
Back in the early 90s I was a poor college student and I ended up selling my old clarinet to a music store for $100. I later noticed pawn shops were selling the same clarinets for $70 to $80. I bought a few from pawn shops, sold them to music stores and made a few dollars.
The next year I noticed, in early summer, right after school let out, the pawn shops had various instruments for really cheap. The students that were giving up were pawning their instruments so the pawn shops had a bunch and were selling those instruments for cheap.
I bought as many as I could afford. I then waited until fall, when all the students were starting to go back to school. Buy when demand was low, sell when demand was high.
I then made the rounds to the music stores and sold said instruments. lol I wasn't making a fortune but I was buying 8 or 10 instruments for $60 +/- then waiting 3 months and selling them for $120 +/-. lol Back in the 90s, an extra $500 or $600 was a big deal to a poor college student. Anyways, that was one of my hustles to keep my rent paid and food in my belly while I was in school.
I’d love to hear you play it like a fiddle

Same haha I have a hundred dollars so I will go for the pink lol I am broke as hell yeah also thx rob
You can try looking for a ugood sed violin that may fit your budget. Maybe a good violin teacher can help you as students or former students may sell their instruments.
My parents got me a violin from wish and I did not have the heart to tell them it was trash so I just used the I don't want to spend all day tuning it excuse and ended up renting one from school...
Wise choice. Simpletons who disregard their children's education like that would never take constructive criticism anyway.
My dad got me one from Amazon when I was just starting. My violin teacher had to tell him the hard way it was bad enough to be a piece of a wall decoration
@@that1liza871 wait really My got mine from there too we’re returning it bc of the size does that mean that it’s not gonna be a good one ?
Even seeing cheap violens destroyed still makes me feel like god going to strike us down for such a sin
To be fair they make sounds and kids or very poor people would still be happy to have one of those
I honestly felt offended. Maybe it's just me, but I find this to be incredibly disrespectful to the instrument in general.
I know that It's his money and that he can do whatever he wants but I cant help but feel sad about it :/
Destroying any sort of violin brings me much pain.
The durability test looked a bit VIOLINt....
@@abhaychandra2624 Captain here: Violent sounds like Violin with a "T" at the end. And his joke was a playful way to write violin whilst meaning violent.
Captain out.
I got my violin for about $25 at a garage sale. Came with case, bow, 2 shoulder rests, rosin, and I love it. I did replace the bow, as the adjustment peg was gone, but I’ve had the violin for a couple years, dropped it a couple times, and it’s still looking and sounding beautiful. I think it’s sad that you spent twice what I spent and you got a piece of trash.
NOOOOOOO THE INTRO HURTS ME ALREADY HAHA

I think it’s funny how he demonstrated situations where your instrument could get damaged but he’s not considered most of us violinists would rather break ourselves than let our instruments get even the smallest dent
Good thing you did the blind test, the pink violin got to live another day. It's fate remains undecided.
Even though these are from wish, the durability tests hurt me on a physical level-
Ok the durability test is for violins made of vibranium, not wood
Even though it was so cheap, the violin being crushed under a truck tire was straight up instrument gore for me
My violin is about 119 years old
I got it from my music school and it sound SO good
my teacher is always telling me that I can have a new one bc that one Is so old but when I try the new ones it sounds like ✨trash✨
(well, it sounds 1000000000 times worse then mine)
but then he asks me to give it to someone to fix the look but I like it more when its older :^
so I just say
"wait untill I finish my violin classes and then let someone fix it" :P

I've always wanted to play the violin since I was a little kid. But I could never buy one, not even a cheap one for $ 40. That made me sad now to see how you destroyed them. Found your channel a few days ago and watched a few videos. I love how you surprise people. I am happy to see the facial expressions on the people you surprise. I think it's a great idea to make such videos.
But I don't like looking at the destruction of violins, even if they are cheap.
I love music. Music opens my heart in this world where you have to close it far too often. In my opinion, even a cheap instrument is better than none. Sorry, English is not my main language and I hope you understand me correctly, but I think even a hollow tree trunk is a better drum than none. But otherwise I like your content very much.
So, and now I'll watch a few more videos of you and leave a subscription. ^^
Have a nice day.
I bought a $35 one off of eBay, and it not sounding so great has not put me off of learning to play, at all, because I know it is because of the violin. As I learn and improve, the violin's sound changes and improves enough that I can easily tell I'm making progress.
As a violin teacher, all I can say is THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
Even the most expensive violins won't survive these crash tests ..
I dropped an expensive instrument once, but then it started floating, until it flew away to Cremona…
Good violin, Bad birdie.
Just kidding, never would drop my instrument, or any instrument for that matter
My sister played violin as a kid. She got a decent rental from the shop. Dropped it on stage before a kiddy performance and broke the bridge XD
Rob is a man of culture: Playing Dragonborn(Dovahkiin) on a violin test. Big Up!
I am now worried about the violin I ordered on amazon.
Yea sorry to say, but Amazon violins are usually not that great, because first off you’ll have to put the strings in yourself, and most of the time the material is very cheap and the varnish is fake but hopefully it’s an ok violin.
Order through a luthier or violin shop where they play. You will quit trying with the crappy stuff. Worth the wait in saving.
@@vishalsubramanian2051 It might be good for a practice one though, so I can get used to it.
@@TheDoomedRobin you cant practice what you can't play. On a decent violin managed a decent open note tone first try. Won't happen on a crappy one.
This is crazy to see, since I got my violin from Shar Music in Michigan where they set these up! Some years back I lived in Michigan and used to drive by them regularly. I had always wanted one, so I finally stopped in and got one on impulse. Literally on my lunch break. They did a great job selling me one even on short notice, and played several for me to find the one I liked the sound of best. This last year, I finally picked it up and really started to try to learn it. It's been a real joy and the satisfaction of making progress with it has been great. I've just started to be able to play things like the 1st mvmt of Summer from Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Or the Mario Bros. theme at proper speed. :P I feel like I have so much room to grow with the instrument. I'm so glad after seeing this that I went there instead of ordering a cheap one online.
I don’t even play the violin but I screamed because of how expensive violins are and he just RUNS IT OVER!!!!
Okay now I can safely say, Rob Landes tortures violins more than Davie504
Woah...This video is pretty VIOLent😮
Thanks I also really want you to make how to play violin for beginners video since your super good!
man, I watch you destroy several violins it gives me a squeeze in my heart, instead of destroying why not give me
Everyone: durability test
Me: the white violin with no bow
Crazy, I bought my student Violin for about £150. It's not a great violin but it makes a decent sound and plays pretty well.
No sense in it being so poorly made, student violins are cheap af but they work.
The white one is a decoration piece, that's for sure 😂
Rob breaking the violins makes me realize that when I was freshman in college, I used to put two thick books in side of my Bam hard case with no pocket.,, it was Bach and Carl Flesch scale books.. I just wanted to carry only my violin with books inside of the case. As time goes by,,, those books pressed the my violin's bridge , finally my violin got a crack under the bridge. I was stupid.... my mom helped me to pay for repair... (it was about $3000)......
I love Rob and his videos
In 1969 I was 13 and started taking guitar lessons. I had a 3/4th size acoustic guitar. My first electric was a Supro. I thought it was awful but looking back it was just not set up correctly and the strings were too high making it very hard on my fingers. Fortunately I stayed with it and eventually traded it for a used 1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom. That felt like going from the white violin to probably a $3000 violin.
Wow. I thought the white one sounded okay when you played on it. I bet you sound better on all these than I would on a stradivarius. (I played a viola in middle school...but they had to restring a violin to fit the size for me. I bet you can imagine how lovely that sounded...)
Bro... You just don't destroy violins, even if they are cheap as hell.... We are musicians... We cherish the instruments....
I live in Europe and after much research I bought a Stentor II violin, I never felt so glad of my decision as I do now after watching your video!
Do that durability test with your Stradivarious! LOL
I love the looks and the style of these violins. But I'm always against buying an instrument only because it's cheap. That's why I think it's better to rent a musical instrument instead of buying a cheap one. This is what I usually recommend to my store visitors.
Pink one could be for Kirby music!
@2:09 - This helps me really visualize the whole "color correction" thing. That does NOT look pink till you hang it on the wall.
Hey! 0:10 I like the pink violin. Also, I'm pretty sure you'll crush any instrument if you run it over with a vehicle.
Love the shout-out to Mark Rober, Rob! You tell him.
When I started playing the viola, my mom once made the mistake of ordering a cheap beginner’s one online. The D string immediately broke as I started to tune, the pegs kept unwinding after being turned and it was so glossy the bridge quickly fell. We exchanged it for a store-bought one, which I have been playing without issue ever since.
Yep this happened yo me. Parents bought $80 violin.. I struggled and suffered ( my fingers would go red from the strings) on it for 5 years and was really giving up.. until my teacher let me play her violin one day. It felt and sounded amazing. She realised I had lost my passion and made me realise it was not my ability but rather my instrument. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to upgrade at the time and stopped playing soon after leaving school.
Aw. You should try again and try to rediscover your passion. My violin was really cheap and it sounds like a tin can, but I enjoy learning and I can't wait to be able to play my favorite songs. I hope you pick it up again, or go with another instrument.
a good musician doesnt blame a crappy instrument. he/she either figures out if they can fix it up, and if not, gets a better one.

Best part smashing the crappy fiddle shaped objects
I previously has a $450 violin that I brought 8 years ago, save up for 3 years to buy it and loved it so much.
but I don't practice much because I am too scare to hurt the peg the string the bridge while I tune the sound, i only use the violin when I meet my teacher, then 4 years ago I stopped, now can't even play ode of joy.
Last month when I looked at the $450 loved dusted violin, knowing the love change to fear, and now it just remains with guilt, burden, and shame (I know , it sounds how you would see your ex) so I decide to give it away and start over.
The pinky violin is the exact violin I ordered yesterday, it costs $50 USD. I think it will be a good start as a beginner again because I don't have to have the stress of "have best tool but suck at skill"
12:02-12:37 is inspired to me because, if you practice enough and your skill is good, even cheaper violin sound so good to basic audience. So the human who practice or not is a bigger factor than the quality of the violin.
Side note:
- I am from asian family with expectations stress
- $450 in US = $2000 for my perspective because of country currency conversion.
- now am an adult instead of a teenager, so saving up to buy something like this doesn't take 3 years anymore.
Wish me luck on my new journey of learning-to-play-violin-again adventure!
Could you do a quick vid on how to set up a bridge? My bridge on my cello fell down and I'm not confident in exactly where to put it...? Thanks!
What if you buy a cheap violin, replace the strings and the bridge, what will it sound like.
It would sound much better. The strings manufacturers put there are the worst thing about the cheap violin. Sometimes the bridge sucks as well. More quality strings can make a difference. Cheap violin with better strings can be good option for a beginner or kid. Here, somebody will say: "No, it sounds bad, this will make the beginner quit." But honestly, every violin sounds bad in hands of beginner. No difference if they play cheap violin with replaced strings or a violin that costs a million.
"So, it's a little bit thicker making it feel good on the hand"
