I don't understand how it started with crabs and ended with pillars and ladders. Please don't get me wrong i have been a Carcar far ever since. Could someone please explain?
It was just said to me that the theme of Carcar's ritual dance is "Lifting each other". The crabs on the first segments signifies the "crab mentality" followed by the segment where they are vying for something (sa katong part na nga gibali ang image ni santo niño) in which gi incorporate nila ang tune nga "hakub hakub hakub". Sa last segment, is the part where makita nato nga nisaka sila sa ladder in which it resembles "lifting each other" where makita pod sa lower led ang statement or message.
@lesnayre24 i really see no connection. It was really confusing and i got lost in the end and thought medyo bitin. But then i guess they won the performance and musicality was really great. Thanks for the clarification Pit Senyor!
We may take Carcar's concept as a sermon or if you allow me, a parable. The crabs scene was used to visually compare people's mindset to that of crabs: magbinirahay. Carcar City's performance tells us that instead we exist like crabs "that keep pulling down each other", we should seek divinity and help exalt one another. The people in chaos for wealth and power and the lifted ladders with individuals climbing are a direct juxtaposition and self explanatory. Carcar offers us a solution, which is the latter. I would like to emphasize, too, that the costume colors they used for the chaos scene are crucial to their concept. The following is my own interpretation of those colors, based on the liturgical and connotative meaning they are associated with: Purple (the festival queen): this color is used to signify sadness. In liturgical rights, this color signify penance and sacrifice. Here, based on the actions of the festival queen and the color of the dress, it may mean the realization that earthly wealth will never make one truly happy. Thus, it can be interpreted that she was in despair looking for the real wealth, and that is faith in God. White: the color of purity but here, the color of the pretentious ones. We see and know some people pretending to be noble and pure but deep within them, they are corrupt and evil in disguise. They hunger for fame, power, and are always insecure. They desire influence while covering in deception. They will do everything to get what they want, whatever the means possible without being exposed. Green: the malicious-minded. They tend to scrutinize other people's lives, make false interpretations, and spread malice about them. Oftentimes, they compare themselves to those who are doing better than them. They are the ones hoping for one's failure and demise in thoughts and words, but would shy away once confronted. Notice that the people in white directly went to the wealth behind the festival queen. No one stopped to ask or comfort her. This happens in real life. Sometimes those we think pure and good are just waiting for us to fall. The colors during the costume change could be interpreted as: Pink (festival queen): in the liturgy, especially in Lent season, this color means happiness. Faith in God gives a person ultimate happiness and contentment Gold (festival queen): the color symbolizing wealth and success. In this context, it can be interpreted that a person eventually finds the real wealth that would never be traded for anything at once. The costume change of female dancers signify the change of mindset and heart they found when they chose to repent for their wrongdoings and decided to be faithful to God or in this context, the Nino. If I may suggest, please look closely to the part when the Ninos were pulled out from the cabinets because it is an important transition in their concept. The boys came back to the center stage bringing scepters. Scepters are a symbol of power. It tells us that we have the power to do what is necessary. That we are responsible in using this power for the good, not just for ourselves, but for everyone. Hence, "Ang Bugtong Gahom" (The One True Power). Philippians 2:3-4

Seeing them holding the ladder while an ordinary person was climbing to the top was an indication of humility. Thus, the message: WE RISE BY LIFTING OTHERS. The ladder was just a symbol of someone's journey towards the top. And instead of pulling them down, they learned to just support them or even push them forward. This is the only dance who first came to my feed, so I have no biases against this team. There's a disconnect between THE ONE TRUE POWER and the dance. I didn't see any interpretation of the word power there. If they had dancers who are cancer survivors, premature babies who survived ICU, near-death patients who came back to life, etc. then that would be aligned with their theme "THE ONE TRUE POWER". Tapos may alimango, tapos may greek pillars, tapos may earthquake and volcano eruption, tapos may metal na parang alimango sa screen, tapos may mga Spaniards. Ang gulo-gulo ng performance, sumakit ulo ko trying to understand what the heck I'm watching. If a judge doesn't know anything about Carcar or sinulog, this performance wouldn't win.
Maybe because at the onset you did not understand the message itself! You think too negatively that you missed out some core values in their dance interpretation.... then this message goes out to you...We rise by lifting others!

The way they interpreted the story was to relate it to how the people fight for power to get to the top and ended with a strong message of “we rise by lifting others”. Syempre they relate na din the theme to Sinulog (fyi the religion was introduced to Cebu by Magellan together with the Spanish missionaries hence merong Spaniards). Basa basa din kasi. Memasabi ka lang eh. Kalurks.
I understand that you didn't get the message and the storyline. But the panel of judges was composed of 10-12 artists and creatives on the field of performing arts from luzon to mindanao. So with that, I think the message and concept they executed was conveyed.
