Thanks for sharing Carl! I still remember when i hid some to dry up some fresh leaves from my grandpa only to find out it was really the medicinal one and not the potent kind that makes you want to look for food and eyes twinkle a bit😂

I have used seam ripper, too. Hot tip: if you use it with the red ball side down, there's less risk of accidentally poking a hole in the fabric with the sharp pointed part.
Thank you and you are welcome. For me, the purpose of stitching was to get great detail in a design that I could not figure out how to fold.... although I did figure how to fold the leaf, I just did not always have good results with it, but stitching gave me beautiful leaves every time ✌🏻 as well as so many other designs, check out this photo on my FB : facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10213737434330413&set=a.3602366818132
yes they are... I have bought them from Michael's before, but these are the ones I am currently using ..... smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000X06LQE/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ...... the only other thing I have found that does not wash out in the SA soak is a dry erase crayon , but you have to keep sharpening them if you want a fine line, so I just use the pencil..... also I work on the inside of the tee as the pencil does not always wash all the way out.... most times it is covered by the black dye, but not always
when I need to make a stencil, I search for free clip art and then pick an image I like and trace it out .... my leaf is on cardboard, but my new stencils are made from Cutting Mats I found at the Dollar Store, they are see through so I can call an image up on my computer and then put the cutting may of the screen and trace the image ... here is a link to my stencil video where I show the packs I use : ua-cam.com/video/dgBKDwFu3uI/v-deo.html
I attempted to do a sailboat stitched tie dye and failed miserably. The picture was just a big, multicolor blob without any distinct lines where I stitched. Any advice?
what I found works for me is to do two tees at a time, so when the stitched lines are gathered by pulling the threads, there is more fabric to be gathered.... when I did single tees, there was not enough fabric to gather and have it lay flat so I could see my lines to dye .... also, my preference was not to pull the thread completely tight, but instead pull them enough to gather the pattern, but still lay mostly flat ..... here is an old album but it has many photos of my stitching process : facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.4697029064004&type=3
here is how I make Thick Water and then Thick Dyes : ua-cam.com/video/imaTXWdNJTo/v-deo.html I mix up the thick water first.... I start with just HOT water and the Sodium Alginate... and just keep blending until it is completely dissolved, I test it by rubbing some between my fingers ... it should feel completely smooth... if you feel lumps, then you need more blending as these lumps will clog the nozzle of the dye bottles ... once it is smooth, then I add the Salt and the Urea and blend until they are dissolved... then I let it cool completely as it will thicken more as it cools (you can put in the fridge if you are in a hurry) >>>> so once it is cool then I test the thickness by putting some in a small bottle and applying a line to white paper towel... I like to see it soak in, but not spread too much... if it lays on top of the paper towel it is too thick, so I add some plan water and blend, then test again... once I have the consistency I want, then I will add the dye powder.... so if I am making a lot of one color, like I do for black, I will put some thick water in a mixing cup and then add dye powder and blend it up .... BUT, if I just want small amounts or several colors, then I use a painter pallet and add some thick water to the sections and then add some dye powder and stir it up and then you are ready to paint .... so previously I have a white tee that I spray the area I am going to paint with soda ash and let it dry completely, I make sure to have something inside the tee so the dye does not go to the back of the tee.... most time I will use butchers paper and just iron a piece into the center of the tee(the back side of where I will be painting) once the tee is dry, then I paint it and then if possible, I will put in a tub with a lid to keep it damp for longer, or I will lay it flat and cover with a piece of plastic sheeting........ the Urea helps to keep the dyes wet for longer during the batching I tried painting on a slightly damp tee once and the edges of where I paint got all fuzzy looking instead of a nice line... so I alway paint on a dry tee Here is a video where I mixed up just a few colors in a pallet : ua-cam.com/video/-Vhk_2Y80aE/v-deo.html I tie dyed this tee and left a white space to be painted, I cued the video up to the point of painting it ... I hope this helps ... have fun and I wish you success!!
I make the thick water first and let it cool as it will thicken more as it cools... once it is cool and I test the consistency ... then I mix in black dye powder :ua-cam.com/video/imaTXWdNJTo/v-deo.html
Carl can you tell me what bottles/tips your using here...? I can NOT find any that are “precision “ enough. I did get the bottles from amazon you recommended ( needle type tips with dif color caps) but they still squirt out to fast😞 Do you thicken your dye or...? Thanks Love you brother
in this video, I am using a gutta bottle from dharma with a sz 7 tip on it : www.dharmatrading.com/tools/gutta-applicator-bottles-with-metal-tips.html which is about the same as the bottles from Amazon, but on this design, I am using thickened dye to do the outline so it comes out much slower, but it does not penetrate as well, so you will see me pressing the thick black dye in with my cuticle pusher sometimes
yes it is... I have folded this design in various ways, but I did not always get results that I liked and once I started stitching, I did not perfect those other methods.... but here is a video on another channel that tells the basics of folding the leaf and tying it that shows a similar method that I tried for a while : ua-cam.com/video/ajihJ0vSNgQ/v-deo.html
in this video, I use Sodium Alginate to thicken the water and I added Salt as it can help push the dye into the fabric, and Urea to help keep it damp so the dyes have more time to bond if you are doing dye painting ... here is a video of how I mix it up and how much of each : ua-cam.com/video/imaTXWdNJTo/v-deo.html once I get the thick water made, I test it to make sure it is smooth... any lumps can clog the nozzle, so keep blending.... then I let it cool completely as it will thicken some more... if you are in a hurry, you can put it in the fridge to speed the cooling.... then I test the thickness by putting some in a small bottle and squeezing some onto white paper towel, I like to see it soak in and spread slightly.... if it lays on top of the paper towel, then it is too thick and I will add some plain water and blend some more... once I get the thickness I want, then I will use some of the thick water to make thick dye
I bought a few $2 tank shirts at Walmart to practice on, and they look dull once I rinse them and they dry. What can I do so that it can keep the vibrant color??
first. what kind of dyes are you using? are the tanks 100% cotton? did you pre-wash them?? sometimes manufacturers will treat their clothes with stain resist which also resist dye ..... how long did you let the dye set up before washing them? 24 hours in my minimum time, but I go 48 hours when time allows, it just lets the dye set up better
I'm a newish tie dryer. I tried to find a photo of the leaf to print but I can't find one that I can get big enough. Where did you find yours? Love how you made this.
I search for Free Clip Art and then put in what I am looking for ... here is a quick search I did : clipart-library.com/search1/?q=pot%20leaf#gsc.tab=1&gsc.q=pot%20leaf&gsc.page=1 back in the day, I used a projector and traced my images onto thin cardboard (I used cereal boxes back then) ...... now I use plastic cutting matts ... I buy them from the Dollar Store, they come in packs of 2 and measure 11 X 14 inches so they are a nice size for images, and they are see through, so now I call an image up on my computer screen and can then lay the cutting Matt on the screen and trace it, then cut it out and create!! ... here is a video on making stencils that shows the matts I use : ua-cam.com/video/dgBKDwFu3uI/v-deo.html
I apologize, but I am no longer doing custom orders .... BUT, I do have a couple small leaf tees and one 4X leaf in my store... so if you are lucky, here is a link to them : mrtiedye.myshopify.com/search?type=product&q=leaf ..... one of them is a leaf tee I made in this video ✌🏻🌈💚
Here is a link to the bottles I am using in this video, they come with the tiny tip ..... www.dharmatrading.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?query=metal+tip+bottles But more recently, I found 4oz bottles with tiny tips on Amazon, here they are .... smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DB6K3XZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 the other thing I use to press the thick dye in a little bit is called a cuticle pusher and you can find that in the nail polish isle at the store ... I like it because it has a smooth edge that will not cut into the tee shirt
@@MrTieDye thank you so much..i know you mentioned it and i couldnt remember which video...i keep missing the live...its wed...but then i remembered it is thursday..haha..I am in Lebanon oregon..less than a year..
it is just on the front ... but it can be done on the front and the back by folding the tee in half .... here is my video on centering a tee ..... ua-cam.com/video/ayXftSPBITo/v-deo.html
@@MrTieDye thank you i will watch that because i would like to make couple shirts like this to sell and i only wanted it on the front. so thanks again also im wondering what do i need to buy to mix the dyes? do you have a video on that?
@@dasandowsey5295 you are welcome and you can mix the dyes with just warm water here is a video on how I do it .... ua-cam.com/video/3Fj289T6BVg/v-deo.html .... and then you will also need soda ash for these dyes .... ua-cam.com/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/v-deo.html have fun!!
yes you can..... just do one tee.... pull the front forward like in the centering a tee video says...... then figure where you want the leaves to be and draw your center line there and then fold in half there and draw your leaf on, it will have to be smaller of course ..... then stitch .... I can do a video if that is easier
I use sodium alginate to thicken my dyes, here is a video on my process ...... ua-cam.com/video/imaTXWdNJTo/v-deo.html ..... And thank you, I also put a link in the description of this video
I have done just a couple stitched letters on tees, I just drew them on and stitched them up similar to the leaf.... I stitched through the whole tee so the letters were on the front and back (although they were backwards on the back of the tee) ... but it was kind of difficult since they had to be so small to fit on the tee, the detail was hard to keep... so now I use thickened dye to paint letters on ....... ua-cam.com/video/-Vhk_2Y80aE/v-deo.html
Thank you for your tutorials they are FABULOUS!! Can you oriduce a video for a long sleeve "Hyper V"? And A long sleeve "DNA Spider" Thank you. BTW Due to your great info I have jumped into Tie Dye using all the professional supplies. Magnificent difference in sharp color.
Thank you and yes, I answered your question on the Rasta Spider V tee question... I will be creating two videos to show both methods I would use and then you can do either method on either design ;-)
Can you tell me which color greens you are using so I can order from dharma. I want to do a pine tree and these look just perfect. There are so many greens to choose from. Thank you so much. I really appreciate your videos.
I use a lime green that I mix myself .... for 16 oz of water, I use 3 tsp of lemon yellow powder and 1 tsp of turq powder ( you can vary this to get just the shade you like) and then I use Emerald Green (from dharma) over the top ..... and I plan to do a video soon on the mixing of colors to get different shades and I plan to do another on just the dye application I do to get some of the movement and depth so stay tuned ..... but that should get you started for the greens
I do not ... I just search for 'Free Clip Art' online and then put in whatever I want.... for example "free clip art pot leaf" and then pick my favorite image and then sometimes I will trace it out and adjust to my liking and then make a plastic copy of it so I can repeat next time.... I cut mine out of Cutting Mats from the Dollar Store : ua-cam.com/video/dgBKDwFu3uI/v-deo.html
yes it will ... I did a leaf and peace hand on a 58x 90 inch tapestry a while back, you can see a photo of it on my store tapestry listing here : mrtiedye.myshopify.com/collections/tapestries?page=2
the green has a tiny bit of thickener in it just to slow the spread, but I have also used regular dye for the green ... but yes the black is very thick so it does not spread much at all... but I use my cuticle pusher to 'press' the black day down into the fold so I get a solid line, otherwise the black dye would sit at the top of the fold and cause just a dotted line.
I let me items batch for 24-48 hours, so at the point of rinsing the dye are set up good and you are just getting the excess dyes out.... this is the reason to rinse in cold water before you un band or cut ties.... cold water will rinse away the soda ash .... then move up to warm and hot water for your rinse and remove the bands ... then 3 hot washes with the last two being the long soak washes
MrTieDye thank you so much for the information 😊 and your knowledge! I will have to save up to get the dyes you have for sure! You get such great results with them!
Thank you and yes I have, I stitched it, similar to how I did this leaf tee.... I folded it in half and drew half of the batman on and then stitched it .... you can do it!! ✌🏻🙏💚🌈🤗
yes I would stitch it... I did a couple Pineapple Upside Down Tie-Dye Tees recently .... I folded in half and drew half of the pineapple on and then stitched it up ..... here is a photo over on my FB .... facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10218384420982175&set=a.10218384420142154&type=3&theater
I have an online store stocked full of my tie-dye tees, tapestries, and dresses .... you can find them all here .... www.mrtiedye.com ...... and you can use the Catalog tab at the top to search by size
If I send you ASAE would you send me some copies of this leaf pattern and your turtle pattern? And is there different size patterns depending on the shirt size?
they were both free clip art that I found online and then traced them to make a template to work from ..... and yes for the leaf I have 3 sizes that I use... 1 for small/Med .... 1 for Lg/XL and 1 for 3-5X ...... the turtle is one that I use the same one for sizes up to 2X .... if I were to make one larger, I would make a bigger template
I bought the little bottles from dharma ...... www.dharmatrading.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?query=metal+tip+bottles ........... and here is how I make my thick black dye ...... ua-cam.com/video/imaTXWdNJTo/v-deo.html ..... although sometimes I have to adjust it just a bit so it flows how I want it, just make sure it is blended very well as the sodium alginate likes to plug the nozzle on those little bottles
for me, I do a lot of my stitching in the evening while watching a show and the soda ash in the tee will leave a bit of a powdery residue on my hands and lap and where ever else I put it, so part is just about staying clean...... also I found the needle goes through the fabric better for me
I buy mine from dharma, but there are other sources ..... here are the dyes I use ... www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html?lnav=dyes.html .... and they carry the soda ash also, just do a search ...... there are other suppliers of dye, I buy here because I live in Oregon so the shipping is fast and not to expensive .... for the dyes, the main thing to look for if you search for other suppliers is the Procion fiber reactive dyes ..... and for the soda ash or sodium carbonate, some people find it at pool supply stores ..... what is does for tie-dye is raise the pH level of the cotton fibers to 10.6-11.0 pH and this causes a reaction with the dye and cotton fibers ... hope this helps
MrTieDye - Thank YOU‼️ . . . Yes it helped me GREATLY!! . . . I am just starting out with tie dye and your videos have been the most thorough, I have seen. Thanks again 💜🕉💜
I use Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes. I buy most of mine from Dharma Trading Co. www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html I have also purchased the same kind of dyes from Custom Colours in NC and Grateful Dye in CO. Here is a video on how to mix the dyes: ua-cam.com/video/3Fj289T6BVg/v-deo.html
I made three templates for my leaf so I could do a different size for small-med, lg-xl and 2X-5X tees ..... so the Lg-XL template is about 15 inches tall and it is almost 8.5 inches wide (it is just half a leaf, so the total width of the leaf when done is about 17 inches) .... I try to make mine so they cover the chest, but do not extend past the seams on the sleeves .... I search for free clip art and picked an image I liked and then made my stencil..... I hope this helps... have fun creating. 😉✌🏻🙏❤️
the ones I use in this video I bought from dharma .... www.dharmatrading.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?query=metal+tip+bottles but recently I found these 4 oz bottles with tiny tips on Amazon so they are the main ones I use now ...... smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DB6K3XZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have a few questions. In the beginning of the video you said you do two shirts at a time when doing stitch designs. This might be a dumb question but since I didn't see the reveal for both of the shirts separately, did you keep one shirt inside of the other throughout the whole process? If they are layered, do the colors for both of the shirts come out equally as dark/vibrant (in other words does the design look close to identical for both)? Lastly, does stitching different sized shirts at the same time affect the alignment of the design at all? Thank you in advance!
yeah I realized later on I should have given more detail on how I put the two shirts together. Here is a video where I do show that process of centering the tees and putting one inside of the other and lining up the center line for both, this insures that the design will be in the middle of both of the tees. ua-cam.com/video/rE8aosvDAo4/v-deo.html and once I put them together, they stay that way until after they have batched, I do one wash on them on gentle cycle in a net bag, and then I remove the stitches and separate them, and yes I should have shown both tees at the end ... this is the closest way to getting two tees to be almost exactly the same, now and then the dye color may be a little bit off on the two tees, (the inside tee may be a bit lighter if I did not saturate well enough) but most of the time I have a hard time telling which tee is which ... I wish you success in your tie-dye adventure!! let me know if you have further questions
I would use the Stitch technique in the same way for a Stealie ... I just stitch all of the outlines first so I can then draw the outlines on the back side, this is helpful to have lines on both sides when it comes to putting the dyes on ... Anyways, I am not sure if my hands up up for another stitch project right now, maybe down the road a bit I may reconsider doing another video on stitching, but here is an old album on FB where I took photos of several stitch projects while I was working on them, so it will give some more detail info : facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.4697029064004&type=3

Mashaallah very very fantastic I like it so much
thank you
Question. The stitches you run on the outside of the stem, is that just an extra set purely to have a second thread to tie to?
yes it is ✌🏻
I have looked for the artist pencil. Is it graphite? What else can I use that won’t wash out with SA SOAK?
yes they are...
Wow congratulations brother
thank you
How do you thicken your dye?
Where can I get thr pot leaf pattern?
when I need to make a stencil, I search for free clip art and then pick an image I like and trace it out .... my leaf is on cardboard, but my new stencils are made from Cutting Mats I found at the Dollar Store, they are see through so I can call an image up on my computer and then put the cutting may of the screen and trace the image ...
here is a link to my stencil video where I show the packs I use : ua-cam.com/video/dgBKDwFu3uI/v-deo.html
I wish you success on your next project

So Cool!!
How do you thicken your dye
here is how I make Thick Water and then Thick Dyes : ua-cam.com/video/imaTXWdNJTo/v-deo.html
I mix up the thick water first....
BUT, if I just want small amounts or several colors, then I use a painter pallet and add some thick water to the sections and then add some dye powder and stir it up and then you are ready to paint .... so previously I have a white tee that I spray the area I am going to paint with soda ash and let it dry completely, I make sure to have something inside the tee so the dye does not go to the back of the tee.... most time I will use butchers paper and just iron a piece into the center of the tee(the back side of where I will be painting) once the tee is dry, then I paint it and then if possible, I will put in a tub with a lid to keep it damp for longer, or I will lay it flat and cover with a piece of plastic sheeting........ the Urea helps to keep the dyes wet for longer during the batching
I tried painting on a slightly damp tee once and the edges of where I paint got all fuzzy looking instead of a nice line... so I alway paint on a dry tee
Here is a video where I mixed up just a few colors in a pallet : ua-cam.com/video/-Vhk_2Y80aE/v-deo.html
I tie dyed this tee and left a white space to be painted, I cued the video up to the point of painting it ... I hope this helps ... have fun and I wish you success!!

Carl can you tell me what bottles/tips your using here...?
I can NOT find any that are “precision “ enough. I did get the bottles from amazon you recommended ( needle type tips with dif color caps) but they still squirt out to fast😞
Do you thicken your dye or...?
Thanks
Love you brother
in this video, I am using a gutta bottle from dharma with a sz 7 tip on it : www.dharmatrading.com/tools/gutta-applicator-bottles-with-metal-tips.html
which is about the same as the bottles from Amazon, but on this design, I am using thickened dye to do the outline so it comes out much slower, but it does not penetrate as well, so you will see me pressing the thick black dye in with my cuticle pusher sometimes
@@MrTieDye thank you❤️
Is it possible to do it without stitching?
yes it is...
How do you thicken your dye? Or do buy it thick already?
in this video, I use Sodium Alginate to thicken the water and I added Salt as it can help push the dye into the fabric, and Urea to help keep it damp so the dyes have more time to bond if you are doing dye painting ... here is a video of how I mix it up and how much of each : ua-cam.com/video/imaTXWdNJTo/v-deo.html
once I get the thick water made, I test it to make sure it is smooth... any lumps can clog the nozzle, so keep blending.... then I let it cool completely as it will thicken some more... if you are in a hurry, you can put it in the fridge to speed the cooling.... then I test the thickness by putting some in a small bottle and squeezing some onto white paper towel, I like to see it soak in and spread slightly.... if it lays on top of the paper towel, then it is too thick and I will add some plain water and blend some more... once I get the thickness I want, then I will use some of the thick water to make thick dye
Thanks. I'm looking to make comets with tails and thought stitching would be the way to go :-)
I bought a few $2 tank shirts at Walmart to practice on, and they look dull once I rinse them and they dry.
MrTieDye - Nope I did not prewash, nor did I let them sit for 24+ hours.
Thanks for your knowledge.
Love this!!!
thanks

back in the day, I used a projector and traced my images onto thin cardboard (I used cereal boxes back then) ...... now I use plastic cutting matts ...

How can I tie-dye letters using the stitching method? I want to make a tie-dye shirt for my college, and the letters are LMU. How would I do that?
I have done just a couple stitched letters on tees, I just drew them on and stitched them up similar to the leaf.... I stitched through the whole tee so the letters were on the front and back (although they were backwards on the back of the tee) ... but it was kind of difficult since they had to be so small to fit on the tee, the detail was hard to keep... so now I use thickened dye to paint letters on ....... ua-cam.com/video/-Vhk_2Y80aE/v-deo.html

yes it will ... I did a leaf and peace hand on a 58x 90 inch tapestry a while back, you can see a photo of it on my store tapestry listing here : mrtiedye.myshopify.com/collections/tapestries?page=2
Do you thicken the green too? Or just the black?
the green has a tiny bit of thickener in it just to slow the spread, but I have also used regular dye for the green ...
but yes the black is very thick so it does not spread much at all... but I use my cuticle pusher to 'press' the black day down into the fold so I get a solid line, otherwise the black dye would sit at the top of the fold and cause just a dotted line.
@MrTieDye yes I have noticed the dye not soaking in as fast when it's thick. I'm still learning. Thank you for the advice, much appreciated.
How do you keep the dyes from blending when you rinse and squeeze them?
I let me items batch for 24-48 hours, so at the point of rinsing the dye are set up good and you are just getting the excess dyes out.... this is the reason to rinse in cold water before you un band or cut ties.... cold water will rinse away the soda ash .... then move up to warm and hot water for your rinse and remove the bands ... then 3 hot washes with the last two being the long soak washes
MrTieDye thank you so much for the information 😊 and your knowledge! I will have to save up to get the dyes you have for sure! You get such great results with them!

I use fiber reactive dyes and I buy mine from dharma ...... www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html?lnav=dyes.html
Do you do custom work?

What do you use to thicken your dyes?
If I send you ASAE would you send me some copies of this leaf pattern and your turtle pattern? And is there different size patterns depending on the shirt size?
they were both free clip art that I found online and then traced them to make a template to work from ..... and yes for the leaf I have 3 sizes that I use... 1 for small/Med .... 1 for Lg/XL and 1 for 3-5X ...... the turtle is one that I use the same one for sizes up to 2X .... if I were to make one larger, I would make a bigger template
Where did you get the all bottles at? Also what's your ratio for thickening the dye?
I bought the little bottles from dharma ...... www.dharmatrading.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?query=metal+tip+bottles ........... and here is how I make my thick black dye ...... ua-cam.com/video/imaTXWdNJTo/v-deo.html ..... although sometimes I have to adjust it just a bit so it flows how I want it, just make sure it is blended very well as the sodium alginate likes to plug the nozzle on those little bottles
Why stitch before the SA?
for me, I do a lot of my stitching in the evening while watching a show and the soda ash in the tee will leave a bit of a powdery residue on my hands and lap and where ever else I put it, so part is just about staying clean...... also I found the needle goes through the fabric better for me
Fantastic!
thank you
Where do you buy Soda Ash and those powder dyes you use?
Thank you for the videos, you are a true professional in your craft.

BOMB!
Here is a video where I do show that process of centering the tees and putting one inside of the other and lining up the center line for both, this insures that the design will be in the middle of both of the tees. ua-cam.com/video/rE8aosvDAo4/v-deo.html
and once I put them together, they stay that way until after they have batched, I do one wash on them on gentle cycle in a net bag, and then I remove the stitches and separate them, and yes I should have shown both tees at the end ... this is the closest way to getting two tees to be almost exactly the same, now and then the dye color may be a little bit off on the two tees, (the inside tee may be a bit lighter if I did not saturate well enough) but most of the time I have a hard time telling which tee is which ... I wish you success in your tie-dye adventure!! let me know if you have further questions
