Wow. Just wow. Mila has grown SO SO MUCH!!!!!!!! She gets cuter by the day. That is so cool she wants to help mommy in the garden. I suspect this could be a major lifelong bonding experience for the two of you, mother - daughter gardening dates. Way to go!!!! Maybe you could also start showing her how to do ASMR as well??? The garden is gonna be great by the time you get done, Maria.

Cute moment at the end there when you said "we're going to go.. (on with our lives)" and Mila heard the first part, and dropped her bike to ask you "Mama, where are you going?" My niece is like that too, always listening and always excited to go, it doesn't matter where lol.

Wow, Mila is truly growing up. So gorgeous like her Momma. Gardening in California is a lot harder as the soil tends to get dry and very compact, which makes it harder to dig. I prefer instead to use pots for growing flowers or plants and just to keep the lawn simple, its a lot easier to manage that way, I find.

I think it would be neat to put stone on the side of the yard instead of grass or mulch. You could have a water feature of some kind too and potted plants for color. You could have a couple of chairs and a table for Mila since it’s shaded. It could be a relaxing area to have.

Marsha try a “lazy gardening tip” on the weeds. Pile your lawn clippings at least 12inches on top along the fence and they will smother the weeds and mulch the area. You can pour your hot water after a boiled jug (for tea) on your problem weeds as well. That way less pulling, especially for the tiny ones.
The other ideas of laying pavers is a great idea. Have a look on local Marketplace or similar community sites for freebies. Often people have leftovers.
You can do so much with a fence in the sun, that another whole adventure! Vertical garden!

my mom has the same amount of space on the side of their house and wasn't sure what to do with it. She ended up making it a gnome garden, with tiny figurines and houses. She used different tiny stones to create mini landscapes. Then she ended up adding a little table and chairs for the grandkids to hangout in. It was a cute way to use that space, and it has such a whimsical feel to it.

I know you may never see this, but I'm so glad to see you're still here on UA-cam Maria! I began watching you in late 2011 when I had just turned 11 years old. I remember exactly how it happened too... As a kid, I had pretty bad anxiety from an early age, so much to the point where it would prevent me from falling asleep at night. Watching your videos would always calm me down when I was panicking... they'd put me right to sleep haha! I feel like I've quite literally grown up with you, as I've watched you as a kid, a preteen, a teenager, and now a 21 year old approaching his final year in college. I know you have no idea who I am, but if you are to know anything, I want you to know you've made such a positive impact on my life. I'm so happy to see how you've grown and become so wise. You always try to see the positive outlook on life, and that's truly inspiring. I wish the best to you, Daryl, and Mila, and I can't wait to see what's to come.

Маш, спасибо Вам за это огромное и низкий поклон, Вы стали для меня ещё более уважаемы и любимее❤❤❤🥺

Mila is so adorable! She is growing right before our eyes!😃Gardening takes a lot of hard work but with your care and your little helper, I think your garden will turn out lovely! As far as that space goes on the side of your house. I was thinking maybe keep the trees but build a patio or paved walkway, put in a fountain, light up the walkway with little lights for night time, plant some pretty shrubs or bushes, some baby tears, cute little flowers, some mint and lavender, put some knome statues. A little greenhouse or a small table with an umbrella and some outdoor chairs, like a French café style look. The possibilities are endless. Or create a Glass Sunroom!😊

For the little side yard my immediate thought was to clear it out and put down some outdoor flooring, set up a comfy bench/ couch and some chairs (maybe with some potted plants?), and add a gas fireplace between the trees. String up some fairy lights, it would be a super cute and cozy little hang out spot 🥺

I’d put the shed toward the back and do some shade happy plants and a little stepping stone path. Hostas do very well in shade if you want some greenery there. There are some shade happy flowers too, but take care to read which ones are toxic if Mila likes to pick flowers.
In my experience, the fabric with mulch on top works for a while, but we still get some weeds that pop through. Depending on what type of grass you have, some grasses can be invasive and encroach into the mulch. The fabric and mulch are definitely a deterrent for weeds. You could go maintenance free and do turf on the side yard. That would save water also. You could also do a flower planting station or work bench or a side yard seating area for shaded reading or tea time with Mila.
Your bush may come back with fertilizing and watering. If it was transplanted recently, you should definitely water it very regularly for 3-4 weeks. Transplanted plants (especially larger, established plants) usually go into shock and need a lot of extra care to bring them back. Keep the soil moist, not wet, for 3-4 weeks after transplanting. If it’s super hot and gets a lot of sun, then try to provide it with a little shade during the day if you can.

The side yard has so much potential! Instead of cloth, you could stifle the weeds with cardboard with mulch on top. You could also meadowscape with native wildflowers that shouldn't need much/any water as they're evolved to California's dryness and would provide lush habitat/food for insects and birds. You can also look up xeriscaping (landscaping with reduced water) for ideas on what kind of plants would thrive with little water and maintenance. A rock garden with sedum/succulents would be one pretty option requiring little work long-term.

I would put a shed in the sideyard and cover the ground in weed fabric then gravel. Add a small fire pit, furniture set and hang outdoor solar lights on the fence. The perfect spot for reading, playing, and making smore's 🙂 You could add plants in pots as well like ferns and things that appreciate shade.

Your yard is a dream 😍. I know there is a lot of work you want to do to it, but I just love it! Serene and private. Just beautiful!
Also for that side yard, shade fairy garden for Mila! You can plant foxglove, bleeding heart, and hosta. Put little fairy houses (kind of like Annemarie Garden). Also Cardboard works fantastic for weeds. It supresses them and also increases the quality of the soil as they break down. Cardboard covered in compost or soil. Good luck in your gardening!
Side note, some of those plants are toxic if ingested so maybe not those exactly. I just named some fairy looking flowers I personally love.

Hi Maria, I have a daughter (already 15!) and in her young years she loved to go on the swing. Bonus on your side yard spot: even on hot days swinging in the shade.
A little gardentoolshed might fit for al the outside toys😊

She's gotten so big!!! omg what a beautiful family and blessed mama!!
Dandelions are really important food for bees during the first of spring, I recommending leaving them were you can. Native bee especially suffer.
As far as that side space goes, you can easily turn it into a little swing area between the trees (and potentially a movie area if you have a projector and itll be especially cool once those trees grow and their far enough apart) or like a little veggie plot, or even better!!! Berry bushes!!
Or if you want to get cool and fancy you can get vine/grape plants to grow up the fence so you have a plant wall!
Also theres always the option of doing some cacti or zen garden

The brown/orange spots on your mandarin tree might actually be scale. If so you'd need to manually remove them as they have super hard exterior. But maybe there are other ways to tackle them in the yard, I'm only familiar with them on houseplants 🌱

Have you heard about clover lawns as opposed to grass for ground cover? I don’t know toooo much about it, but I’ve heard it’s very environmentally friendly and pretty much takes care of itself! Just a thought if you’ve never seen it before! Love the gardening content! ☺️❤️

Hi Mila! ☀️ Good job helping outside. So ideas for the side strip -add a sandbox or sand table for Mila -add a hammock between the trees for you! Both nice to have in the shade. Weed sheeting and mulch sounds good, with some good clearance for the trees. BTW I need to get one of those weed pullers!!
