Insane video. Been playing the Vienna for a while, only knowing the basics, but I wanted to go a step further and this video is exactly what I was looking for.
Literally first game after watching got the Anderson defence…. easy win from that. Anderson defence and max Lange look very similar to kings gambit positions…
Hello Volclus First of all, Really thank you for these masterclasses that you give for free tysm Second of all, when i learn my opening i get great position now i have a problem in taking advantage of my great position
Learning an opening is one thing... learning chess skill is another. You will need to focus on puzzles, and not just finding one move at a time, fully calculating and visualizing each puzzle. Which will teach you not only to find tactics, but to calculate lines, to visualize the board in future positions, and to look for the opponents responses to your ideas or for your opponents threats in general. Good opening knowledge can definitely get you winning positions, but if you can't calculate, find weaknesses, spot tactics for both players, etc... you will still lose winning positions. Don't focus so much on openings if this is your problem, focus on becoming stronger at the fundamentals and at tactics. Then go back to applying your strong opening and you will be sailing.
Volclus... love your videos!! I don't think I've ever commented on your videos before, but I just have to say, you are a really big help. With your 40 minute traxler counterattack video, I managed to get a 66% win rate with the traxler! I have been watching you since you had 8,000 subscribers, watching your shorts since then. I do sometimes see other channels re-upload your videos, but I forget the name. By the way, did anyone notice the position at 7:25 looks like a Halloween gambit?
People re-uploading chess videos is sadly a problem that all of us chess youtubers face, but people like you are the reason I really enjoy making these videos and why I will always continue.
Thank you so much, this video is absolutely the best Vienna overview on youtube. I put the Vienna gambit down for a while because I thought the main line was very dry but after watching this I see how interesting it is. Subscribed for sure!!!!
Thanks man I watched so many Vienna videos and none of them go as deep as this one does. Was really wondering why my winrate with white decreased heavily. Turns out I could have won so many games had I just known these moves lol.
Bro your videos are top notch informationally, I’m just breaking into openings and you cover just about every line I’ve seen played against these openings. Great job!
as a lifelong King's Gambit player, I find it interesting how often these positions are not just similar, but quite literally identical to well-known KG positions, and yet the two openings have such different reputations.
@@nb-eq6rw tbh I've not heard many saying the Vienna is dubious... and for sure, I don't think the Vienna carries the same reputation as the King's Gambit, which is just openly laughed at nowadays as an opening exclusively for maniacs and tricksters
I've Played some hundred games with vienna and most of them really went good. It's a really good opening at all levels, evryone should try it and BTW thank you because i little bit sucked at the max lange defense part but because of your free masterclass i'm able to tackle that, Keep it up buddy. EDIT: Can you make a video like this on modern Defense?
there's also one tricky line in the 2 knights variation if they retreat the knight back to c6 and then after e5 they pin the pawn with the Queen you should unpin it with the bishop instead of the Q because otherwise they hit you with Nxd4 and it gets really bad (even tho the engine still thinks it's better for white lol)
Oh my God! I stumbled upon your channel only today and what a treasure it is! Thank you so much for the instructive videos. I hope I come back with a stronger rating. I am currently 1229.
Help me understand at 5:48 why the black doesn’t want to lose the pawn on c7? Isn’t it protected by the black queen only leading to a trade? Or is that the point because your already winning?
Advice: When playing the Vienna Gambit.. if they play 4. Qe7 Qe2 5. Ng8, just play d4 right away instead of Nf3. Look into the line, you have a vicious trap if they play Qh4+ 😉
Then Bc4! Checkmate is threatened, and if they try Qe7 to defend then a simple cxd4 and we’re cleanly up a pawn. If they instead try Be6, then Bxe6, fxe6, and then Qxb7! We’ll then capture on d4 with a large advantage.
@@Volclus oh ok so can you show an opening with e4 which works against whatever they play? Because i usually play the London but I want an e4 opening which works with anything
4:37 Doesn't Bishop to C7 win the queen here? And I'd guess in general, in this line if they take their queen to almost any dark square you should be able to win it (instead of the rook) with a revealed attack.
How do you punish them if they go g5 to hang onto the pawn in the Vienna gambit accepted? If they continue to push to g4 you basically get the Muzio gambit, but what if they don’t?
After g5, we can strike with h4! Their only way to try to play on would be g4, we play Ng5, and if h6, then Nxf7! After Kxf7 and Qxg4, we are winning because their king is insanely unsafe.
At this point, this video is 9 months old now. But here is a vienna lover (as black) giving tips on how to improve this video variation. I play the Andersson defense and let me remind you, 2...Bc5 does NOT run into 3.f4, Fun fact: The annotation of the move should be => 3.f4?! In the andersson defense, after f4, I don't play anything that you have showed in the video. Instead, I play 3...Bxg1!? the move is kind of weird at first, but then you realise u have no knight to protect the king from check on h4. After Rxg1, Nc6 protects the pawn and lives go on. 5.fxe5 is still the best move according to stockfish, then we play, in classic gambit style, 5...d6 and after exd6, Qxd6. There are lots of things to worry about for white. Yes the queen is misplaced, but look at the position for white, the h pawn is hanging, king is far far from casting queenside, and his kingside is weak. Also my e4 e5 nf3 repertoire is based on the BGG, so 2.bc5 gives white as many chances as possible to transpose to stafford, traxeler or BGG exclusive lines. Let me remind you, my repertoire is for tactical players, if you play 1.d4 as white, I have no hopes for you to make proper use of this line. Why should you listen to me? idk, is 2200 rating not good enough to listen to someone? Maybe not, yeah, do as you wish. Always remember, you are playing against a human, not a computer, so giving away like 0.2, or 0.5 even, points of advantage just to get an attacking position and quick development, is not a bad choice, and you can base your repertoire around that playstyle you like.
As the white player, after you start with typical opening Vienna Gambit moves, you notice that your black player opponent is not making the typical normal responses, should you stop trying to play the VG and just play chess according to the current chess situation?
1. If black play's xf4 (accepting) 1:18

2. If they play's Nc6 (defence) 7:20

Help me understand at 5:48 why the black doesn’t want to lose the pawn on c7? Isn’t it protected by the black queen only leading to a trade? Or is that the point because your already winning?
There's just no reason for black to lose another pawn, it wouldn't be the end of the world, but it would give them a bigger disadvantage.
Amazing video. You covered the variations quite well! Subscribed 👍
Amazing guide, I just hit 1000 for the first time
If they push g5 after exf4 in the decline variation, then should you treat it as a kings gambit style position and sac the knight?
Absolutely! Playing this in Muzio gambit style is one of the best ways to play that.
I don't know how someone is soo criminally underated

I reviewed most of these lines with the engine and it's telling me everything is inaccurate. Is it a depth issue or did stockfish 16 get much better?
This is a pretty well made analysis of the Vienna. Try not to use the word “simply” so much. But overall it’s quality work.
Btw I had a question can you play the Vienna if they dont play e5 or they have to play e5 and only then you can play the Vienna?
E5 must come for it to be the Vienna

No, it doesn’t. After Bc7 Qe7 covers the check and you won the pawn
After Qd4 why black doesn't move the bishop to give the queen a safe square on c5
22:28 I never knew knights can castle

4:38 why not Bf7?
I prefer playing dxc3 in Vienna gambit mainline, but nice video 👍🏻

What if black accepts gambit and after white pawn to e5 , black moves knight to d5 threatening black queen to h4?
how would be best to go about memorizing this? for a beginner player 600 rating

Thanks in advance!
Can you do a nimzo indian ultimate guide?
What happens when opponent starts with d5 or c5 openings
Engine says 6.Qh4+ in the mainline wins!?
The problem with e4 openings is you're probably going to face a variation of Sicilian defence.
I feel it...
Against the Sicilian I go for a closed or the Wing Gambit. Against the French I also go for the Wing Gambit.
i like to respond with alapin variation (2. c3), below like 1800 sicilian players lose their minds
As a 800 elo player, no one in my elo level plays the Sicilian and even if they do play, they don't know what to do half the time.
The Alapin, Deferred Alapin, and Snyder are 3 good variations for beginners
I played this game a few times but most annoying is knight in the King side get pinned by Bishop
