Custom Insoles Transformed My On Bike Comfort. How Orthotic Footbeds Help With Cycling

- Hi everyone, I have long suffered on bike discomfort, as I am sure many of you have too. One thing that has really helped with this has been custom orthotic insoles.
In this video I visit a Scott Tomkinson of Kernow Physio to have a fresh pair of insoles made up, Scott talks us through some of the key points that go into assessing posture and analysing how I move before creating the orthotics.
This video easily could have been 40 minutes long with the knowledge and information Scott had to offer. Please feel free to ask any questions.

Forgot to mention, your audio is too low!
Ah, I'll have to avoid that in the next one!! Thank you.
Been having 3x bike fits, but still struggling a lot with numbness in my forefoot and saddle-discomfort. Been changing saddles, adjusted the position several times but still struggling. Also since I started to bike Ive been dealing with a lot of stressreactions in the metatarsals even though my running-volume is very low.
I am starting to think that my forefoot/toes get so much load during my riding, which reveals itself the moment I start to run/put more direct load on the actual joints. I have been using my costum-made insoles for running in my cycling-shoes (since they do also have a arch support and extra cushioning for the metatarsals), but maybe this is wrong? And maybe I need a special insole specifically for cycling? Would really appreciate any advice, since its been keeping me off both the bike and running-trails for over 2years now.
Scott is brilliant he gave me a bike fit and it was such a difference .
I had issues with my back and knee.
I can highly recommend him he solved these issues
👍👍
Thanks Chris. Thanks for sharing mate. Do you think i can find salvation from Metatarsalgia pain in my left feet. It is pain like hell After cycle 15 mile i must stop remove the shoes and stretch my feet fingers for 5 to 10m so i can go for another 15 mile and that the max distance i can go for.
First and first to say you're Two comfortable Feet ahead of the rest!
🤣🤣🤣
Hilarious 😆
I think your old footbeds must have walked out by themselves afterwards!
Do you give the same pressure when you standing up and when you peedal?
Great video Chris, I've had a couple of bike fits with Scott and they have been spot on, he certainly knows his stuff
fascinating video Chris, I struggle with after a long ride (160-170 km) my feet hurts like hell so i have to stop and take of my shoes....Its a good idea to get my feet tested/looked at and get some good insoles :)
Strangely enough my knees are ok
Nice camera work too Meike!
Thank you Bob! On behalf of Meike 😅. It's worth investigating, I used to suffer with hotspots and numb toes, but the insoles have always really helped .
Just bought new Lake MX238s and going for Sidas fitting in a few days. Looking forward to it.
Highly recommend. By far my best investment for my feet. Thank you Chris for this new video.
I'm pleased to read you agree, Johan! Hope you continue to enjoy comfortable feet 😅
@@chrisopie87 Thank you Cris. I’m dealing with minor scoliosis and Leg Calve Perthes disease, so my feet, shoes and insoles comes first.
Sorry to hear that, I can imagine it's more than a little challenge to find good equipment to support and help with this.
I'm starting to conclude that rather than spending on multiple jerseys, gloves etc, we all might be better to save towards a bike fit and also maybe insoles if necessary. Thought provoking.
They make a huge difference (Sidas Footbeds) . Had mine done a few years ago by Adrian Timmis and never looked back 👍
It's incredible how many things a bike fitter has to take into account and analyse. And how unaware we are of our movement patterns. Unfortunately, there's no bike fitter in Romania that I know of. If there are any fellow countrymen and women following you, I would appreciate it if they dropped a name here.
I have an old ankle injury. Recently I raised the saddle about 2cm. That brought my heels out slightly and both ankles and knees are feeling better. An inveterate heel driver, the hips are still not rocking. My inner soles probably look worse than that, so that is food for thought. Thank you for helping me have a fuller understanding.
Great video Chris and nice new shoes. Super interesting as always. I loved hearing the theory relating to muscle and foot twist
Really really interesting. I’ve get pins & needles in my foot on longer rides or when I’m really going for it. Tried literally everything I can think of but never got to the bottom of it. Maybe this is something I should be looking into.
Very interesting, not just the biomechanics which is fascinating but the machinery is like something off Tomorrows World.
How many times have you squeezed those orthotics in 6 years, must be in the millions, I expected them to disintegrate! Great vid, cheers.
Thank you Ian . That's a good question, I'd love to work out how many thousands of KMs they've covered. Does tomorrow's world still exist? 😅
Scott did my bike fit 10 years ago. I'm still using the same measurements. Top Guy and Friend!
10 years is really good going!! It was nice seeing Scott in work mode, I am always in awe when someone has knowledge and passion and it just flows without interruption, it was the same here.
Another good video Chris, have ridden with Scott on many occasions and endured his brutal training sessions with NV in its infancy, he was my first port of call after a nasty fall from scaffolding, to sort my neck and back out, also sorted my riding position, can highly recommend.
Thank you Roger! He does like to make everyone suffer 😅 . Hopefully you have no lasting issues after the fall!
Really interesting video Chris, good to see the process and especially from someone who knows his stuff.
I like that it is a little bit different to what you normally do, would be good to see more of these types of video, keep up the great work.
Meike, excellent camera work! :-)
Thank you Ian! I'll keep this in mind. You may have noticed the opening shot of me talking was not filmed by Meike, this is what happens when I try to use the camera 🤣🤦♂️
Great video Chris. I broke my left knee cap last October, and since getting back on the bike have been getting knee pain. Have a basic bike fit scheduled (my first) but I will now consider orthotics too if the pain continues.
That sounds incredibly painful. I hope you've recovered well and good luck with the bike fit!!
@@chrisopie87 Looking forward to see how you get on with your new orthotics.
Im currently hobbled with feet problems so thank you for the info
It's well worth the time/outlay to visit someone. Like Scott says it might not help everyone, but a great place to start for many. Good luck!
@@chrisopie87 now to find somewhere in scotland, cornwall is a bit too far for now!
I'm going to have to check that out next time I'm in Cornwall!
It's well worth it, I find.
One thing I've always struggled with finding insoles that don't raise the heel. Cycling shoes are quite intolerant of this, often the shoe doesn't work properly if your heel isnt in the "pocket".
I know exactly what you mean, you need to have your heel locked in, in order to feel securely buckled into the shoe. These do raise the heel slightly, but it isn't by much. I'm sure exactly how the end product feel will vary from shoe to shoe, too.
Couldn’t agree more! Have struggled for a couple of years to get comfortable in shoes on the bike and finally bit the bullet and visited a relatively UA-cam-famous bike shop in Richmond for a proper fitting.
Proper sizing and (pricey, but excellent) footbeds later and it’s made all the difference.
Pleased to hear that Adam!! Hope the footbeds continue to do their job for you, too!
