As someone who got absolutely wrecked in the Dot Com bust, I absolutely hate these insane valuations. Some people argue they will never drop or compress like they did during the Dot Com bust, but I watched stocks like Amazon do nothing for years after busting hard. I know how bad that feels to have bunches of your money tied up in destroyed stocks for a decade. Man, it is hard to overcome that fear to invest in some of these crazy valuations. CRWD is maybe going to hit 4 billion in revenue and it is valued at almost 20 times sales. I know what can happen to companies valued at 20 times sales as soon as they hit any kind of bump and it is a terrible, terrible loss of capital for a unknown period of time even if you don't sell. Hard to jump in when valuations are like this. Just feels dangeorus.
Totally understand. We've been through a few ourselves -- 2008-9, and the more recent bear market of 2020 and 2022. CRWD made it through the last bear market almost unscathed. Paying a premium valuation makes no sense. But it also pays to try and understand why a premium may be there. If it's simply for the revenue growth, then yes, it's eventually going to get wiped out. But if there's a deeper reason, a premium valuation may not be so crazy after all.
For the record, we use a barbell approach in our portfolio. It's not just high-growth high-valuation momentum businesses.
