    In 1962, JFK gave a speech to the nation challenging them to make a "great national effort." He held the La Sierra High PE up as the model for the nation to follow. 4,000 high schools followed this program. This is the only known digitized copy of his speech. The footage shows one high school PE class. Remember, this is a normal PE class at high school. This was PE 50 years ago in America! This is just a small part of a full documentary film project we are working on that shows the "why" behind vigorous physical exercise. It has interviews with top MD's and Ph.D's from Harvard Medical School, MIT, Cleveland Clinic, MUSC, etc., and summarizes over 1,000 peer-reviewed studies linking vigorous physical exercise to emotional health, high academic test scores, and productivity.
    This is not about our waistline. We plan to bring it to theaters in the summer of 2016. Help us make this film a reality. Consider supporting the full documentary film project here: www.indiegogo....
    You can also order the "Strength & Endurance Routine" which was the "secret sauce" this school used 50 years ago to get the kids in amazing shape. This "SE Routine" was filmed in the original gym and includes a 2-bundle package of a 40-minute instruction video and a 12-minute routine video. www.reelhouse....

      +12Toastie - The inside scene with the boys in the white shorts were the freshman (normal) students...when you saw gold shorts, those were the advanced. This was the entire school. It was mandatory for every single student to participate. Initially it was just the boys, since the girls were separate for PE and their teacher didn't follow this program, but after Title 9 in CA, everyone did it. I have footage...the entire school looked like this.

    True story here: at age 14, before COVID hit, my son was 210 pounds of fat, played video games, ate junk, and basically could not run even 50 yards. Good kid but just obese, slow lumbering sort of pleasant young man. Somewhat depressed also. Then COVID hit. My daughter asked me to buy a treadmill so she could exercise in the garage after her online school etc. I thought it was going to be another useless purchase but the daughter never asks for anything so I went ahead and bought a decent mid-priced treadmill. I put it in the garage. The daughter started using it. One day, about a week later, to my surprise I noticed my son out in the garage get on it and try to walk/run for about 3 minutes. I said nothing to him as he was very self conscious. Anyway, after that day he started going on that treadmill everyday. First he walked a bit, then he started running on it, but he did it everyday. He literally did not take a day off, at all. Fast forward 6 months and he had lost around 50 pounds and was running 3 miles minimum everyday and doing pull ups etc. Then, miracle of miracles, he decided to join the high school track team in 400 meter hurdles and actually competed in all the meets all season. He did not win any meets, but to me he was the biggest winner of all. A kid who could not run 50 yards at age 14/15, running 400 meters in regional high school meets and being competitive with the best of the regional runners. To this day, he exercises everyday.... running, weights etc. He is a good kid. Now he has graduated from high school and I hope he continues to keep himself healthy in life. Just wanted to share this little story.

      LightInTheNight1337 One study showed that the in guinea pigs that ate GM tomato eventually developed stomach ulcers. Those mice that ate genetically modified soy had damaged the liver, pancreas, and testes, while this strain of rabbits led to kidney patients and serious heart problems.
      For example, the ingredients from GM soy change the DNA of friendly bacteria that normally live in our bodies, turning them against us. Also, toxic substances from genetically modified maize were found in the blood of pregnant women and their unborn babies. Since 1996, when it was first served a meal consisting of GM foods, until today, the number of Americans suffering from one or more chronic diseases jumped is as much as 10 percent. Food allergies are more common, and more and more children with autism, people with problematic digestive system, as well as those battles are fought with infertility. Doctors warn that more and more women who have elevated secretion of the hormone IGF-1 directly associated with breast cancer, a good portion of them drank the milk of cows that have been injected growth hormone.

      Cole Bevans I agree! We learnt different sports in our PE programs in Australia, instead of general physical strength, fitness and endurance training. Our sports training lasted a couple of PE lessons, and then the teachers would change it up to move on with the curriculum and we'd never actually learn the sport properly end-to-end anyway, which was a total waste of time.
      Most of us were lazy and made excuses not to work hard in PE, because we just found it so boring and unmotivating. The only girls who were fit were those who played team sports on the weekends outside of school (because their parents made them to from young) or those who joined a gym after graduation and got fit after high school because they realized it was time.

    I think what we should do is have PE classes that focus on encouraging people to better themselves physically. Have everyone who is a beginner, overweight in a class together and then people who are intermediate level in a class together and then people who are advanced/fit in a class together so that everyone is on the same level and playing field with one another instead of having everyone mixed together and expected to do the same thing. Yes its good to get people moving and in shape but we need to also meet people where they are at. Many people who are overweight get discouraged and end up dreading gym class cuz they are mixed in a group of people who are more Athletic than them and feel inadequate in comparison which makes them not want to even try. We should implement a physical fitness program in schools for all students but at least have a bit of customization to where the program meets people where they are at instead of just doing a blanket one size fits all for eveyone.

Speaking as a 70-year-old man, I get more exercise in a single workout session with my personal trainer than I ever did in an entire year of "sports only" mandatory phys ed.

Teach actual health from a young age trust me this will work, The "health classes" stuck with me because when i was trying to lose weight i thought back to them but we have to teach what actually works (Calories in vs calories out, How much protein you should eat, Good foods) This is probs the only way, Along with promoting sports if they understand calories protein etc they can even excel at sports themselves without a coach. I mean all i was taught in healthy classes was "good foods" so veggies, and chicken and stuff. So i thought thats all i needed to lose weight was to just eat healthy. But you can eat as healthy as you want if you are eating to much, You will still be fat. Anyways alot of people get fat not because they are lazy Unless they are 600 pounds. its because they eat a bit to much (200-500 calories and on cheat days even more) daily and over long periods of time (From childhood 11-13 to adult) become fat. Its a very long bulk essentially. Just saying because alot of ppl like to call them lazy and tell them "eat healthy" none of that helps and will only hurt them.

Schools should teach health, disease prevention, how to eat properly, basic food science. And it's about 60 to 40 rather than a 90 to 10 ratio. And Phys ed has nothing to do with why Baby Boomers are more athletic. Their lifestyles were simply more active.

Fine, youll just be sitting at a computer and working all day for the rest of your life, your muscles will slowly atrophy and you wont be able to participate in the lives of your children and grandchildren. I say its pathetic to suggest physical education should be PHYSICALLY tested. So sometimes you have to not only teach, but also test the ability for the student to apply what has been taught. When I was little in the 60's, our high school had discus throwing pads, pole vault runways and sand pits, tire obstacle courses for football training, etc. I used to go there to run and jump in the sand. When I started high school in the mid 70's, the hallways were lined with old black-and-white photos of school athletes from the 50's and 60's who had won various awards. But all the outdoor track-and-field facilities were gone. Phys. Ed. was a shadow of its former self. The indoor gym storage room was filled with gymnastic equipment, pommel horses and stuff, that was no longer used. When I enquired about this, I was told it was because of lawsuits and liability. When a few of us tried to play soccer on the school field on the weekends, a security guard appeared to kick us off because we didn't have a permit. And that was in the 70's. I wonder what it's like now? Is it any wonder kids are fat and on drugs?

I made it to Blues, and you'll see in this clip that all the guys are mostly gold shorts or purple shorts, which indicated a high standard of tested achievement (levels went from White shorts to Red, Blue, Purple, Gold and Navy Blue. Many made purple,some made gold and only a select few ever made Navy). So this is a promo film and wasnt necessarily a typical PE class. Close though, and when I went there, accountability still meant something. the coaches/PE teachers did not coddle anyone on the test standards. I myself was tortured into fitness by Coach
    Al Hooker. And if you were a fat emo snowflake who put in no effort and were stuck wearing white shorts, you were singled out and likely failed PE. Back then though snowflakes and emos were just starting to be a thing.

There's no way a program like this, if implemented correctly, wouldn't shape America and Americans for the better. My only concern is how sensitive we have become in terms of physically educating children. Information is so instantaneous and widespread I fear that one single abuse scandal or coach going to far puts the whole program at risk of being shutdown.

    • @DougOrchardFilms
      @DougOrchardFilms  9 років тому +13

      Great point. We'll try to preempt that concern in the documentary. The program historically did not have the injury problems that we have today. However, if coaches try to just "implement" this without taking into account the postural deviations of today's youth, or have them try to progress without following the rational training structure that existed with this historic approach, they would possibly have similar injury rates that our youth are experiencing in today's activities. They key is knowledge. Please understand the program didn't start like this for the boys. This was not 'day 1.' This was rational training. This program worked because the coaches received quality instruction, and then provided that quality instruction to the student leaders and to the students. This focus on quality was easier to inspect since all students worked through their patterns in unison.

    • @obscurelyvague
      @obscurelyvague Рік тому

       @hardluck8732 That is often-used argument against "over education."
      Admittedly the average person would not use physics or calculus often or directly throughout his or her life.
      Most people become porters, cleaning ladies, receptionists, bike messengers, warehouse workers, inventory takers, fast-food servers, and other lower level jobs that require physical work or just basic reading and writing and arithmetic skills .
      However, though a person after reaching the age of about 20 may not use a lot, or any of what a lot of people would consider the "crap" learned in high school which now-a-days could be at least a basic understanding of environmental science, literature, creative writing, critical thinking, algebra, biology, organic chemistry, social studies, civics, (etc) the average person just should be well educated because it is a safeguard and serves a purpose. What if a person decides later in life to change careers? What if a person decides to try for higher-skilled work? As society gets more technological people need understand computers and electronics. It seems being better educated prepares you for life in the civilized world, unless you intend to move to a hidden jungle somewhere and live eating nuts from trees and hunting with a spear. Actually if you understand physics, you can understand that building a mud hut should be done a certain way so that it does not fall over when the wind blows. Also, that you often need to aim higher than your exact target when throwing your spear a far distance .
      The idea that a mind is a terrible thing to waste has been taken over by a mentality of entitlement and laziness..
      My parents actually never sent me to school.
      When I was in my mid 20s I had to catch up to what a lot of elementary schoolers already learned but I decided to go to college. My dad who was a kid in the 1920s thought that there are shortcuts and he quit school at 8th grade because he believed he knew more than any of the teachers.
      He said that schools cannot help you find a job after you graduate.
      My older friend who had an excellent education back in the 1950s told me that it is not the job of schools to find employment for people. And the purpose is to help you understand reality so that later in adult life, you can think and reason and when you go to a doctor and he tells you to eat a better diet you don't think that it means eating ketchup as a vegetable and also, being better educated will help you in eventually finding employment unless you are inherently a very senseless person or for some other reason are not easily employable such as you are handicapped.
      Furthermore a person has to be very lucky to have a good enough education to obtain all "excessive" knowledge as a lot of schools in the US ( and elsewhere in the world) are not run the right way and/or do not have enough funding or the right administration so as to provide a good education for a lot of kids who are going to go into the workforce and hopefully become the kind of people who can benefit society and the economy . After all, the rest of the world has to be concerned with whether there will be a lot of drop outs not only of school but of society and who will only become welfare recipients, or homeless people or drug addicted unemployable people who cannot benefit the economy or society but will require resources and tax money to be given services for their rehabilitation, their housing, and other needs that they are not working for.

    Take a look at the students now. They are in their 60's and are still in great shape. Teaching kids health and fitness early and it will keep them fit and healthy for the rest of their lives.

      Anonland seriously have no idea why fat shaming is disregarded today in today's society. I mean we all make fat kids' lives hell, but where does the voice of the opposition, i.e. the fatties defending fatties, getting all their influence and voice amplifiers from?
