My gloves got steamed 4 years ago and it was a A2000 and it still is in perfect shape today! I think it all depends on the store and if the worker lets you pound the glove or he/she does It themselves.
In my opinion the best way is to use the glove I know it sounds simple but just phasing it in overtime as well as I think conditioning your gloves I use beeswax it’s a UV protectant it’s a waterproofer and it’s just really high-quality stuff. Jesus bless y’all.
Agree alot with your way. The hot water is just the faster way. Only thing is with the heel, depending on how you close your glove, careful with the heel. For instance my son closes his glove to where the pinky closes almost to the pointer. Not quite but close. In closing the glove that way, you want to keep the integrity of the heel. So only one break point between the stitches by pinky. Very good video young man!! 100% right. Just play catch and work pocket is absolute best!!
I've always wrapped my gloves(with a ball inside) with rubber bands after breaking in. I never thought about using something wide like ace bandage. Thank you for this video! My future Marucci Capitol T web thanks you.
Oiled and baked every glove I've ever owned. The key is to take laces out, oil very heavily, place ball in pocket, loosely tie glove around ball, and bake in oven at lowest setting for a long time. Minimum 10 hours. Take glove out of oven, re-lace, and then play catch/pound pocket immediately afterwards. Never had any issues with burning or discoloration. Breaks in super soft with a very defined pocket.
how i break on my glove: - establish break points, bend them into those positions and hit with weight - roll the hinge so it is loose and can close with ease - use a weight or ball (or weighted ball) and hit it into the pocket, to get it deep and flexible - catch with it
The issue with steamings is the person doing them. I work for a company that does them and I do most of them for my store. That being said every negative that was mentioned I personally do not do. My background with gloves is from hockey and I’ve always played with really stiff gloves so I work gloves by hand externally and never put my hand in them.
i recommend putting a softball in the pocket (11” for infield, 12” for outfield) and just beating the palm and pocket with a ball or mallet. glove conditioner is good if it is a trusted brand with lanolin in it but i find its better for glove restoration more than breaking in the glove
Great video the only thing i disagree with is that you dont use any oil. At some point you will need to use oil If you want it to last. I just bought a new rawlings heart of the hide and i used nokona oil and used the rawlings break in kit with the wide strap and plastic ball. I do like the mallet thing. I bought it for my boy and i told him that you are the only one that puts the glove on.
Aso from Wilson sports is the God of breaking in gloves. He does all the major league baseball players Wilson gloves and he uses hot water and a mallet. Best way I've seen and used on all my catchers mitts. Breaks them in super fast and they last multiple seasons.
On a brand new glove I use one thin coat of rawlings glovolium. Let it soak in while wrapped up with a candle pin bowling ball for 24 hours...I use an elbow compression sleeve for the wrap and make sure the thumb and pinky are encouraged out. Then I'll pound the pocket with the bowling ball... and that really gets me a wide pocket. And then just play catch and pound from time to time with the different size balls. It takes a bit of time with high end gloves but it's worth it. No water no steam no cooking it.
Steaming a glove is probably unnecessary but not going to ruin your glove. I’m sure if you left it in too long maybe it could. I use a little bit of glove conditioner, mallet the heel, then play catch with someone who can throw hard… then repeat mallet and catch. I store my outfield glove with a softball in it so I don’t crush the pocket.
Have broken in 2 gloves with the hot glove/oven method. Just dont set the temp low and remove before recommended time....put glove conditioner on it and reheat. Worked great for me on A2000 and A900
Barbershop shaving cream allover glove wrap in towel and place in microwave 40-50 secs. It conditions the glove W the lotion from Shave cream the globe is very soft after allowing u to break it in and shape it. As long as its wrapped your good w the microwave.
Breaking in a glove just takes time. It becomes a personal thing. I've never oiled, hot watered or cooked my glove to break it in. It just takes time. I usually like my gloves pretty flat so I just beat the shit out of it for long periods of time. Catchers mitts are a whole different animal. Those take some serious time.
I just got my A2000 steamed and it was fine. Honestly barely broke it in but I could just feel that it was a little softer. I had my old Rawlings steamed too and it was fine. I don’t see anything wrong with steaming but I could see how if you did it wrong it could be bad.
Yeah some people say just use a microwave or try that run it through hot water technique. Well, they can gloat about the time they save until they gotta buy another glove in a week
I could be doing it wrong but I just oil my sons glove up for protecting the leather and we get out and play catch every chance we get so his glove breaks in/settles to his hand and hes always loved the way the end up working for him, no pounding it or anything else I think it builds his pocket to where he is going go naturally catch the ball every time
I’ve always conditioned the glove and put a ball where I want the pocket and then put it under my mattress. It’s always worked well to soften it enough for general use to break it in all the way 🤷♂️
You don’t need to microwave or put it in the oven I put the nokona cream on my 1st base mitt and rolled it and tied it up and leave it in the sun or front of the car with a bag on it and the glove feels amazing
@@kaviscool_9799 I did this for years. All I did was throw a softball in the pocket and put it under my mattress for the night and the weight of the you sleeping on it starts forming the pocket. I just play catch to work gloves in now.
Another thing with the steaming and the hot water method is yes it makes it nice and loose when it’s fresh out of the steamer/water but later on it can dry out the leather and make your glove flaky and gross
I think the color running concern you brought up with hot water break in might not apply to all gloves, particularly pro series gloves. I've hot water molded my Wilson A2000 and Wilson A2K this way as recommended by Shigeaki Aso, and was able to break them in to game ready within a week, and full break in within 2
the hot water treatment only really applies to gloves with extreme colouring, such as royal blue, green, red, or other heavily dyed colours. 44 Pro doesnt recommend it because of the risk that could occur, and they dont want to be held responsible for any issues if someone does do it.
Anyone ever use one of those massage guns to give a new glove a little break-in? Couldn't find any evidence of it being done, but I was thinking it might be worth a try.
What size is that 574? I'm thinking about a 12" h-web. I like the look of it without the palm overlap, and less welting. Is it similar to a Rawlings PRO 206 like some big league third baseman use?
Tyler Hillkirk I understand that. If hot water works for you then keep doing it. In my experience I’ve seen plenty of gloves come out perfectly fine, but I’ve also seen a lot (wilson, rawlings, 44) ruined by the hot water method
Water mold kinda blows my mind. Idk how many games I’ve played in the pouring rain and I’ve never seen mold. Maybe if you threw it in a bag for 6 months and didn’t let it air out.
Hey great video man! Can I use my semi truck when it’s fully loaded grab my glove and a towel wrap it up and then run it over with the 34,000 pounds of force that the trailer has and then squeegee it with The turning Of the trailer.?
But not the mallet. He isnt the only person to say this. I talked to this guy at my local batting cages and we asked about steaming the glove and he said the same thing.
I threw mine under my mattress, with the ball tightly in the pocket for 2 days, and it's pretty broken in, besides the heal. The heal I'm just working on it, bending it a lot with my hands
Benny what’s the color way of that glove that glove stands out the most in your collection and it just has a nice clean Finnish I’m asking because I’m going to buy a glove just like it
I don’t like these methods because it takes away the fun of breaking in a glove. I like seeing the progress a glove makes from being extremely stiff outside of the box to being broken in all by just hitting it with a mallet
my mum almost got my favourite glove steamed because the break-in was taking longer than i expected (i take a while but not usually a full year, mind you we didnt have the winter season due to the virus), so she told me that whilst we go to our local baseball store we should steam the glove cause they got a new machine. i told her i might but i have no reason to go that far just for that. thank god i didnt cause the glove is so nice

I do steaming and btw what's wrong with a black mallet it makes sense to have a black mallet because they probably never replace the mallet so that means they have probably had that mallet for long terms
I think he was implying that the mallet was not originally black and only turned that color bc of steaming then using it to break in black gloves. The implication being that steaming causes the glove to lose it’s color. Not sure I buy that idea, but pretty sure it’s was part of the reason for his recommendation not to steam
I was breaking in a glove using shaving cream twice on it, and just playing catch and pounding the pocket and break points with a softball. Having trouble with the fingers protruding into the pocket when closing the glove. Is there any way to correct this?
