  • Many people have asked why I use an Edge Pro as opposed to a KME or Wicked Edge. Hopefully this will answer some of your questions. This was totally unscripted, so I might have missed something.
Anyways, thanks for watching. I'll do a video on why I don't use a Wicked Edge at some point, since that's highly requested too.

I purchased an Apex in 2016 after seeing the edges it was giving compared to the Work Sharp. At the time my limited knowledge of truly sharp knives made me think the Work Sharp was the pinnacle. TheApostleP did a video called, "bad knife sharpening what did that knife do to you?" which finally threw me to buy an Apex. After 3 years of owning it and oddly enough a lot of trail and error, for some reasons some knives would come out so good I never wanted to use them again and others would have rounded tips or the bevel was huge, things which I've since polished out of my technique, I told myself that in early 2019 I'd get a Professional model... It arrived last week and so far I am just a completely satisfied customer. I also over the course of three weeks (three pay checks) purchased the 220, 320, 500, 1000, 4000, 8000 and 16000K Shapton glass stones for the Edge Pro and they are insanely good. I honestly feel like I have my perfect kit now.
Side fun note... In December of 2018 I quit my job at an aerospace company of 5 years and took that month off... In January of 2019 I quickly landed nearly the exact same type of job at a local machining company. On my first day I started noticing parts that looked REALLY familiar to me. Within an hour of my first day I noticed that the company I work for does literally ALL the machining work for the Wicked Edge... I just was laughing at the odds of someone like me landing a job like that. So... I get to stare at rows and rows of Wicked Edge's (minus the stones, they come from another place) being assembled and machined,, but EVEN with that I much prefer my Edge Pro.

MidnightSundowns What's the difference between the Apex and the Pro model?
Also did you consider the Tormek T4?
Literally for the past 5+ years I keep debating, reading and trying to decide now between the Tormek T4 & Edge Pro.
I've have the KME and hated it, had the Worksharp Ken Onion and hated it as well.
Have the Spyderco Sharpmaker and it's well... so so on maintaining an already sharp edge.
I've also looked at many other sharpeners like the House of Blades belt sharpener and the AME belt sharpener but I don't like the fact of for 1) fine metal dust in the air and have to wear a respirator and 2) the beveled rounded edge belt sharpeners produce VS. a true flat edge that stones produce.
With the Tormek the metal dust is trapped in the water and with the Edge Pro metal dust isn't really an issue because of the slow speed.

I'm using the Hapstone V6 and the 3 point guide is awesome! I was also going to say that Gritomatic has a huge stone selection for the Edge Pro and KME. I have modified an Edge Pro Small Knife Attachment for use on the V6. One thing I would like to add about the Wicked Edge: it's advised to use the Tormek small knife adapter for narrow blades. It introduces all kinds of flex which causes multifacets. I have zero problems sharpening a Case Trapper with the Small Knife attachment.

The adjustment you mentioned at 12:00 should not be the full bevel angle reading. The angle cube reading relative to the platform is the full bevel angle. Let's say that you lay a flat grind blade on the platform and you use the angle cube and you get a reading of 4 degrees. The adjustment you have to make should be 1/2 of the total reading, i.e. the adjustment should only be 2 degrees in this case.

Great explanation of your opinions. That skill is becoming more rare each year.
I have the EP Apex but was developing a wandering eye and considering other systems. You have me back on track, and saving up for the Professional model. I appreciate the heads up on aftermarket accessories too. I was going to order directly from Edge Pro (where I bought my Apex) but will now flesh out my grit selection using the power of the internet. ;)

Using the stone arm adjustment is easy. The two screws closest to you adjust the ramp height (needs to be adjustable as stone thicknesses vary). The single screw locks it in. It is that easy.

Yeah, me to. For my purposes (almost all knives under 6 inches) it's fine and the floating clamp even makes full flat grinds basically a non issue but if I was running a service I'd want something versatile enough to handle larger and more oddball edge profiles.
It should also be noted that you can get Shapton Glass, Chosera, Spyderco, and a variety of other natural and synthetic stones for the KME from places like Gritomatic, Jende, and Amazon.

  • @ColocasiaCorm

I like Edge Pro and Work Sharp because you can adjust the knife angle so that the abrasive is perpendicular to the edge. Lansky, KME, and Wicked Edge will have slight (probably inconsequential) variation in bevel angle. Honorable mention goes to whetstones if you really like to freestyle.

@@bp-hx9ts The back of clamp is not fixed (floats). It woks good on Spyderco. The smaller clamps of the TSPROF Blitz work by cranking them down independently along the length of the blade. I like the clamping systems for setting the bevel even. Free hand is faster by a lot when just getting the knife sharp is the goal. : )

Debating on which sharpening system to get. This seems vastly more inconsistent than the KME. Wouldn't the fact that the knife isn't fixed change the angle due to it moving "in or out" of the path of the stones? "Flexibility" seems like a very bad thing. Not very experienced obviously, just stating what I'm thinking.

    BIG. MISTAKE.
The wicked edge is nice but it has so many downfalls. KME is better if you ask me. I would really really love to see a video on why you don't like the Wicked Edge. I am very curious to know.

I agree with you. I had a pretty nicely specc'd WE to upgrade from my KME and while impressive, it didn't over any real functionality over the KME when it came to pocket knives (which is the vast majority of what I sharpen).

Hi, I have a KME with the Lapping film kit. The TSPROF Blitz 30 uses the 1 x 6 Edge Pro stones.
Do you know where the finer grit tapes can be had. Edge Pro has 2,000, 3,000, 6,000

I have had an EP pro since about 2010, and now in 2021 have just bought the TSPROF K03
In regard to Spadeworks comment on Full grind knives and clamps, the TSPROF sprung clamps gets around that issue, by having a clamp angle adjusting screw at the back... so you spread the back of the clamp, an it pushes the tips of the clamps, into the same angle as the full grind angle, so you get full contact on the full grind.
The metal ramp on the sprung stone clamp, a fiddle to adjust, but i think it is great, allows you to sharpen from ‘beyond’ the stone , just needs careful adjustment of the silver ramp height.

I’d like to say I prefer the Edge Pro, simply because their customer service is the best of any company out there. You speak with Ben & Cody directly, they build the systems, and you get an answer within the day. TSPROF can take forever on e-mail... but get hold of Marina on their direct TSPROF.com website and you can chat live.
The clamping and rotating is really convenient, far more accurate for consistency...for blades that have a flat surface, unless you get the clamp adjusted correctly, as the guy above talks about in this video... but maybe he had not tried the spring clamps that help in clamping a full flat grind blade.
I’ve had my Edge Pro for 12 or more years... and still find keeping angle consistent on blades with a flat, like a Buck 110, a pain... But big flat blades on the EP are great.
All of the aftermarket stones etc he talks about for the Edge Pro, also fit the TSPROF.
Advantage of non clamping system is that you can test the edge on your arm hair or piece of paper as you sharpen. With blade clamped in a clamp system, not so easy and you really do not want to be taking blade out, then the hassle of putting if back exactly the same place.
Any clamp system has to be a compromise on best place to clamp the knife, to get consistency of angle along the edge and around the curve.
With the Edge Pro, you move the blade along and follow the curve of the blade, so the cutting edge is always at the same angle to the stone. Not 100 % possible with a clamp, you can get close enough, but it won’t be EXACTLY the same down to fractions of a degree.... but then again, you can say the same about the Edge Pro... or any table system... as the angle relies on you moving the knife constantly. And .... if you stop sharpening a particular knife... phone goes... doorbell ring... you need a coffee/beer etc... you are liable to come back and be sitting / standing holding the knife differently, so you don’t get the same angle again, same movement as you slide the blade ‘around the corner’ of the blade curve/table edge. With a clamp system... blade is exactly where you left it.
Very very fractionally in accurate in angle along the blade, around the curve BUT it is consistent for that sharpening, as long as you leave it clamped...Go away from the job for two weeks... still the same angle. BUT if you have to clamp it again second time you sharpen it... getting it clamped the same is not really possible...unless you take measurements/notes/photos of each blade in the clamp...
On a long sharpening.. very dull blade, it can get tedious holding the knife exactly on the table.
If I had to buy just ONE again... it would be difficult choice. Probably the K03. it is big heavy system, but NOT as industrial as some reviewers have you believe... it is not ‘Bridgeport Milling Machine , or even HarborFreight /Sealey lathe solid ... but it is good
If you can join some of the FaceBook Sharpening-groups, like Edge Snobs,, Guided Sharpeners etc, see if any one local has one of any you can go and try. Visit a knife show if there is anything like that in your country/ area.
Ultimately I’d like to design / build my own... but that is long term ...
Plenty of space and money... get one of each.

I really hate the fact that my Apex came with one "broken" suction cup and the other isn't enough to keep it down. I have the glass leveling circle as well. But it moves the second I go to make a stroke. It wobbles all over the place. I push it up to the edge of the rubber ring on the leveling glass and it works...but it's still a pain in the ass.
