I'm in the process of doing a 1979 50cc Motobecane restore/modify build. Prior to 1978 they were all 6v, mine is 12v. Super cool variator drive engine. These are the best mopeds out there. If you can find them buy them! With a new 70cc cylinder head and bigger carb it will do 60mph! Good luck, Cheers from Colorado
I bought my son a 1980 mobylette years ago for $75 and he enjoyed it thoroughly. I wish we never sold it, such a well built classic moped. Love yours too.
Hi Martin, great vid. Mobylettes are notorious for ignition problems, try replacing the condenser. They tend to crap out first as they overheat due to being attached to an especially hot part of the motor, so people often externally mount replacements. Also the yellow Novi coils are usually pretty suspect, and a lot of mobylette guys use two earth straps to the coil just to be sure. If all that doesn't work replace the points even if they seem ok, as they usually aren't. Nice bike tho, let me know when you want rid, I'm just up the road near Newark. Looking forward to the next episode, and you've inspired me to start powder coating so thank you
Im sure you'll have it running in no time! You probably already know most of the stuff on here, but this might be helpful www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Guide_to_Motobecane_spark_and_timing
Those French Mobylettes are bullet proof ! They had 3 models, the Yellow (Jaune) The blue (bleu) & The top of the line Orange with front & rear shock absorbers . I had all of them ...yours is the best ! Cheers from France 😎
Well the Mobylette brought back memories and so did the Puch Maxi , the Mobylette was owned by my dad and I drove the neighbours up the wall riding it up and down our drive ,the Puch was my first moped after they put the min age up to 17 , found out by taking the air cleaner off it it would rev and rev down hill instead of " four stroking " great vid good luck with the Moby , quite rare now .
I also would look at the stator. The generator has a permanent magnet, which might loose magnetic force after years of not being used. You could try to re-magnetise the magnet or eg put a dc current on the coil of the magnet when the engine runs. If the ac output voltage is higher, you know this is the problem ....
Another great find Martin, We did enjoy tinkering about with stuff for fun but most of the time it was so we could get to work the next day and not have to walk or get the bus.
That spark reminds me of a dt50 I had in the 1980s... I eventually fitted a yz100 engine in it, leaving my friends confused how my bike went like a bat out of hell 🤣
Great video Martin. I used to have to turn the throttle all the way forward for the decompressor to work, the little handle on the left handlebar is the choke. Check the wire from the coil back into the magneto also clean up the faces of the coils inside the magento (one is for lights the other ignition) I had a raleigh runabout years ago with the same problem. Ii could be the coil in the magneto that's failed had to change mine years ago lol. Also Martin is there a engine shut off on the handlebars ? some were fitted with a kill switch. it may be faulty. Cheers, Jeff.
hi sir when u clean the points in any motor you must take them out of there place and run them accross a FINE grade oil stone i do and contacts come up shiney all a good result try it. Oh another tip if u brake a stud in a motor weld a washer on the stuck stud and then also then weld a nut on top of the washer give it a bit of time or so and undo it WELD INSIDE THE NUT AND OUTSIDE THE NUT
Martin, you are a great guy! I have one of these bikes (to go with many other basket case mopeds, motor bikes and quads), similar model, bought dirt cheap as a box of bits but now with the same problem you show here. I'll be delighted to see how you undoubtably will get this one up and running again, many thanks for sharing, from that old Geezer in Ireland.
Martin I love your style that is exactly what I do use what you have to hand at the time as long as it works it doesn’t matter I cal it using common sense
This is bringing back some memories, yes tinkering is what we did keeping these machines running, mine were used to get to work on and they served me well,I had them all Cazenave,Mobylette,Raleigh Runabout,Raleigh Wisp, later I had a Puch great machines and easy to maintain, that ignition system was pretty standard under Motorbecane licence, this could be the coil breaking down as 2v seems a bit low, perhaps degraded inside the coil ? points would pit up badly and I used a points file to dress them up every few weeks, biggest problem as these are two strokes by the way is the quality of oil, garage two stroke soon furred the plugs up and a bed would form in the spark plug, answer was Molydeium oil ( remember Molyslip ?) never had any problems after that,I think it was 20 to 1 ratio. Timing should be fairly easy as there is an indent mark when piston is at TDC. Great project I feel as if I am there with you in your workshop ! that will gleam when you are finished.
Sweet little moped , all there and still on the the database.. Result.. Do the magnets in the flywheel loose strength from standing? I seem to remember something simular with a friends lambretta and i think he had the flywheel remagnetised. You could run it with a 6v battery hot wired as a loss system to prove the motor.
Your Puff Puff engine is a Triang Puff Puff train locomotive. With original rubber wheels and Triang labels. Dimensions; 44 l x 22 h x 20 w cm. The front looks to have a round metal eye just a metal rod bent in a circle. The front is black and the stack and cab roof is black too.
Wow, I had the exactly same PUCH Maxi moped back in the days, a brand new 1976 model, bought at the local PUCH dealership, and even in the same color, dark purple!! Would've been nice if you had bought it and made a restoration series out of it, but I fully understand why you guys wouldn't wait for hours before it came up. And really great haul after all Martin - the Mobylette will make a good resto series too. 👍
A good way to stop a small engine turning over is to take out the plug and feed rope into the cylinder head it fills the cylinder and lockes it up, very entertaining video as usual thanks.
Again it looks like a great project! Glad you made it to the auction....are you going to keep as much of the original paint as possible? I think it looks great fun...
Great find Martin, after a deep clean , it just needs ' conserving ', far more interesting in ' oily rag ' state as most owners like to find them like that .You can join the National Autocycle Club and there are many social runs for these sort of bikes which are a real laugh and there are ones in your part of the world .Most owners tend to be ' hands on ' people like yourself who can fix them and sort them if you get a break down on the side of the road !.I see it is still registered still with the DVLA as last registered in February 1987 so a replacement log book at a cost of £25 should be no problem to make it road legal and now MOT exempt.A friend had a P6 Rover 2000- ANR 508K which is an old Leicester series.Good luck with it and hope to see it running soon .Love your videos and presentation !.
I think Sharon does not see what you see. She does not see what's under the rust ;-) But Martin, what about the ignition switch? It is certainly still in the circuit to the ignition coil. But maybe you have already checked this :-)
Just watched this video Martin at a little past midnight ........ I’ve a fiver says you have that wee bike purring like a kitten already !!! Great video, looking forward to seeing the next instalment. Always nice to see the bosslady make a guest appearance btw ! Take care. Tom
If I remember right , there's a capacitor in the pickup that shorts out and stops it sparking, you can't see it arcing because of the big pulley in the way.
You might want to check the air gaps on the magneto coils. It worked for me on my outboard motor, so it’s worth a look. Good luck anyway. Keep the videos coming.
Did you clock what the Puch Maxi went for? I've got a 72 I picked up for £300 back in 2016. Came from a house clearance and had been off the road since 1979. Great fun and lots of tuning parts available.
Love the vids your restorations are great but the trotter van is getting further away from completing that one was a great restration again love what you do ...dell
The 6 volt is only for the light. The ignition is a complete different circuit . It consists of the ignition coil, contact breaker, condenser and the coil near the points where the current is created. If you cleaned the points and check the points will open, useally it will give a spark. Sometimes the condenser is bad in old machines. When you are a little brave you can feel the wire that goes to the ignition coil and turn by hand the magnet (crankshaft)first slowly and little by little quicker. If you feel nothing at all, something inside is not o.k. Once i had a problem, when the engine was cold it runs, when hot it stopped. Reason was the condenser. When trying the ignition, always be shure the lights are off.
In which direction were spinning the engine? I always thought the rotated the direction the flywheel bolt came off. No doubt, it's already running. Cheers Ftom Fla.
You should be getting 6v from the magneto, but there may be an engine on/off switch at the handle bar. Also if the headlight or taillight are blown the engine will not run. There are some good wiring diagrams online, just do a quick search and I'm sure you'll find something. The 6v mopeds can be tricky. Good luck!
Have you had a chance to dig any deeper into the Motobecane? Once I have time I'm going to build myself a powder coat cabinet like you made. Perfect for moped restore/modify builds. I've been keeping an eye out for the right size cabinet, one big enough to hang a moped frame in. Maybe a tall, 4 drawer cabinet? Remove the drawers and fabricate a door, etc. I think that would work quite well.
hi mart, as others have rightly said there's the usual suspects for the lack of sparks (points, condenser, wiring, kill button/switch if fitted and primary/secondary coils) but i've seen it mentioned that the magneto flywheel can lose magnetism over time on french "peds" (mobylette, motobecane, peugeot etc.) which would seem to tie in with your low voltage readings, dunno what a proper test you could do to test this but a possible maybe to put the voltmeter (ac) to the lighting coil wires then turn the engine over and get some readings from there and compare as that circuit would definitely need the better part of 6V even at low speeds.
@@retrorestore that's good, is the mechanism in the cab of the puff, puff toy train a sort of bellows intended to make a chuffing sound as the train is pulled along?
Simple solution to hold a crank still on a 2 stroke or a 4 is to feed a length of thin cord in to the cylinder and rotate the engine in the desired direction and it locks solid.
Love yer channel ! - One thing ive never understood is that you erath for a spark to a machine that has rubber tyres ??? Martin can you answer that please or anyone else ? Id really like an answer ( Or is it just me LOL ) Thanks for the vid BIG M
May need a battery to provide the voltage to help boost the spark maybe.... also how do you turn off the engine? Maybe the earth kills the power by grounding the engine so there's a switch somewhere. I'm rusty with 2stroke engine's as it's about 30 years since I played with one in a bike. My strimmer breaks my heart trying to start it and the plug is very sensitive.... I remember a bike I had was a bad starter until I got a new battery. A battery was expensive then and we were skint.
This auction was run by bells the estate agents. Many Estate agents run auctions so check out their websites as well as local auction rooms where you live.
Nice looking moped. You will not get an accurate measurement of the voltage with the meter as it measures RMS voltage assuming normal AC. Magneto ignition only produces a momentary voltage spike so 2 volts RMS could be all you need. If you really wanted to know you would need an oscilloscope.
