The Lincoln Highway was one of the first cross-country routes, going from Times Square to San Francisco. Many sections of the Lincoln Highway can still be found across the country.
Thank you Russ- Be Safe. I recognized Hanover and where I used to work. Gettysburg is a second home to me- I did reenacting on the battlefield and in town. Loved the ghost tours and the Farnsworth House. I loved going to the EIsenhower Farm for WWII reenactment weekend the middle of September. The field in front of the house was full of WWII vehicles and people in uniforms and period attire. They had a homefront display. I loved visiting Mamie's house. It was a page from the '50's. I have been spoiled by growing up in PA.
While in Hanover, Russ, I hope you stopped off at the factory to load up on chips and pretzels for snacking when on the highways and byways. The Eisenhower Farm was most tranquil, quiet. Very restive.
Beautiful Russ...Gettysburg, Lincoln, plus Eisenhower....Now my Grandmother and I loved that kind of stuff....So much history. I have to say, it thrilled me somehow to see Eisenhower house, and property. Grandma after the war use to listen to him I guess it gave her hope for some kind of future. Thank you Russ...That shows constantly show us how lucky we are to have such neighbours as Lincoln, And Eisenhower....Two great Gentlemen...Gee that rain needs to leave. Have you a cloud over your head Russ??? LOL So much history in Pennsylvania...I do hope it all continues. We love going on trips with you Russ, as they are so very interesting...Thank you dear friend for keeping us partially sane We look forward when all vaccinations are done and we are all safe, especially our dear families. Thank you so much Russ...Carolyn and Colin Hogarth from B.C. Canada Osoyoos...We are watching always...Hugs to our whole group on this channel....
The old desert rat leaves the parched and dry southwest and finds out where all the rain ends up: In the East!!! I apply that to myself as well. I moved from the desert of S. California to work here 15 years ago. I still have weather shock!! Rain and humidity in summer, snow and ice in winter!! Love the series Russ. Thank you!
My brother lives in PA and loves it. The rain is a good thing Russ I remember in my younger days walking the streets of North Hollywood, CA, and Down Town L.A. hearing my shoes sticking to the very dirty sidewalks, and now with all the homeless, it's even worse. Just look at how clean the streets are in PA. Take care, Mike
German principals are strong in the region and things are to be in their place and tidy. Now I have lived away from there for a couple of decades, but I am still the only neighbor on my block here in SoCal that sweeps in my alley.
Always felt at home in Pennsylvania even though we never lived there. Been to almost every part of the state for business or pleasure and love the people, diners, parks, and scenery. Nice video Russ. Thanks.
Thanks Russ! Great videos. Will the rain follow you all the way back to home base? Hope not. There is so much history out east. Looking forward to your next stops.
Another great video. Beautiful old homes, small towns. Neat stop the Eisenhower farm. Definitely be interested in stopping by the 911 tribute site. Enjoyed. 😊👍
Russ, you drove right by my apartment on Carlisle st also RT 94 on your way to rt 30 and toward Gettysburg. Drove hundreds of miles in that area and all the way to Harrisburg the state capitol. The whole area was where i have lived. Traveled over half the state at least including the Poconos and more, Glad you liked the area it has been a nice place to live. Wow so cool you were here.
I’m glad you mentioned The Lincoln Highway (US 30) that is older and longer than Route 66. Since 1913, this transcontinental highway route is over 3000 miles from New York Times Square to San Francisco. In 2021, Lincoln Hwy is 108 years old. (As a Hwy 66 fan, I know Route 66 won’t celebrate its centennial until 2026.)
2:16 - oddly, old towns and homes kept very good records.."who lived here before?" City hall can tell you, and the town historian can give you more data. That's how "longitudinal living" works.
Fort Ligonier, interesting history, a journey back into the 18th century. Fort Duquesne at the Point of Three Rivers, still has the trenches you can walk through. The Inclines on Mt. Washington, have a unique history back before bridges, or tunnels. The Steel City history will not disappoint. The Frank Lloyd Wright home Fallingwater in Mill Run, Pa., Just thought I'd share some FYI. Centralia, Pa. is a town that has a mining fire still burning to this day.
US 15 from Rochester NY was decommissioned to the Pennsylvania state border in the late sixties or early seventies with I 380 being completed. The old sections of US 15 being bypassed by the four lane hyway. I have not been that way since Dec.1977. Plenty of changes since then. Appreciate your videos on Gettysburg.
👍 Eisenhower, Five-Star Ranked General of the Army during WW2 whom later became the 34th President of the United States. Also the President that ended the Korean War the same year he was sworn into the office in 1953.
I would love to have toured the Eisenhauer house. Maybe someday soon that will be possible. (I'm surprised they changed the spelling, but I think a lot of people would have trouble pronouncing "Eisenhauer') What a beautiful part of the country! It's hard to believe that this place is famous mostly for all the thousands of people who died there. Thanks again, Russ, for bringing us along!
My stomping grounds as a kid - School field trips every year to Gettysburg and or Hershey during grade school. I grew up in a home built in 1850 - beautiful brick Georgian style home that still had its slate roof. The style was like many you drove past in the town of Gettysburg - but ours was out in the country on US Rt 11`near a LITTLE town called Newville. Our high school played Gettysburg in sports. Rt 11 through Cumberland Co, PA has towns every 11 miles, as that was the normal distance people travelled each day. I never looked, but now I wonder if that spacing of the towns is the case all the way from the top of USA to the bottom of USA that US Rt 11 runs? One thing about those old houses - they sure made the workmen swear that were building anything in them! So crooked and so charming!! Oh, just recalled, mother wanted a clothes dryer vent put in and the workman agreed to put that in (laundry room on first floor - not in basement). Oh yes, he was swearing on that assignment too - the brick wall was 14" thick! That may be why they are still standing. That Eisenhower bank barn was larger than any I have ever seen.
Hey Russ, I heard you say you are heading to Ohio. I don't know which parts you are going to but if you are near Dayton and have time go the National Air & Space museum. It is a full days viewing but admission is free. The volunteers that work there are full of info and very friendly. My favorite exhibit is the Air Force 1 planes, so much history. If you are farther south swing by Serpent Mound. It's a beautiful little park with a walk way around the mound which is I believe 1/4 mile long. There is a little museum/ gift show with a lot of info on the native Americans that constructed the mound. Safe travels.
Guess what Russ ? It rains A LOT here in the east. Which is why my plans call for relocation to the west. Occasional rain is nice; but raining all the time gets old !! See ya out there !!
15:31 - thoe young bucks were either on the track team or the long distance running team. Me, I'm i'm running i'm either being chased or it's raining free beer HA!
Nice and cool sir but unfortunately the visitors site is closed little bit disappointment anyway the journey continues and one more thing sir when u r into Ohio please visit and show us the hell town ohio it was nice place with abandoned houses and old barn👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤
Hi Russ I'm not sure where you are heading in Ohio. If you are in the Dayton,OH. area you must stop at Wright Patterson Air Force Museum. And guess what it's a freebie.
Deed searches can be done at county courthouses. just like lawyers do when property is bought and sold. anyone can research their property. each deed tells you where the previous deed was recorded (which recorder book and page number). Fun to do if you really want to know who owned your property before. And Russ, it RAINS in Pennsylvania. Why do you think everything is so green and blooming? And why grass has to be mowed every 4 to 5 days.
The Lincoln Highway was one of the first cross-country routes, going from Times Square to San Francisco. Many sections of the Lincoln Highway can still be found across the country.
13:19 - that walkway is probably shredded up tires, etc. it's also called "playground mulch" - doesn't lose it's color, very durable, pest resistant.
That's what we were thinking, too.

The homes & buildings are lovely.
Everything looks so clean.
(No tagging/graffiti/trash)

Russ, greetings from WV. You never disappoint. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I feel like I'm on vacation as well. Safe travels!

What a place to spread out
Russ, you're gonna be having those Pennsylvania wet dreams later in the year out west in the deserts!! Specially back home in Quartzite! Love the vid!
You need to come back to AZ we need the rain.

Great traveling with you! Have you ever been to Put n Bay? Some pretty good history there too.
I don't remember my first visit to Gettysburg. I was born there. Mom said she could look out the window of her hospital room & see the battlefield.
I was going to suggest Flight 93 to you. I live kinda close to that. Also suggest the Lincoln Highway experience museum in near Ligonier, PA.
If you come through central Indiana check out Parke County. We have 31 Covered Bridges throughout our country.
Hey Russ, great series.

In 1960 I stayed in the farm next door to Eisenhower's farm. It was the battle field hospital renovated into a family estate.
Russ, If you come through Mansfield, OH on 30, breakfast is on me.
I would love to have toured the Eisenhauer house. Maybe someday soon that will be possible. (I'm surprised they changed the spelling, but I think a lot of people would have trouble pronouncing "Eisenhauer')

How far are you from Erie,Pa
????? There is a building called Steinbarth Ind. Belonged to my 2 great uncles. Wondering if you can find it.
Hey Russ can you do me make video about sach covered bridge ?
almost as cool as Quartsite.
Russ the RVer TV historian
It pays to have an Eisenhower Park Ranger.
Wish you could eliminate the bounce when you are walking, but big fan either way.
Last road trip you had to deal with smoke. Could you stay out of North Dakota in July. HaHa.
