  • See how to paint a watercolor of baking sourdough bread! This video weaves together how a grandmother baking sourdough bread inspired a watercolor painting. By showing and explaining the painting process, the artist comes to see that the bread is much more that just a loaf of bread. Demo led by Art Prof Clara Lieu.

    I was nearly in tears at the end. This painting is not just about love and family. This painting is about the bread fairy and her journey of discovery through learning to make this bread. It is about her love of beauty; her patterned dish ware, her careful arrangement of flowers, everything she does is meticulous. Each item she owns has a story because that is what is important; not the objects themselves, but the lives that have lived around them. Your Oma and I are kindred spirits. My bread journey has been ongoing for 30 years. (I am sadly now allergic to gluten but I still bake for my husband and friends and have developed a pretty decent gluten free sourdough (sigh, not the same)). Every dish in my house is also patterned. They represent the joy of meals shared with my husband, so many meals over 36 years. I had to laugh, but I have the same pom pom trivets and I love them so much. I said in a comment about the pastel painting of the jug and the glasses that I think the bread fairy is your muse. Keep travelling this path, it's leading you somewhere special.

    Beautiful rendering, with a lot of feeling. My favorite watercolorist is Winslow Homer, who painted quite boldly and without many layers (as far as I can tell), but another painter from the same period, Thomas Eakins, was incredibly fussy and still managed to create very unified and beautiful paintings, although they must have taken a lot longer than Homer’s. Fine and inspiring work on this. Thanks for sharing. My wife, who is German, also makes this bread (and calls her grandmother Oma).

    Quality x1000. Everything about it enhanced it. Even she brief clip of someone handheld filming you paint. This video was so rich and layered. Can i coin the word “docuturial”? Haha. Love to see more stories about something really special in your lives that you go ahead and paint/draw.
    Glad you still have the painting. Should become a family heirloom.
    Note: try olive oil and dukkah on that bread. Trust me on this.
    Another note: you prolly already know but flick some water on the bread and mike it (or put it in the oven)when the bread is drying. The steam brings it back to life.

    Wonderful. I really very much enjoyed this, more so because I have a son who has explored making this type of bread, he is an extremely good baker entirely self taught! And there are many stories attached to his bread too. (Unbeknown to me a fridge was abandoned for a year because he had forgotten his starter and was scared to look inside!). He is the cook in our household because I am disabled, and he won’t trust me with hot things… But also because I have really struggled with watercolour, I have loads of it, and can only really do anything
    I like thus far when I use some slightly moth eaten squirrel mops. So it was a delight to watch this and hear your take on water, layers, and watch you slowly build the detail and take it to where it needed to go. Using wet techniques the clarity gets lost so much earlier on, then things stop being workable. I really loved your finished piece, so enviable! Bread has to be one of the most difficult subjects of all.
    And to add to the wonder it was ALIVE! I know thanks also have to go to the Bread Fairy, who inspired this….

    I am wondering if you've ever tried the Saunders and Waterford block? If you have I'd love to hear your thoughts. I really love the story behind the paintings. It makes them come alive. I've experienced you interviewing people and doing these narrations. I don't know if you realize that you are exceptionally good at both! This style of video always has me captivated ❤️ Have you ever considered creating art documentaries or interviewing artists in a regular segment? There are far to few amazing art docs out there.

    sometimes i think about how i loved watercolor as an elementary student because it was more forgiving than markers and color pencils. and composition was easy because I just wanted to make the same things usually.

    which brand do you recommend for watercolor sumi brush? :)

    • @artprof
      @artprof  11 місяців тому +1

      I don't have any loyalty to a specific brand or type of sumi brush! Just don't get one of the super cheap ones, as the bristles don't come together well. (they spread out when wet) -Prof Lieu

      @@artprof I did see it on the wall but wasn’t sure who’s wall 😄 This painting should tell you loud and clear that watercolour is no longer your nemesis, it is now your lifelong friend. Everything came together for you in this work, I feel it was a moment of watercolour clarity for sure. I hope you work more with watercolour Prof Lieu!

    I have a watercolor block of good paper but I'm truly not having luck cutting away sheet after sheet without scraping the newly exposed page in the process. I use a small paint mixing tool as carefully as possible but I never seem to do it without that damage 😔

    • @bluewren65
      @bluewren65 3 роки тому

      I feel your pain. I find that the problematic parts are as you round the corners. When you get to a corner, try lifting the paper as you work around the glued edge. That may help.

    Hey there if u have a very buckled up piece of paper or ever a heavily crinkled one, put in something protective (plastic, or something else) and put it under ur mattress (make sure u don't bend it while doing that, and it's as flat ws possible), the weight presses it down over a few days. And for the crinkles, pray to god i cannot help u
