  • The scale of last week's earthquake devastation in Turkey's Hatay is clear when drone footage from 2018 is compared with shots of the same locations filmed on Monday.
The destruction in Turkey could cost the government up to $84.1 billion, a business group said, while a government official put the figure at more than $50 billion.
The combined death toll in Turkey and neighbouring Syria the 7.8 magnitude quake rose above 37,000 and looked set to keep increasing while hopes of finding survivors in the rubble fade.

@@Patches_0001--- It's partly nature, but months before the quake many tenants reported cracks in the substandard apartments. Surveyors came and the government decided they needed to be fixed, but it was not enforced. Also a lot of short cuts were done in the building of these structures, the government knew they were substandard

@@Patches_0001 '''Cutting corners''' have cost thousands their lives. The government did not plan the earthquake, but they knew the risks, they knew the place was an earthquake zone, and decided the flaws needed addressing. The government just did not enforce the law. It happens all over the world. A few years ago an eight Storey factory building in Bangladesh collapsed killing thousands. The local government saw that the regulations were flouted, but were corrupt

very interesting drone video. I notice many trees still stand but many newer concrete buildings are flat.

trees are super strong. they got a huge root system to keep them stable and they're flexible like rubber almost and even a tiny tree can stop a speeding car. the tree is ok but the car is a twisted piece of junk. they can also withstand storms pretty easily. there's no weak links in trees like in many buildings where one tiny damaged part can make the whole building collapse, especially if it's poorly constructed

      Good point 👍
This looks very strange to me because the buildings do not shake like normal earthquakes. We see them just collapse as if they are being blown up from inside like a demolition.

I don't think this particular calamity would create a new political environment for a refugee migration in Western world.
The earthquake didn't affect the entire country, just ten cities and rest of the country, the economy and somewhat political stability is firm. People in south east where the disaster happened are definitely in trouble, hungry, cold and hurt, they surely will suffer while many die but as long as central authority is intact no illegal emigration would happen. There is no need for them to seek life out of the country while tens of thousands went to help voluntarily and hundreds of million dollars aided. Plus, government forces are in control. Not very helpful, but still they have the full control.
