My dad passed away in 2008. I was quite young then but I still remember him playing this exact song on Sunday mornings without fail. Oh how I miss you Tata.
me too, until my friend who's father passed on and left him with his jazz collection played the song ! after years of hearing it playing in different places
The song was written by Abdullah Ibrahim in honour of the now late journalist Mr. Michael Tshehla Phahlane who had distinguished himself as a jazz critic through his journalism career. It is said of Mr. Phahlane, "he wore his passion for this noble art on his sleeve and with his elegant but cheeky prose, championed its beauty and cause on the pages of the racy publication" (the Zonk, by which he was employed). Jazz introduced Mr. Phahlane to a young and lanky pianist from Cape Town (Ibrahim). Though Phahlane loved the shy musician’s efforts on the ivories, he never liked his name. So he gave his protégé a new identity - Dollar Brand. Phahlane reasoned that a 'dollar' was the world’s most powerful banknote at the time, and Ibrahim was destined for bigger things in the United States. And so, years later after Ibrahim went to the United States as an exile, he expressed his gratitude by recording "Bra Timing From Phomolong", a bluesy, meditative hymn that came straight from the soul of Soweto. Love it.
Thank you for that insight on what is in my view a masterpiece. I had the good fortune to attend a concert in New York back in 1978, Dollar Brand /Abdullah Ibrahim. Truly a magnificent concert, it changed me. I listen to AI every day, it soothes my soul.
My Father and Brother passed on within 5 months of each other. It's been difficult but these tunes brings back so many memories and it brings peace to my heart.
A true jazz masterpiece. The horns talk to my soul. Grew up with up with this music. Decades later, i listen and appreciate the sound. Thanks Oom for your wonderful music
This sing is respectful to the heritage and pain and the struggle that was had and still continues to be fought for the disenfranchised majority in Southern Africa
A nxa clever bra from Phomolong... got all street corners covered with his laaties running numbers for him...! What a tune to honor this Mchina/Fafi skelm timer!!!
The wonderful Carlos Ward plays the soulful alto sax solo. He was always great with Abdullah Ibrahim, and with Don Pullen too.
