  • Here I clarify that your Yamaha French horn is NOT missing any screw even if it looks like you are. Really! The thumb rotor is made to be reversible. Here is the demo and explanation.

Holy crap, my French Horn has been on the Bb setting this whole time. I've had this thing for a year and a half!

I used to play trombone, pitched in Bb, and the thumb trigger activated the F extension slide. When I took up horn I could not get used to the opposite function of the thumb trigger, so now I play on a hybrid Yamaha/Alexander horn with the thumb valve standing in Bb. Much easier for me.

Awesome. Glad that that set up works for you. A good reason to change it to Bb instead of F. Never though of players of different pitched instruments needing this. Makes sense.

Thank you for this tutorial video! Do you happen to know how to convert a Holton H279 to standing in B flat? The manufacturing website says this model has that capability, but the trigger arm is different from the Yamaha in this video. There are so few resources available on how to convert horns like this, so thank you!

Hmmmm. Please send me the link that said it was possible to do that. I have not personally done this for any Holton.

In uk they are usually set to Bb by default. For some reason most of our instruments here are Bb.

I will do a French horn restring video with an overhead, well thought out and showing the direction of stringing.

@@jimflys2 The Horn I was stringing was an earlier model of the one you were showing and the rotor itself was on the other end of the stack, and therefore the swing arm doubled back on the trigger. There are no videos of restringing that type of valve and I just happened across a video about something else where the camera panned across that very valve type. I froze the screen shot as was able to finally figured it out after much weeping and gnashing of teeth.
I hired a horn player 4 years ago and praised God that I would never have to string a horn again... and then this horn came in. She said she had never seen one, gave up, and handed it to me so she could go teach a lesson. I cried a little.
