Ultras took out a no-frills ground composition that was neglected in favor of skytoss. I can't help but feel like most 'toss players would have ruined that ultra comp with just a few forcefields.
Skytoss, like everything else in this SC2, was murdered by a no-skill-required blob of Corrupters and Vipers. Skyzerg is the lamest thing to happen to this game since broodlord spam was winning every game.
That said, the toss player had all the advantage and momentum until zerg (very slowly) hit a 5-base economy. Zerg kept growing, protoss did not. He flushed his advantage by durdling around while painfully slowly gathering his fleet, and he got out-macro'd.
For real tho i'm noob and i'm only recently interested in starcraft 2 , but is it me or is zerg way more played than other race at pro level ? Or is lowko favoring zerg replay ?
Haar Ho from what I’ve seen Protoss is the most played and consider most op on the general consensus. However in pro gameplay Korea mainly favors Zerg and since Korea is mainly dominating the pro scene. Lots of zerg
So is it like protoss easy to play good , easy to win with and then zerg better if you're really good and terran as jack of all trade ?
Haar Ho pretty much, zerg is the most adaptive and can change their entire style in short amount of time, which is a vital thing in a game like sc2 which is incredibly hard though. Protoss is strong troops that don’t require much micro, it’s just point and click, it’s also considered the easiest. Terran isn’t a jack per se but it’s considered to be the middle ground

This is exactly how I feel about it, especially after watching this. Zerg player got entirely obliterated by mass phoenix and then 1 zergling run by into ling drop just turned this game around.. honestly bull shit imo. I don't think it was the ultras that got it done tbh, though it was funny.
So basically the understanding at why Dark was able to go Ultralisk is actually pretty simple. The whole setup in aggression at the beginning is all about setting the game up in your favour. Basically trying to force your opponent to counter what you have, then knowing exactly how to counter their counter basically forcing them to waste resources on units that end up dying and, in the end, granting you the favour of larger numbers.
Dark didn't "respect" that, so to speak. Rather than produce a predictable counter that Her0 would "know" he would go and know how to go against, he instead went with a unit comp that Her0 didn't exactly have a response to. Yeah, Her0 could've gone for a base trade and likely have won, but he had no idea what was coming as he didn't scout it out early enough. In other words, rather than being the one forced to counter, Dark said "not today" and forced Her0 to have to make a counter instead. At the time Her0 already had a large supply of the previous units meaning the only way to switch would be to lose the precious resources that he had spent in trying to force the game into his favour.
Dark had basically canceled out what all of the beginning aggression was supposed to mean for the rest of the game. Again though, Her0 could've avoided this if he had scouted out the ultralisk cavern early on enough to see that there was research going on meaning that Ultras were coming, and could've made a big push or other and taken the game.
I'm not sure a base trade would work. Dark had way more harvesting bases, Hero basically had 1.
@@robertaylor9218 There's a reason I had stated that connected via comma with the fact that he didn't scout the ultra cavern soon enough. Truth be told though, really it would depend on who could kill what faster, as well as where they'll target. Basically, a base trade can go in enough ways to where the definite winner would never be completely clear unless it's just that much of a lead for one specific player. I also stated "*could've*" and "*likely*" for that reason of ambiguity to a base trade.
he's also invested in a lot of phoenixes, which aren't exactly great against ultras they can't lift and cannon fodder lings.
@@GameFuMaster Yeah, that's kinda of what I said. Rather than going the usual counter to what Her0 was doing, Dark went with Ultras, where Her0 wasn't able to provide a counter as he already had too many resources invested into the army of units he already had and couldn't switch to the correct counter. That army of units being incapable of countering Ultras.
Daniel Williamson TLDR he tricked Protoss into getting more air in preparation for his mass Corruptor finishing blow. Had he gone Corruptors earlier he’d kill a harassing force and not a maxed army and the game wouldn’t end.
It warms my heart to see Ultralisk sow terror in the heart of enemies once again.
Why doesn't anyone kill overlords? They're easy and you can supply block an opponent?

Hey Lowko, about the "Some of the best in the world"... so you say if someone is Top 10 in their race, you can say it can apply. I would say that, as a precedent, in US college football and basketball, the Top 25 teams are ranked by number. That is from a field that includes hundreds of schools. So to say that the top 30 players are among the best in the world at Starcraft 2 might actually be cutting the herd down too thin, considering the 10s of thousands of daily SC2 players. Just food for thought. Keep on with the casting, young man!

Considering the state of professional starcraft 2, they are only two possibilities : either zerg players are far better than the others, or zerg is simply OP.
I think it is a little bit of both. Zerg is the strongest race, but it requiters more skill to be played
zerg is OP & requires less skill.
In the grand scheme of things, leaving 4 Ultras on a sliver of health alive to rampage through your base is a bad idea.
Of course Dark would claim to be the best. He wouldnt recognize a non korean, even if they are the current world champion

Hey Lowko! I have a question, I've followed yourhotkey tutorial about cameras, the shift-f1 to f4 and f1-f4 to jump on those locations, but I'm having problem when it comes to late game and I have 5 or six bases, I can only go to 4 bases immediately, is it much better to go for base camera or camera locations? What do you often use when injecting the hatcheries?
Should have built more spore crawlers in the early game when getting harrassed by Phoenix swarm. The resources lost against those phoenixes were far more than if he had built several more spore crawlers to protect himself. Multiple Queens are too slow and cannot react to that many phoenixes. I don't know why players always insist on never using enough static defense and then get their mineral line devastated by repeated attacks.
Dark built a whole lot of spore crawlers. They did a great job of zoning the phoenixes. You can really see their effectiveness at 7:55.
Yes, the phoenixes still did TONS of damage, but not as much as they could have.

So the Ultras were actually built for only a very short period of time.
Dark wanted them for that one engagement, for the very specific purpose of surprising herO and killing that 4th base, and critically, killing all the high templar. Setting himself up to have a massive advantage for the follow-up fight he knew would happen in a few minutes of air vs air.
I found out my self the Ultras with corruptors are pretty good vs skytoss. Like my friend copied that kind of build from a Pro Protoss player where u get skytoss plus high Templars. If I went hydras or corruptors I'd lose but Ultras n corruptors r both pretty tanky so u do the math :'v xd
Well, if Hero could place some High templars at home as defense to zerglings, it would be much better for him.
But I believe it is really hard to control an army like that. Really a well played game by Dark.

The Ultra won the game because they killed the ground units that could have counter the corrupters and the queens. They were tanky enouth to blast through their own counter (the flying units) when doing so. Because herO didn't focus them with his tempus, and let a tempus vs corrupter duel happen without the necessary support from the high templars, he lost the whole fight.
That many phoenix killing all those drones, the zerg needs to put 2-3 spore crawlers right away. Zerg is the best for static air defense because you can move those spore crawlers later in the game. Then you got the larva to make units to go counter attack.
this "counter" of the zerg is actualy pretty smart: rather than trying to directly counter the oponents army emediatly, he went for counter aggression. he used ultras to take out the high templar, a very vital unit for the protos because with their psy-storms they control the enemy army movement and keep them away. with the high templar gone, zerg could simply attack without fear of storms. a core of ultras easily charges through the psystorm, get close and shut them down before getting downed themselfs and then go on and charge into the base and deal a ton of dmg.
i am very curious if we will see ultras now more often. i would like it a lot.
One thing I think people are underestimating is the new speed boost on the ultralisks. Look at 18:24. Those two ultralisks would have been so easily picked off normally but instead they are just fast enough to get away.

Ultra vs air is indeed strange, unless it’s mass carriers. Back in the day, and even now less commonly, ultra armor is my answer to a million interceptors. It’s hilarious to just walk by a massed our air army because you have the armor to do so.
wouldn't void rays counter all of that? they are great against corruptors, losing some to viper pulls isn't that big of a deal and they can be spammed a lot easier than tempests.

Amazing mass phoenix? Amazing ultralisk play? Or maybe:
- Dark kept the mass phoenix from doing too much damage using spores and queens
- phoenix does little against creep spread
- this makes for a situation where Protoss doesn't want to move out and go deep on creep
- this allows Zerg to make more drones, less army, and still be fine economically
- so fine indeed that Dark was at an income advantage for a good 6 minutes before ultras even started doing anything
- this allowed him to simply make more stuff
- the creep spread also allowed him to bring the queens along and give him anti air
- more stuff = win
Zerg played like terran, except zerg has good units so it actually works. Great match to watch. I wish zerg would do this kinda stuff more.
The Corrupters should be nerfed or at least they should evolve from Mutalisk... Compared to Vikings or Phoenixes, even Void Rays it is too powerful unit. It is a late game unit. Anti air of the zerg should be first Mutas, then to evolve in corruptors or something like devourers, same for Brood Lords, like it was in Brood War.

So, top 10 toss, terran, zerg. And Rnd?
So taking a look at that moment multiple times, basically Ultras to hunt down High Templar with Ling escort swarming what they can, and few Corruptors and Queens to occupy the air units. High Templar and ground Protoss are pretty much down while air units are still occupied with the Zerg AA, while remaining Ultras deal with that base without much resistance. Plus there were only like 3 Immortals engaging the Ultras at the time, so it didn't seem like enough anti-Ultra damage going on with the air units focusing on the Zerg AA.
With creative stuff like that, I'm interested to see how much further the meta can evolve over time.
Lowko - If you could humor us and do some more view submitted matches we would enjoy that. Also BTW the reason cannons and voids are common in lower level Protoss is because they are easier to micro than say Phoenix and Stalkers. Thanks!
