From all the workshops in the festival, this time Laurent & Adeline classes were the most eye opening for me.
Of course I loved classes with Jojo & Mickaela, Albir and Donald Wilson, but man - this time Laurent & Adeline truly outdid themselves.
Previous months I’ve been attending their classes in various festivals and already then they kept the classes challenging with focus on musicality.
But it was nothing like this.
I think the reason why their workshops were so powerful was because there were 3 PART WORKSHOPS for musicality.
TO BE MUSICAL: PART 1
Focus was on counting the music (1-8) - change something in your dance on every count 1. Then change something when music changes - usually every 16 beats ( 2-8 counts).
Even a little change like going from open to close position is a clear change.
So this was the entry to the musicality.
For ladies super cool thing was when Adeline explained how for ladies the most important thing is to hear the music.
But then even more important is to try to understand what instrument your LEADER is dancing to.
Then she gave an idea how you can be musical even when you are following. What’s the one body part that is 99% of the times free?
Your head! Take the music with little head turns or nods! It’s awesome!
TO BE MUSICAL: PART 2
This class focused on dancing to specific instrument - like piano and isolating out everything else.
A bit hard to explain verbally 😃
TO BE MUSICAL: PART 3
This was my favorite class. Laurent explained how vocal, voice is the same instrument and you can dance to it even if you dont understand the language.
He showed an example with the same song in english and then in french. Since the words and singing speed was almost the same dancing didn’t change.
He showed how to dance to the basic beat and then take the last word from the vocal as an accent to a great effect.
Wow, new world opened to me.
Now my most favorite exercise of the week is to watch one video - take this one - and try to copy identically the musicality that Laurent is dancing to.
If he takes last word in the vocal as accent - I do the same.
If he does power turn on count 1 - I do the same.
At first I resisted myself from this kind of copying exercise. But now I regret I didnt do it sooner.
Try it:
Watch this same video 3 times - count the music, watch what accents Laurent takes on what count in music.
Then try to replicate it.
Rewatch the video if needed.
I can guarantee you - your musicality will improve.
P.S. I had an idea of showing this and other kind of exercises in video, let me know if anything like that would be interesting.
Maybe it’s just cool in my head and you’ll say: “Too much, bro” 😀

This festival was rated by some people as the top kizomba festival of the year 2016, so I went to check it out!
While there were some little flaws - you could feel it’s the TOP TOP quality festival. It’s huge event with non-stop dancing - seemed similar to craziness with Rovinj 😃
Top DJ’s, great floor, best kizomba instructors and almost 2,000 people! Only challenge was to find and dance to all your friends, because it was that huge!
But all the best dancers were there… Went home super inspired. Laurent & Adeline three musicality workshops did it for me this time, top quality classes.
