- Celebrating the release of the new deluxe edition of ‘Scarecrow,’ John Mellencamp discusses getting the band ready to record the album. Famously, he asked his group to learn around 100 different songs from the 1960s to get into the frame of mind required to make ‘Scarecrow’ work. The result was one of Mellencamp’s most beloved albums.

I knew who John Cougar was, and really liked many of his songs.. after hearing a little off his new album Scarecrow on the radio.. I actually went and bought it the day it came out.. I remember taking the album out of the sleeve and putting it on the turntable.. then putting headphones on and started the album.. I was reading the lyrics off of the back cover as the sings played.. about 3 or 4 songs in, I stopped for a minute, thinking man, this guy looks at life just like I do.. I started listening again and I loved the whole album.. I notice the song playing in the background was my favorite song off the album .. Minutes to Memories.. he fell asleep with his head against the window, an honest man’s pillow is his piece of mind.. that line has been a staple of my life ever since
One album to choose. This would probably still be the one. Even this Many years later
Definitely in my top 10 favorite albums of all time...maybe top 5. A timeless classic..rock on, John! 👍😎
At 52 I still love this album. But how I loved it at (maybe) 15 is a mystery. Absolutely brilliant album.
This is Rad. Thanks. Love you JM
I read Kenny Aronoff’s book and he verified what JM said about him requiring the band to learn lots of classic songs while he wrote. They were ready to deliver.
John Mellencamp, you are the muse and cause of my unconventional, global nomadic life. Your songs that went headtohead with Convention were so influential in my decisions after divorce and my life has been epic since. Thank you. I love ALL your albums, but I played Scarecrow on loop, driving my ex crazy. It was a salute to the Mid-west, where I'm from. Looking forward to the June 2 release of Orpheus Descending.
Smoking and cursing......gotta love JCM. Rock on!
Voice has changed with packs a day for 30 years.
He learned nothing after his heart attack and sounds like crap now. Used to be one of my faves, not anymore. 😅😅
I wish I hadn't clicked... those fucking cigarettes.
