Ludwig van Beethoven has been quoted as saying that Music is the mediator between the life of the mind and the life of the senses. These words can be dedicated to Ivan Palantay, the first professional Mari composer. He is the father of Mari classical music and the first Mari classical composer to find recognition the world over. His works are based on century-old Mari folk music traditions, were a new chapter in Mari musical arts. The memory of this great composer burns bright among the Mari; the impetus he gave to the of Mari music is not forgotten. In his house, which today is a museum, holds his musical instruments, manuscripts, household items, furniture, and other personal items were carefully preserved. A street in Yoshkar-Ola bears his name. In 1990, a monument of Ivan Palantay was erected in Yoshkar-Ola, and in 1993, the government of the Marl El Republic established the Ivan Palantay State Prize in the field of music and folk arts. Its recipients keep the memory of this composer, and of his service to the Mari people, alive.
