Excerpts from Symphony No. 9
MUSIC: Ludwig van Beethoven
TEXT: Friedrich Schiller
TRANSLATION: Henry G. Chapman
The choral finale of Beethoven’s epic Symphony No. 9, composed in 1824, was a revolutionary moment that fundamentally transformed the culture of post-Napoleonic Europe. Beethoven had for some time wanted to set Friedrich Schiller’s poem about joy and brotherhood, and this symphony, which marks a symbolic turn from the old rules and systems, was the perfect opportunity. In this finale, the melody-an intentionally simple, folksy tune-is transformed through a series of variations into a climactic tour de force of musical and philosophical power. The excerpts here are taken from three intact sections
of the entire movement.
Lyrics:
GERMAN
Freude, schöner
Götterfunken,
Tochter aus Elysium!
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, Dein Heiligtum.
Deine Zauber binden wieder,
Was die Mode streng geteilt,
Alle Menschen
werden Brüder,
Wo Dein sanfter Flügel weilt.
Seid umschlungen,
Millionen!
Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
Brüder, über’m Sternenzelt
Muss ein lieber Vater wohnen.
ENGLISH
Joy, thou spark of God so radiant,
Daughter of Elysium!
Teemed with fire, divine immortal,
We invade thy halidom!
Let thy magic bring together
All whom earthborn laws divide;
All mankind shall be as brothers,
‘Neath thy tender wings and wide.
Love t’ward countless millions swelling,
Wafts a kiss to all the world!
Brothers! O’er yon stars unfurled,
Some kind Father has his dwelling!

Imposible No Emocionarse. Precioso Todo
Awesome performance!
Was this the same choir who performed this version of Ode to Joy at Atlanta 1996 opening ceremony?
Choir fabulous, intro too long.
Beethoven wrote a lot more than this
I completely agree with McIntyre's statement; over half of the devoted to the introductory, it's good, but the singing is better.
Thanks for these comments. I just skipped ahead.
You all can skip to 2:50, if anyone wants to get to the singing.
Imagine your reaction if they played the whole symphony.
In the full symphony, there's nearly an hour of instrumental music before this part. You know you can skip ahead in the video though, right?
