I bought a new ms 171, today. I passed on the HP Ultra, because I hate that dirty oil. It will load your saws up with ash in a heartbeat. I never have warranty problems, so the extra year warranty was not a consideration. I had them fill it with my standard brew, Stihl HP @45:1 and their Woodcutter bar oil, which is what I use, anyway. I now have almost a tank on it and it runs and cranks, fine. I never cut with a new saw until it has, at least, three tanks of gas through it, which will be a few days down the road.
hello from northern Ireland man! i have owned one of these little saws for nearly 5 years now and i have cut down and bucked up thousands of small hard wood trees mainly ash and i must say the 171 if you keep her clean and replace your air filters she will do you well man i have never had a problem and i use the thing steady if you have a good sharp chain it amazes me how quick they cut for such a small saw you take care man keep doin what your doin brother! ✌ &❤🌲🌲🌴🌴
Appreciate the timely video. Morning paper had the ms 170 on sale for $160 then saw the ma 171 and was wondering the difference. Good video and helpful hints.
I like the conventional chain adjustment also. My MS180C has the toolless adjuster. It works OK but it seems like more of a gadget and I find the conventional adjuster easier to get the chain tension right with. I got mine from a neighbor's yard sale for about 60 bucks though, so no complaints.
Just got one. U get what you pay for. Not impressed with the power or stuff clogging inside the chain sprocket. But it starts easy and does get the job done
Love my craftsman 20" . its my go to saw. Throw it away dirty and it starts right up the next time. Just use premix and keep a good gap on the spark...

Ed Hlavaty mine leaks bar oil. It’s brand new too smh
Yours is easy to start? Mine is an absolute pain to cold start and has been that way since the first day.
I was wondering why you bought a craftsman saw
someone gave me the craftsman saw. i fixed it up and started using it and realized that its a pile of junk. i'm still trying to sell it.

Still waiting for an update on your truck.
Haven't been able to work on the F150 lately. Super busy at work plus taking care of other things at the moment.
Have you tried MS 181 or 180 to compare them? Which one is better?
I haven't. I now run the 171 and an old 034AV
Hows it holding up? I like the small stihls i have a couple
Holding up just fine. Upgraded it to the standard Rollomatic E bar and a Picco Super full chisel chain and it rips!
You can't compare those saws. Sthil is king.
How about the ms 181?
My Stihl dealer didn't have a 181. I now also have an MS250 so I'm all set.
I couldn’t pay attention, voice was too high pitched, and I kept wondering if it was a child giving a review.
