Masking fluid does not protect the paper underneath when you are doing watercolors. Masking fluid is used to keep watercolor paints ect... off the parts of the paper where it is applied instead.

I love Molly Harrison’s illustrations but the paper in the books are so difficult to color. My workaround is to take a photo of the illustration, use a photo editing app to lighten the grayscale then print onto mixed media paper. I found the coloring process more enjoyable and I’m still able to see the grayscale shadows and highlights but they aren’t as overpowering. I look forward to seeing your colorings of these books!
