Wouldn't the G7X be better for vlogging because it is smaller? I also prefer the flip screen for vlogging. Canon loaned me a G7X for a few months. I loved it but it really should have way to plug in an external mic.
Thank you Ted. Another point that might be worth mentioning is that the stills quality is great. I have its little brother the G7X mark ii and the photos are indeed breathtaking
you know what? you were a major reason why i bought the g5x!!! thank you so much for the knowledge you share. i will try it tomorrow since i just got it today :D
Just how tall is the small policeman patrolling on the pier? It seems requirements differ in Coney Island! What I like about your podcasts is that you take risk. We know that you have at hand more powerful gear to make outstanding videos but you choose to explore some point and shoot cameras and exploit their efficiency in various situations. Your ‘follow up’ reviews shows how you care to comprehend and share the good and the bad about specific gears. Most people just do a quick review and do not bother using the manufacturer’s available options which makes them so distinctive. Loved the back-lit scenes at the end of the video. I appreciate your in-depth information.
I got the Camera, From what I found It does not have a normal time lapse mode. Only the star time lapse (with a few options being short, medium, long tail and star trial). Pretty annoying
after trying so hard to get the g7x mark ii but not being able to get it because I guess everyone has become g7x mark ii obsessed, I decided to look into the g5x and im way happier with this camera, thanks for the great video!
Great review - thanks for sharing Ted! Been thinking a lot about this camera lately, though I'm leaning towards picking up the new Panasonic GX85 in the coming weeks... just wish it had the same articulating screen as the GX5! Daydreaming about what it would be like if camera manufacturers made built-to-order options like Apple :)
I just want to add that there is two modes of image stabilization for video on this camera. When shooting video, it will "crop" some of the frame to make room for shake corrections which is processed by the camera itself. this is information in the frame that you are loosing. same with the "auto level" feature, that will also crop the image to keep the footage looking straight. to counter all of this, Disable the auto level feature, then go in to IS settings. Here you set the dynamic IS to low, this will now only use the mechanical IS in the camera itself.
Awesome episode! I enjoyed the Canon G5X review and recommendations. It was very interesting to follow the second half with a blog shot exclusively on the Canon G5X. Great footage and very cool blog. I wasn't aware of Eric's channel but I will check him out and subscribe.
Ted could you please share with us the details of camera and settings that you have used in this video shoot.....also tell about post processing treatments
Over a year later! I still really like what the G5X has to offer articulating screen nice for the pocket too since you can turn it screen into the body. Nice to have the evf and touch screen. That being said I went with the g7x Mii. And really like it!!
Nice review. I have the G5x and agree that it is an underrated camera, not only for vlogging, but for stills and street photography as well. However, another option might be the Canon G3x: Same 20 meg one inch sensor, a zoom range of 24-600, and both a mic jack and headphone jack for monitoring sound. Slap a little Rode Videomicro on the hot shoe, and you have the directional audio performance you're looking for. Only downside is no built-in EVF, but you can bundle it the optional Canon external EVF, and you have a pretty impressive kit.
So what is the difference between the g5x and the g7x and which is better just for vlogging? I use the panasonic gf7 right now and the lack of internal stabilisation is a no go
I watched your first g5x review about three times and was ultimately sold into buying the g5x! This is quite a nice follow up review! I hope you talked about the camera's battery life. But overall, you made the most helpful video review on the g5x, thank you! Buttt, now, I am actually torn between the g5x and panasonic lumix lx100 bcuz of the 4/3 aps-c sensor on the latter as well as the overall image colour and sharpness. Any thoughts?
So essentially it's like the twin of the G7x that is considered more mature because it was born 30 minutes earlier. Or am I overlooking something major here?
2 years on do you think this still hold up. My daily is a 5D2, of course G5x can not match that but for a small travel camera would this still work well, I can't decide between this or the M50, I only do stills just a tad of video now and then.
Thanks Ted for the trip and update on the G5X and your thoughts on how you are finding it. The automatic image sharpening and its audio issues with ambient noise in crowded environments I think it would be a non runner for me but the video quality looked really well, and nice bit of editing man. I subbed Eric on the last video ♥ from Ireland Sean
Does it shoot 24fps in manual or some sort of programmable more, or is there only a dedicated cinema mode that allows for that? My Canon camcorder really has trouble with reds in the cinema mode, which is the only way for me to get 24fps. They turn out all orangey.
I want to purchase a vlogging camera and I'm not sure what to get. I would like a great quality camera. I would really like to have the option of adding an external mic to the camera. What do you recommend? A point and shoot or something like the Canon t6i.
Hey Ted, really enjoy your videos, however I still feel like I need help on what compact camera to buy. I'm going travelling for about 6-8 months next year and I really wanna get a decent but affordable vlog style camera to document my travels. I'm super confused on what best camera to get!! I have a budget of around £500/£600 (not sure what that is in USD)! I've been contemplating the canon g7x ii but I'm super new to the camera industry! What would you recommend?
I also miss the jack for an external mic - but the "rest" of the G5x is awesome. Maybe they should think about the possibility to use a Bluetooth-mic, if they don't want to add a mic-jack. The camera already works with wii/wlan
I have a couple of questions. 1. Can the g5x do time lapse without an omnimeter? other than the star feature 2. Does the autofocus make a clicking sound like the g7x 1? 3. There have been rumours of a g5x mk 11 was thinking of waiting to see if it has audio input and more video options...any idea? Thanks for the vlog.
Ted - thanks for your insight. I'm looking to upgrade my Sony NEX-5T, primarily filming vlogging-type videos (usually on a tripod). I was leaning towards the Sony A6300 (I already have lenses), which shoots in 4K but does not have a screen that flips around (unlike the Canon G5X). What are your thoughts, comparing the A6300 to the G5X?
Great video! I have a Canon G5x an seems a great option for videos =)=) Do you have any recommendation for easy edit ? I am a beginner and want to edit my videos but don't want to get overwhelmed.... thanks =)
I went and checked out Eric Rossi's video with his Sony 6300. While the video quality might have been better, I thought the G5X did a much better job with image stabilization, which made the video seem like it was better quality. It definitely makes it more enjoyable to watch. The MIC did a good job on the G5x as well. I'm impressed, especially considering its a "Point and shoot" :)
How are you liking the G7x? I picked up a Canon M3, with an adapter for my bigger L lenses. But my wife wanted something smaller and so far she really likes it. Our vlog is in the very premature stage, but so far, we like the camera. Only reason we didn't pick up the G7X was because I shoot weddings with a 5D MK III, and I liked the idea of using my lenses on the M3 if I ever wanted to.
Ah yes, the mic input was another reason I wanted the M3. I love the videos I see with the G7X, and I agree the focusing appears to be a bit slow sometimes. Same with our M3. But for the most part I think they both do a pretty decent job. Especially for vlogging. My wife probably would have liked the G7x because its a little smaller than the M3. But the M3 is small enough for her. Eventually I could see us getting something smaller as we get into vlogging more and more.
Ive recently purchased the G5x and wanted to know, How do I import my video files into davinci resolve? I wasn't sure which program to use if i had to convert the files. Thank you in advance!!!!
Thank you Ted. Based on this review, I bought the Canon G5X. Here is my review and included a shoutout in the video too: ua-cam.com/video/0evV8U640ME/v-deo.html
I am almost frustated now. Canon G7x mark 2 is not available anywhere and I am left with only Samsung J7 prime for my upcoming trip. I am planning to buy a DSLR which I can use for youtube also in the coming years. Please suggest me the best DSLR between $1000 to $1500 which has proved great with phote and videos. I would be thankful!
Yamin Rashid They all have fast face detect auto focus during video. Version 4 adds eye detect. The video looks considerably better than the G5X despite the G5x looking like it uses the same Sony sensor? The RX100 iii includes an ND filter, and the version 4 of course has high bit rates, super slow mo, and 4k.
+orange42 The usability of the RX100 is really crap compare to any flip and touch screen camera. I have an RX100IV and while it's jammed with features it's the worst camera I ever had in terms of ergonomics/usability. I don't know what Sony was thinking when they designed their menu system and why did they leave out the touch screen from a $1000 premiumly priced premium compact. Luckily Nikon came out with the DL 24-85 so I can get rid of the RX100IV...
Hello, Great review! I just purchased this camera and I'm totally in over my head. I've never owned a digital camera. I purchased it to create high quality photos, content, and videos for my online business. The user guide is not helping much. Any suggestions on how I can get hands on help? Thanks!
Good review. It's between this and Fujifilm X70 for me. I prefer the look and colors of Fuji...but the IS, Zoom, Tilt Screen, Touch controls....sigh. Does anyone shoot video with the X70? I shoot lots of both.
NICE camera but it seems to not be so good in bright areas, a little washed out. thinking about the G7X or this cam now...but my iPhone 6 is really nice. I also have the canon XA10 which i adore, but it's not as small for run and gun.
it would be perfect if it has an external mic input..iwas ready to buy it but the mic input problem was stop me...unfortunately the input under the rubber is actually a terminal for a remote shutter release on the G5X. Thats a pitty because if tit has it could be the king of all the vlogging cameras...sorry for my english btw
I purchased the camera because of the great review you made. I wanted to ask, for the audio do you to certain edits on it? Eric brings a lot of passion to his channel. Like you. It's nice seeing you two collaborate.
+John Campbell thanks man, really appreciate that. It was totally awesome to meet Ted!
Wouldn't the G7X be better for vlogging because it is smaller? I also prefer the flip screen for vlogging. Canon loaned me a G7X for a few months. I loved it but it really should have way to plug in an external mic.
i really like the g7x

I appreciate your in-depth information.
Does the g5x have the built in time lapse video mode like the g7x mark ii? All I could find is "Star mode" when searching.
Did you find out the answer to this?
The Art of Photography please answer......
I got the Camera, From what I found It does not have a normal time lapse mode. Only the star time lapse (with a few options being short, medium, long tail and star trial). Pretty annoying

Just found you from Eric's channel, so awesome to see your line of videos as well. Weird I have not found you yet, but glad I did!
Picture looks great. What software do you use to edit videos? I assume that must make a difference also?
Thanks again Ted, amazing to meet. Like I said, it was an honor man. Thank you.
+Eric Rossi
Good to see you Eric, with Ted...two of my favorite UA-cam Photography guys.
Great review - thanks for sharing Ted! +Chris Prouse no kidding!
I've got the GX8 and I've no doubt the GX85 will be awesome ;)
Howie Mudge I want it now!! Haha, the mid-May release can't come soon enough! :)
Chris Prouse :) I'm thinking of picking one up myself purely for the better IS and no AA filter.

Do you filter your vlog video? Cause the color is beautiful
Been considering getting this. Been using a g7x for vlogs for quite a while. Is IQ about the same you think?
+Suck My Mod I think its significantly better, BUT the G7x Mark II comes out in June. You might want to see what that has to offer.
+The Art of Photography yeah very true. Decision decisions. Also thinking of going bigger and getting the 80d. Thanks for your help and videos!
LOVE the 80D! First part of this video is all 80D ;-) Check it out Matt… Now I need a Theorem ;-)

So essentially it's like the twin of the G7x that is considered more mature because it was born 30 minutes earlier. Or am I overlooking something major here?
can someone help me decide! rx100 v, g5x, g1x iii ?????
Can you do a tutorial on how to set up time lapse on G5x please
What settings where you shooting your vlog in? :D Great video btw
I am thinking of buying one for my work...
But I am getting the idea I should wait for the MK ii....
What do you think...??
it's a really great camera

do the windjammers mess with the sound?
dose it muffle your talking
I bought the G5X because of this video!!! Did not regret.
which lights have you used in this video?
Which camera is newer the G7x or G5x
I love my g5x too and sometimes I prefer using it over my older dslr

Did you remix this song? I really like it, but can't find it anywhere.
Do you put on screen protector on the touch screen? or it's better to leave it?
any hand strap recommendations for compacts?
Hiya there, really loved the vlog :D can you tell me what music was used at the start of the vlog and throughout it?
I want to purchase a vlogging camera and I'm not sure what to get. I would like a great quality camera. I would really like to have the option of adding an external mic to the camera. What do you recommend? A point and shoot or something like the Canon t6i.

Hi, great video's. Does the G5X shoot at 1080p @60 fps? The settings only seem to have it at 50 fps.
Thought I would prefer the s120 but the g9x is a big step up in image quality and even lighter which is excellent.
Which is better sony rx100 m4 or canon g5x?

Can my G5X be used as a webcam for Zoom on my MacBook Pro? Do I use the usb or cdmi output? Thanks for your help!
Hey Ted, in one of the videos you mentioned G5X has 24p recording however am not able to find it in the specs! Could you pls confirm?
On US models - Menu->Shoot7->Movie Quality
Debating on G7x or G5X for blogging pictures videos what’s the best choice ? What’s your opinion
Sir, I wanna get my first camera. Which one would you recommend, the canon g5x or the new g7x Mark 2? Thanks
Thank you Ted. Based on this review, I bought the Canon G5X. Here is my review and included a shoutout in the video too: ua-cam.com/video/0evV8U640ME/v-deo.html

Have you tried the RX100 or is this about price over quality?
I think it's about price mostly but I don't think the rx100 has autofocus during video so it's not good for vloggers

Do you think That this camera would be good for recording podcasts and make short films with this camera?
NICE camera but it seems to not be so good in bright areas, a little washed out. thinking about the G7X or this cam now...but my iPhone 6 is really nice. I also have the canon XA10 which i adore, but it's not as small for run and gun.
It use it everyday on my channel
how much is it ?
Anyone knows if the G5X has the time/date stamp?
Wow almost unusable audio! That's a deal breaker for any vlogger dude... :(
The only things is no mic in. :(
Hummmm? Ask the Magic Lantern folks to hack an external mic port.
it would be perfect if it has an external mic input..iwas ready to buy it but the mic input problem was stop me...unfortunately the input under the rubber is actually a terminal for a remote shutter release on the G5X. Thats a pitty because if tit has it could be the king of all the vlogging cameras...sorry for my english btw
Nikos Gogos i guess u could actually get a mic cable frm gopro. Go check it out
What's your thoughts on the G15?
I purchased the camera because of the great review you made. I wanted to ask, for the audio do you to certain edits on it?
I used the zoom h1 on the hot shoe but it makes the camera lose its advantage as a compact camera.
Any advice? :)
Thank you again for your reviews and for your very informative content
Does anyone know the soundtrack at 08:06?? Awsome review as always!
nope the samsung nx500 annihilates this canon. if u can get an nx500, u should. best apsc sensor and 4k vid. ive done a ton of pro work with it here in LA
The battery life though is terrible haha.
Hey Mate, Great Video, sold me on the camera! I have been tossing up between the G5X and the G7X ii. Does the G5x have the inbuilt time lapse featire like the G7X ii?
$750 on amazon
u rock!!!!!
Casey Neistat may have a different opinion.... lol
BEST!
Looks a great camera but 210 shots of battery life is a real deal breaker. Nice review btw.
the best vlogging tool is your phone
Does this camera have a good zoom? I love taking pictures but I dont know what specs mean
