- 📜 History of Saladin & the 3rd Crusade: Defending Jerusalem - And so we come to the negotiations between Saladin and Richard the Lionheart, where some of the best-known stories of the Crusades will play out. Starting with a mass execution of prisoners. Yikes. Saladin's luck begins to run low while Richard III shows himself to be a much better tactician and general that Saladin's previous enemies. But by the time the Crusaders are knocking on Jerusalem's door, Saladin realizes. He doesn't have to beat Richard. He just needs to outlast him.

And when he did govern his domain it was mostly lands in France and not England.
He never even was in England. He only was in French lands controlled by the English crown and couldn’t speak English.

I love when the crusaders get demoralized by their leader doing the right thing to make sure all of them don’t die
Crusaders were always seemingly dumber then the salahudins armies
They joined to take Jerusalem, they were a few miles from Jerusalem and they turned around. Those guys were the grunts, they didn’t understand the strategic magnitude, they just wanted to accomplish their goal.
@@SaceedAbul I wouldn’t say that, if you had been winning time and time again, and you and your mates think you’re going to win again, why would you retreat? We’ve been winning, why stop now? Especially when it was just in your grasp. It was more overconfidence then it was outright stupidity in my opinion.

Learning of Saladins shortcomings and weaknesses kinda made me like him more. He's not an undefeatable general like Alexander or Khalid ibn al Walid, in actuality he's kinda mediocre and that just makes him more human I guess?! He is not a legendary hero but a man who makes mistakes like the rest of us. And that makes his story even better because he is able to overcome all of that in his quest to unite the Muslims
I agree when you see people like khalid or Alexander you tend to look at them more like characters then people

You know that this is a plot tool EC always use to build up the story for the viewers, to come back and watch their videos, all of their own videos are build in this way to be less historically accurate and more dramatic bulid up for entertainment purposes.

saladin wouldve said conquer jerusalem if he was in richard's place because he knew the hearts of men although his generalship is questionable
I'm reminded of the various invasions of Russia that were ultimately repulsed in large part due to the invaders' inability to keep their forces properly supplied.
Lessons from history:
- Don't invade russia during the winter
- Don't split the crown
- Seriously, don't invade russia during the winter
@@DragoniteSpam Or just plain don't invade Russia. Charles, Napoleon, and Hitler all launched their invasions when it wasn't winter. Russia's so big, though, that winter is almost guaranteed to arrive before the invasion is over.
@@GeneralLuigiTBC Yeah, "winter" is pretty broadly-defined when you're trying to invade a place as big as Russia on foot
Accordingly to these invasions and using them as an example, whoever wants to launch one, should invade during the last months of winter.
@@GeneralLuigiTBC this higlighted the excellence of Mongol logistics and communication. Sure the Russians weren't united at that time, but the Mongol armies were thousands of miles away from central command.
Possibly an interesting "What if-" story right there. What if Saladin and Richard's negotiations were accepted, and Aladil (Pardon if misspelled) and Richard's sister were married, creating this different type of Jerusalem. Whether converting to Christianity for the husband or the wife converting to Islam is a question for further research, among many other things, but still worthy for a thought experiment.
Leave some honest thoughts. Maybe worth a story someday.
I don't know anything about Richard Sister, but I know his Little Brother from the Movie "Robin Hood"
@@ryunakazawa947 You *really* shouldn't base your perception of a historical figure from their depiction in movies... They're practically never accurate. I'm not saying they're always bad movies, sometimes they're great as entertainment products, but the history is almost always inaccurate

@@ryunakazawa947 There was no Godfrey in real life. Kingdom of Heaven is quite fictional. Balian was not a bastard and his father was named Barisan.
Saladin never really intended to go through with this. He was mainly stalling for time. Richard wasted a lot of time on the march. He wasn't as much of a general or politician either, compared to how good of a fighter he was. This allowed Saladin to completely scorch all the lands around Jerusalem and poison the wells.
Props to Salahudins bro. For being a homie the whole way through and not betraying him.

I mean if anything the crusades were a response force by islamic aggression. So while not innately peaceful it could be argued as more defensive then wanton aggression that most people seem to tie into it.

Saladin was a great ruler, but not a great general
Richard on the other hand, was a great general, but not a great ruler
Richard won the battle, Saladin won the war.
Sultan Saladin was elderly by that time. Its not surprising that he is less aggressive and energetic as he was in his youth when he could ride a horse and fight in a melee

Napoleon said of Saladin that he was a perfect example of a general who knew to exploit fully his superior resources and situation, rather than leave useless reserves and lose sight of his subordonates.
I wonder what kind of crazy alternate timeline would have come about if Richard & Saladin had managed to get that marriage alliance done?

@@aazizpratama2683 Not sure about Christian rule but Jews were never persecuted under Muslim rule. Infact they were more protected than christians under Muslim rule like in Moorish Spain, Ottoman Turkey, Ummayad and Abbassid caliphates
Saladin was such a nice guy to his enemies, it’s a shame that he never got that kindness in return.
That's why mamluk sultan Baibars was ruthless. He was a more capable Commander, no chivalry 😆, but he could beat both Mongols and crusaders.
@@hersefelik5002 I get your point but putting Umayyads and Abbasids doesn't support what you wanna say because they were out there far stronger than other realms around them. Same applies to the Ottomans, all those were on the offensive. While mamluks were on the defensive position because they inherited a stretched empire with powerful enemies.

Those were standard rules of medieval warfare: Pay the ransom, or the captor can kill the hostages (or do whatever they wanted). Barbaric times, but some armies didn't even offer ransom, they just made mountains of the skulls and moved on.

Hmmm, executing prisoners of war in front of an army you're trying to beat is a sure fire way to have every one of the enemy soldiers fight to the last breath instead of surrendering and preserving your forces.

arrows are usually ineffective against armored knights as long as their horses are armored too(ie that was how england defeated france in the hundred years war along with the help of terrain)
