    Today I installed a new condenser motor on a rheem, vintage 1976...The old motor was the original, 39 years old & it had 4 wires & two separate capacitors for the compresser & condenser - The new motor only had three wires & I couldn't figure the wiring out completely until I watched this video & you showed the jumper wire from the switch to the capacitor. It was music to my ears when I heard that baby come on. I had to get this done, it was 91 degrees inside the house...So, THANX MAN & much success to you all.

    Thanks for the video. A suggestion would to be mark shaft, pull fan blade back off and start the motor, hold your hacksaw against the shaft and let the motor do the work.

    holy dog snot! the a/ c guy came out this am and was going to charge me $450.00 tomorrow for this. I watched this, found a local parts supply place, and knocked it out in 1 hour for $110!! thank you so much, especially for really explaining the wiring part well. I'm in florida, it was over 90 degrees (107 heat index!). they were going to make us wait at least another 24 hours and you saved me $340! I think my dog would have had a heat stroke by then for real!

    This video gave me confidence to fix my own AC fan. Might be good to point out additional pointers on separating a seized fan blade from motor shaft and importance of positioning fan in the exact spot on new motor shaft to prevent wobbles. This repair cost me $220 for motor and capacitor. Would of been $500-$1000 if a professional did it. Thank you!!

    You say cut the shaft or it will wear out the bearings prematurely.
    That's hard for me to believe, it's a small amount of metal, it's all down the axis of rotation, no out of balance.
    I don't see why the length of the shaft matters to the bearings.
    I would appreciate it if you could enlighten me.

    1. Do you install the capacitor for the fan motor with the terminals facing downward or upward.2. Does it matter which lead goes into each of the capacitor terminals.

    • @WordofAdviceTV

      Doesn't matter which lead goes to which capacitor terminal and supposedly you will get more life out of the capacitor if you mount it upwards (the terminal connections facing up)

    The video was great! I enjoyed watching it. One technical infraction It looks like on the rheem unit now the blade was in a much different location. I don't know about the all the way down and back up a little technique.

    • @StephenShares
      @StephenShares  9 років тому

      Right Joe I should have mentioned if there was a housing of way or plate not sure what we can call that part of the lid. But sometimes I position the blade to be 2/3rds below and 1/3 above the lid.
      Good call

    • @joeshearer1247
      @joeshearer1247 9 років тому

      I was talking more in reference to maintaining proper air flow by positioning blade properly in the fan opening inside.

    • @StephenShares
      @StephenShares  9 років тому +1

      Interesting Joe I always let the lid determine that for me. If there's a flange on the lid that I try to position it two thirds grabbing and one third above but if there's no flange and it's just an open hole in the lid then I do try to position it as stated in the video of all the way down and then up a little.
      How do you do it Joe Shearer ?

    • @joeshearer1247
      @joeshearer1247 9 років тому +1

      The very first unit had no fan shroud (orifice) so that one is probably fine close to the motor like you had it. I usually measure what is was from factory and put it back there. Now the rheem unit did have an orifice inside the unit and that is one I would have measured for sure. And measure to something stationary like the top of unit so that the difference in motor length does not mess you up. Lastly the carrier orifice was integrated in the top of unit so it should be measured as well. I usually see fan blade leading edge just 1/2-1" inside the lip of orifice. If there is not a factory motor to reference.

    I just recently hooked up a condenser motor as you outlined in your final example (white to capacitor, black to board, and brown to capacitor) and noticed my fan seems to be running in the opposite direction. It was a reversible motor so I flipped the wires at the motor and all is now running as needed. Any reason why the motor would run opposite as intended though?

    • @StephenShares
      @StephenShares  5 років тому +1

      Timothy Bryant some motors have reversible lead wires it’s the extra four wire plug into each other is if they switch them there’s only one other way they can wire and then it reverses the rotation.

  • @adamburdette23
    @adamburdette23 4 роки тому

    Does the motor need to be replaced with the exact same motor like amps, hz, hp wise? I have a pretty big central a/c unit i have searched for hours, I found 1 fan (edit - Fan Motor) matching every single spec of my current motor. But it’s almost $300. I am pretty good at electrical wiring a/c and d/c. But I’m not very knowledgeable about these things. I would love to spend 100 and be ice cold again. Thanks for the video though!

  • @JUNJUN-lw2vr

  • @aangel5001

    Hello how you doing, just ran into your video, why do you talk about two-way capacitor versus a three-way capacitor what is the benefits between the two and do you recommend just doing a three-way capacitor

    • @StephenShares
      @StephenShares  7 місяців тому

      They both work the same, it’s preference. Some systems will have a seperate 2 pole capacitor for the motor and another for the compressor. And some systems have a 3 pole capacitor, where the motor and compressor share a common terminal and each have a pole so they share the same capacitor, on this one pole is rated for example 5mfd and the other may be 69mfd. The 3 way is more common nowadays

    Off topic question, I live here in the Sacramento area and we get an occasional consecutive triple digits during summer and the Condenser unit doesn't come on (fan motor running only)... I typically hose down the outside housing unit to get it running. Would you happen to know if the A/C unit needs to be recharge??? Thank you in advance.

    • @StephenShares
      @StephenShares  8 років тому

      Yes a 1/3 can replace a 1/8 but I would go with a 1/4 you can find a 1/4 with or without the cap either way is ok as long as it rated to handle the amp draw.
      1/4 all day don't go 1/3 although it will work it will rattle and probably won't last as long.

      That motor will work fine you can order it and that's a four wire motor but you can wire it just like a three wire motor all you have to do is take the brown wire with the white stripe and Wirenut it don't use it, just use the other three. Or you can just wire it before wire Methen put the two browns to the new capacitor and the two power legs to the contactor and you're done but the video you're commenting on has three different examples of the condenser motor and I wired them three different ways for your reference

      It’s better to cut the shaft, that way over time it doesn’t lean a little and wear a bearing. The manual says to cut the shaft if you don’t well most people get away with it because it’s not that serious but it can wear out your bearing.
      Short answer cutting the shaft is the right way

    My system has lasted about 27 year as far as condenser fan goes! That's all that's wrong with my system is a bearing gone bad in condenser fan motor. The old stuff last forever!!!!!!

    Oh no. I didn't see where he cut off the excess arm shaft, so as not to get premature bearing wear, like he did in the other video.

    Sorry but your wiring explanation could not be worse. If I was an expert I would not need a video. Show me what you did please. My old motor did not have the second little capacitor. But the new one does. 🤷‍♂️

      The motor is mounted directly to the metal chassis. The ground wire on the aftermarket motor is not needed.

    To the flock of DIY’ers hovering around this video in celebration of their new found technical skills: The great part of doing it yourself is obviously saving money......the bad part of DIY......you did not have a trained technician at your unit during this repair. So you’ve missed an opportunity to have a trained person diagnosing other issues that will COST you way more than that $200 you saved on the motor repair.
    Why did your motor fail? Hmmm don’t know it just doesn’t spin so I “fixed it”.....let it run another 5 years with issues you couldn’t see through your DIY goggles and add up the utility costs incurred by running your unit low on charge from a leak, high head pressure from a plugged coil, a bent fan blade running backwards and an evaporator that has 10 years worth of your wife’s hair living in it. But keep on keeping on.....show your kids how to DIY so they can half listen to the half you know.....then they’ll end up with a 1/4 of the required knowledge and end up as my useless apprentice who texts all day while I explain things he has no interest in. 👍🏼
    Trade labor shortage in summary ☝🏻and it’s all the DIY money savers fault. Lol 😆
