A RETURN OF THE ALTERED DOMINANT EGO MAN!!
This is pure gold. Your approach to the breakdown and the concepts is brilliantly illustrated and eloquently performed. It really hits the mark. Thanks Kent!
Pure gold...hits the mark...cool words to my ears and heart! Thanks!
Bill evans is one of the most brilliant minds in jazz, trying to learn from him is overwhelming and humbling every time.
Thanks for another great one Kent, been watching for 3 years now :)
Thanks for the comment...and I agree.
One of your very best lessons yet. Packed with information not just about why Bill Evans sounds so good, but why you sound so good. I hope you will continue to produce in-depth material like this. Honestly, you have a style that is recognizable from your first note like some of the other jazz greats. This lesson went a long way toward helping me understand how Bill Evans and you go beyond the ordinary in terms of voicing and harmony and dynamics to produce the sounds you do. Swing loose.
This is a wonderful comment. Richard. You nailed it. and this is one of my favorites...I'm always trying to improve and have more professional presentations.... just ordered a new camera.
Bill Evans plays Kent Hewitt very well. Love the Keyboard perspective 👍🇦🇺
Ha!...nice comment...thanks!
Extremely informative, one would be hard pressed to find a mentor better than Bill Evans!
Totally, my friend. Glad you liked it!
Hello Kent! This is your buddy Will from Cali- I haven’t written you in a long while! But I love your humor: Alter Dom. Man! I have learned so much from you and your videos- and I thank you whole heartedly! Keep teaching us- and keep us laughing- your the best!
Hi William,
I love my buddies. especially form the CA, because I have fond memories of living there, so many years ago, which was the turning point for me converting from a banker to a musician. I'm so glad that you have connected with me again, and I hope I can visit you someday. Love the west coast of US.
Hi Kent- thanks for responding! I’m kind of an old schooler( 67yrs. 11-21-54) the 11-21 part is supposedly Hoagy Carmichael’s birthday- I’m ok with that! I’m SO glad you went into music ( it was a Devine intervention) because so many musicians have learned from you! If you would have never told me the story how you had to work so hard to catch up( being a banker) I never would have known the difference! The first time I found you on You Tube I just figured you were a gifted cat that had a lot of chops! Seriously!Speaking of Cali I want to get out of here and move to Carson City Nevada! I just wish I could go somewhere and see you perform live! These days everything’s on line! Well, I think I’ll tune in another of your great videos- you are the most patient teacher around! Oh- and say hello to the:ADEMan for me would ya! See ya Kent I love your sense of humor!
thank you sir... for sharing your life time golden knowledge
Wonderful comment! It's my pleasure!
Great playing Kent
Thank you!
Enjoyed this very much. I like the virtual piano above the real keyboard. Great job.
Thank you very much!
The most powerful words than other Jazz player : Bill evans taught me
Thanks for the comment!
Wonderful Ken!!! Thanks a lot!
Thank you!
Wow Ken. I’ve been learning from u for years. I almost feel guilty taking in this knowledge that you’ve acquired from Bill Evans over your musical career. But I guess we learn from each other. You have such a surreal feel for the harmony and style of Bill Evans. Hope someday I’ll be able to play in the style of KH ! Good job once more.
Great compliment.....the best....thanks!
Pro tip: A theoretical way to look at the turnaround cycle over the pedal tone at 22:50 is to think of it as a 6-2-5-1 in F but the tonic note of each of those major 7 chords is a tritone sub. In F, normal cycle would be D-G-C-F, but notice how it's Ab-Db-Gb-F.
Good way to look at it!
Kent - thanks so much for everything you do - you are a star (altered dom guy has his moments as well).
Much appreciated... thanks!
Wow! Beautiful rendition.
Thank you!
Great great great. Ty
Thanks so much!
What a great tribute to Bill Evans! He would be thankful to you for teaching his mastery to thousands of us!! Thank you again Kent for another great video.
Thank you, Claudio, I really apprecaite your comment!
This is so well presented! Even a three chord, fake book guy like me can understand it. Thanks Kent! You are a great teacher and your enthusiasm for Evans shines through. You are a great player yourself. I and many others, are grateful that you've taken the time and trouble to analyze what these greats of jazz are doing, so that you can master it yourself and share it with us! Thank you, Thank you!
It is a great pleasure for me...but only valuable if I hear from you and others...so many, many thanks!
This truly is one of your best videos. Please stay well, Arnold.
Great comment and feedback...so helpful...a million thanks!
You are and shall always be my teacher. Please - "how high the moon" ???
Thanks .....I need to get to your request.
A lot of great piano players cannot be distinguished by their sound. A guitar player can be identified. A few licks from BB King, Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia or David Gilmore and the listener knows the musician. A listener knows when they hear Bill Evans play. I am not taking away from other great piano players. I am just highlighting the point that his sound was unique. On a side note, he is one of my favorite musicians.
I agree, totally. Many were influenced by him , but no one can sound just like him
WOW... That playing is absolutely fantastic!
Thank you kindly! Swing loose!
Bill Evans is a God. Thank you!
Yes, he was an is! He went back to him early.
I'm really learning a lot from your videos.
I still have a lot to learn, but I will keep practicing without giving up.
Thank you for always posting really good lessons. :)
You are the best teacher ever!! 👍
I really apprecaite the compliment...many thanks!
Thank you so much for your videos Kent! The first time I heard Bill Evans was on his Danny Boy rearrangement. I was literally overwhelmed by so much beauty, so much emotion that it brought tears to my eyes. What strikes me about him is that he never sacrifices the melody (unlike others) but on the contrary, he places it at the center of his interpretation, reveals it and enriches it.
My level is for the moment unfortunately too limited to allow me to implement all these techniques but in the meantime I listen to your magnificent interpretations and your explanations. I can't wait to be myself able to give others so much beauty.
So THANK U for helping everyone to work their own magic, for the happiness of all.
That's a wonderful affirming comment, Fabian...so much appreciated!
Great explanation, I'm absorbing a lot of information by videos like this, and as a beginner jazz pianist as you know this is essential. You leave no space for doubts, appreciate the effort, please continue the amazing job you are doing. You transmit a lot of passion and make me wanna play more and more.
And obviously, what a performance, stunning. 🙏🏼
Wonderful comment, Marco. And very helpful feedback, for me to keep going!
I've come back to this one today. It's really on the edge of my ability but I love these big stacked chords. I've recently got a very nice "Gabriel Gaveau" french baby grand piano. beautiful bell like tone. new strings. new hammers. felt, etc. A good acoustic piano really makes a difference I reckon. These chords really sing on this piano. I've been learning & playing the "Married life" theme from the Pixar movie "UP". It sounds average on my upright but on the Baby Grand it sounds totally different. I know all these great jazz pianists were amazing but a really good acoustic piano really adds something too. I mean... Maybe people might think they are doing something wrong when they try to play this Bill Evans piece but if they tried a really top piano it would actually sound almost as good as the legends. (Hammer voicing is one of the most important things for a piano to sound good).
I agree, Robin, a great acoustic piano can make all the difference in how you play. Except in this case I was playing a digital piano.....sorry!
@@KentHewittpiano88 Hehe! I know. some of those digital pianos are really good. I was just making the point. 9th point to sound like Bill Evans. Have a 9ft Steinway grand in your house! hehe
Terrific video as always Kent. Might I suggest that if you do another video on Bill I’d love to hear your breakdown of “Spartacus/ A Love Theme” from the “Alone” record I believe. I love that arrangement. Keep up the great work.
I remember that he had a great version of that...reminded me of Emily. Thanks so much.
Kent thank you for all you do! I've learned a lot over the years of watching your videos!
Thanks so much for telling me!
Another really great tutorial! Particularly liked the emphasis on dynamics - something that’s often overlooked outside of classical music. One thing I’ve really got from listening to BE is the way he often follows an incredibly sparse chord e.g. just a minor second, with a very expansive chord. Incredibly effective. Diolch yn fawr i chi/Thank you so much
I agree, Sharon. Good observation...and our ears tell us things that expand our concepts and help us to improve...and you have that talent!
Absolutely beautiful Kent..Bill was so brilliant ..these 8 elements that you covered were extremely helpful & valuable to my listening ears...loved the song & your extraordinary musicianship...thx for the ADEM drop in!!!👍
Thanks Phyllis, Sorry I took so long to reply. I'm looking back on recent vids. I'm very happy how this one turned out, so thanks so much for the affirmation. Blessings, KH
@@KentHewittpiano88 👍truly a great video!!
Thank you!
Same back to you!
I was listening to Bill Evans recording of The Touch Of Your Lips at the Montreux Jazz Festival yesterday, and was wondering how he added so much movement with his left hand. The tritone substitutions and left hand arpeggios are super helpful in this video. Thanks a ton for this video! I'm excited to get more of Bill's sound into my fingers and ears!
Wishing you the best...glad to help out!
Well you did learn the right things from Evans (and from a few others). So good that now we get to learn all of this from you. Great playing.
Great comment...thanks so much!
I missed you, Altered Dominant Ego Man! Thank you for the Beethoven joke, I'm going to pester all my friends with it 🤣
Please do!
Thank you my good sir
You bet!
Another fantastic study! Thank you Kent!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful song and performance! A nice dive into Bill Evans' style and your dynamic interpretation.
Thanks, Jay. Welcome back!
I’ve been listening to Bill Evans all week not sure what song to learn first
I have a playlist of videos on Bill Evans ....that might help you. Please let me know. ua-cam.com/play/PLFuMibnl_h5ZNh3QHMhPJ5COU7lswpwYa.html
These videos are great Kent. As a guitar player I've spent hours transcribing piano pieces/solos and it's great to have someone just play it on the piano so I can see. Transcribing is valuable, but sometimes I just want the gist of what the hell Bill Evans was doing and I can't play a thing on the piano....
Bellissimo pezzo, grazie a lot.👍👍😁
Difficult, for me, but, thanks, i catch what i can..🤍
You can do it!
🎵 Hi Kent, great new format for your videos buddy. Love this one, packed full of ideas to use in our playing from two masters of the instrument, Mr Evans and Mr Hewitt. Another excellent video Kent. Wonderful! Cheers! 👍🎵
Thanks for the cool comment...swing loose, Dave!
I always appreciate you and your videos thank you very much
You are so welcome!
Absolutely beautiful! 🌹🌹🌹
Thanks so much, my dear!
Great tutorial and really lovely arrangement, many thanks.
Thanks so much, Howard!
Thanks for this video, it's helping me figure out which things I already know and which things I'm not so great at yet. When I listen to you play I'm just tempted to give up! But breaking things down this way makes it manageable.
I have felt that way too, Candice. Thanks for the comment!
WOW!
Thank you very much for teaching on Bills playing...plenty to work on to improve playing. Bruce Forsyth would have enjoyed your teaching on "Young and foolish" one of the songs he used to sing on the TV with much feeling he liked to play the piano to in addition to dancing including tap dancing and chearie humour... his well known line .."nice to see you ..to see to see you nice " he enjoyed his piano.Did you ever see Brucie at his piano?
Hi Charles! I haven't seen him, but thanks for telling me...I'll have to check him out. Swing loose!
Thanks for this beautiful tutorial.
Many thanks!
This is Gold....thanks a lot Kent
Gold!...cool, man1...million thanks!
Excellent.
Please make more about BEBOP Jazz Piano in depth... thanks
Please watch my new video on Bebop!
Very cool video lots of insights on Bills playing. I know it's a good lesson when I keep stopping the video so I can experiment with the concept before continuing on.
When I read your comments Phyllis, I imagine it's someone else, and I think this person is so hip, then I see it's you! God bless and thanks!
@@KentHewittpiano88 I think you meant to post this to another person in this thread.
Thanx, ADEM and Kent!

Great video KH! I'll be chewing on this for a long time, and thanks for the download.

@@KentHewittpiano88 That makes us Bebop Brothers!! :)
Amazing!! Thanks!
Thank you!
Wow!!! you played that beautifully. I need to really study this one. Bill Evans was surely the king of harmony. (I wish my fingers were a bit faster. those quick runs I still find difficult. hehe).
Yes, we all wish the same, Robin. Thanks for the comment!
@@KentHewittpiano88 Thanks Kent. I'm really improving a lot over the last few months. simple scale runs and arpeggios I can do really fast but complicated improv stuff I'm still too slow. Anyway, thanks for all the tips/advice/lessons. good stuff!!
Amazing man,thank you
Thank you!
I Am Loving Your Tutorials Very Much !
Greetings From Ukraine !

Thank you from Rome (I was there!)
This is better than the the Bill Evans version!
Different...yes....better...not sure! But thanks!
That was trippy
Trippy funny
Then it got good
Cool, man!
Speaking of Dynamics, I'm reading a bio of Billy Joel and he said after his motorcycle accident he lost some use of his fingers in his left hand and said he can hold his own playing Rock but when playing Jazz or Classical he stinks, and mentioned Bill Evans as someone who has a great touch. He also said after his messy divorce in the early 1980s he took a vacation in the Caribbean and saw Christie Brinkley and while sitting at the piano he started playing As Time Goes By to draw her attention, one of the tricks he said he learned from Kent to pick up chicks in bars haha.
That's a good trick...you're a cool cat, John!
Gracias, me gusta su video y aún más la aplicación q nos muestra los acordes.
What is the name of the program (software) that you are showing? Virtual piano with display of notes.
It's called OBS studio...you can find it on line.
Thank you Kent, for everything! What's the software that's showing what notes/chords you're playing?
OBS studio...just Google it.

Beautiful rendition! Is that lake Tahoe out the window or green screen?
Just another scene from the Jazz Ranch. We have lakes, mountains, open range, all here!
How do you get the transcription of what you player?
that intro was very norm macdonald 🤣
At first I didn't understand ..then I Googled and remembered he was a person I'd seen and liked.
what song is that at the start and end of the video?
My Romance.....my trio playing a favorite of and inspired by Bill Evans.
