I'm also a petroleum engineering from Colombia, I get my degree two years ago and I have been applying in maybe 40 times and only in one I recieved a feedback somehting like (You profile is good but it is not complete for us) A good option is chemical engineering or mechanical engineering, the both are 70% and 50% similar to petroleum engeering. The both have the same difficult or more difficult than petroleum engineering. For another side, now is be good in programming, maybe a degree relate to programming, system, computer science something like that is more demanded in the market to secure a position after you get the tittle. I completely agree. I graduated in 2016, and I also think that earning a Bachelor's degree in Petroleum Engineering isn't as valuable nowadays. I ended up building a career outside the petroleum industry. My initial goal was to get rich by choosing this course back then, haha. I should have pursued another engineering field like electrical, mechanical, or civil, which are broader than petroleum. Even taking IT or data science would have been a better choice.

Maybe you should've talked to someone at your school and had them help you find a job, and if you don't have a good GPA nobody is gonna want to hire you. My dad graduated from UND, he makes 250k a year, been doing it for 25 years, absolutely loves it

I'm ready to be sent anywhere, and that's were people run into a problem, this job requires lots of hours in middle of no where. Some can do it with families some can't.

However I did some courses in software testing which has helped me secure a job in IT industry. Guys never go after inflated salary figures given on internet.

yes tell her to study anything else. Her motivation is exactly like me when I was young its because the money haha. in fact nowadays here in Australia IT graduates getting more money than Petroleum engineer graduates. Another option maybe try to get into Mining or Geology course instead

Oil Industry is always boom and bust. Went to work in 2010. Industry was giving $40K signing bonus’s. With $150K salary’s. That time they had virtually no PET Engineer’s. This boom lasted up till 2015. Most PET Eng. I know have been laid off. Now in 2022 the industry is firing back up.

no. not doing oil anymore. Just not interested. Yes, you can do that but it'll be a bit difficult finding a job that pays very well straight out of college(just a heads up). I love it. 53k but in Louisiana, thats ok money. I mean.....im comfortable. My hours are very very light. maybe 10 hours a week realistically. sometimes in the field, but I'm merely just sitting in the truck watching people wear appropriate gear and drill in the correct areas. Sometimes I'm staring in the sun 6 hours sampling mud.

No we don't do mining but we do drilling. You need a source of energy to power electric cars. Renewable is not close to overtake the non renewable energy. Smaller O&G companies are safer.
After graduating in petroleum engineering with good grades. when go for a job they ask for experience. How can we get experience when they does not give us even internship. If they give you internship its just 1 month. I also highly recommend not to go for any degree related to petroleum
You're right. This is a very negative video. A fresh college graduate cannot find a job overseas in the O&G field. They look for 10+ year experienced people. It is impossible for you to find a job overseas if you have no experience. I speak 4 languages: English, French, Farsi and Arabic all fluently. I was in the same shoes thinking that I was different than everyone else and that I could work over seas in the Middle East. HELL to the f*cking no.

Don't blame about youre degree , did you active connecting other people / had join competition about petroleum since freshmen or proactive search to internship about petroleum? it is a cyclic industry. I believe petroleum industry still lucrative for next 2-3 decades. Having said that, it is really cyclic based on supply and demand. No one has the crystal ball to predict when is the next cycle of low oil price, one thing for sure, keep learning, keep resilience, that is what will make you grow, and one day i hope you will find your purpose

Just get a job. It’s not a hard job to get if you have a decent gpa or some work experience from college. LSU for example has many job fairs where students can shadow and get experience. This dude obviously put 0 effort into the major and just saw money then blamed the major for his failure.

I studied in Colombia, and I was planing to go to US, but there is very complicate to get a job because you need experience, and the experience is impossible to get in Colombia, there are 75% of unemployed index in petroleum engineering but I believe that is more. The best students in my promotion, maybe 5 are doing doctorate studies, because they don't find a job. I'm working in the uni, but in the future I'm planing to get a master in materials science. The best option is chemical engineering or mechanical, is very similar but is more easy to get a job.

Oil Industry is always boom and bust. Went to work in 2010. Industry was giving $40K signing bonus’s. With $150K salary’s. That time they had virtually no PET Engineer’s. This boom lasted up till 2015. Most PET Eng. I know have been laid off. Now in 2022 the industry is firing back up.

Guys who are deciding to take petroleum engineering I will recommend you guys to graduate from mother fields like (mechanical, electrical chemical, CIS), etc, and then do master in petroleum engineering. I am living in Saudi Arabia and the problem with petroleum engineering is that they want 5 years of experience. seriously in Saudi Arabia company, first priority is to hire experience employer or or Saudi citizen. so that why I decide to change my field.

He was chosen out of 3800 interviewed candidates. So again, that is a bad example but those two degrees are good! But don’t expect a 140k job like my friend because of it.

It depends. Some are 8 hour jobs. Some are 12 hour shifts for 3 weeks and off one week.

no. not doing oil anymore. Just not interested. Yes, you can do that but it'll be a bit difficult finding a job that pays very well straight out of college(just a heads up). I love it. 53k but in Louisiana, thats ok money. I mean.....im comfortable. My hours are very very light. maybe 10 hours a week realistically. sometimes in the field, but I'm merely just sitting in the truck watching people wear appropriate gear and drill in the correct areas. Sometimes I'm staring in the sun 6 hours sampling mud.

No we don't do mining but we do drilling. You need a source of energy to power electric cars. Renewable is not close to overtake the non renewable energy. Smaller O&G companies are safer.

it is a cyclic industry. I believe petroleum industry still lucrative for next 2-3 decades. Having said that, it is really cyclic based on supply and demand. No one has the crystal ball to predict when is the next cycle of low oil price, one thing for sure, keep learning, keep resilience, that is what will make you grow, and one day i hope you will find your purpose

My was thinking to do MS in mechanical or electrical engineering , or go into data analytics or something ( because being a petroleum engineer you know how to deal with a ton of data ) , or if nothing works out I was planning to do MBA (job prospects are good there ) , do share you thoughts whether I'm thinking in a right direction or not !☺️
Just get a job. It’s not a hard job to get if you have a decent gpa or some work experience from college. LSU for example has many job fairs where students can shadow and get experience. This dude obviously put 0 effort into the major and just saw money then blamed the major for his failure.

Water sampling/compliance work. Salary in the first years are 50-60. After ten years it's around 90-110

I'm planning of taking a petroleum engineer here in my home country and after I got a little experience( maybe 5 yrs or more ) I'll go to USA to work there as a petroleum engineer because of the big salary that I always see when I'm searching about it. I studied in Colombia, and I was planing to go to US, but there is very complicate to get a job because you need experience, and the experience is impossible to get in Colombia, there are 75% of unemployed index in petroleum engineering but I believe that is more. The best students in my promotion, maybe 5 are doing doctorate studies, because they don't find a job. I'm working in the uni, but in the future I'm planing to get a master in materials science. The best option is chemical engineering or mechanical, is very similar but is more easy to get a job.
