I accidently did one of these stops at the roller rink yesterday. Some little kid shot out in front of me with a skate mate. I swerved out of the way and somehow ended up spinning my self backwards ( I'm not the most experienced skater LOL ) I thought " oh crap ! " and hit my toe stops. It must have looked pretty good because a couple of skaters were like, " that was cool ! how do you do that ? " I don't know how I did it so I decided to play it cool and said " Lot's of practice " then skated off. :)
i've done this too!!!! but i was going down hill and couldn't stop so i jumped before hitting the sidewalk and flew full body belly down in a giant bush.. the bush definitely saved my life lol
Awww thank you! I do. Everyday I check in and see what you all have to say. It helps me figure out what to teach next. I am just very grateful that you are watching and appreciating the information. It keeps me super motivated.
@@Dirtydeborahharry We appreciate you so much Dirty! I'm positive you have a big impact on getting the world rollin' on 8 wheels. And that is quite a glorious thing in my opinion. I hope I can have such a positive effect in the community someday ♥️
@@Dirtydeborahharry Love your passion, the way you express it/yourself, your style and teaching groove.. I am so new to skating, started last week as a 38 year old girl :) but I am watching your videos at least a year to prepare myself for my sweet skates. I would like to see a short video on how to put my skates on. The laces of new skates are so awkward and it's kind of hard to get them tide. How they should have to fit to be secure? Also, it is kind of difficult to put them on outside. Do you have any tipps for absolute beginners? Now I am going to watch every video you made on stopping outside :D keep rollin`, lovely regards from Leipzig, Germany
"You're gonna have to do it, or you're gonna have dire consequences" , I swear my dad said the exact thing when he taught me how to cycle! Also, I need that on a T-shirt
Getting back on skates at age 48 and OMG, this happened to me. A sudden decline, my eyes were popped out of my head . Not sure how I got out of that one but I made it. Now I'll go back and practice what you shared although still afraid to use toe stops. Thanks for your great videos.
37 years since I was on quads - and I've never ever used quads outside. Just in a roller rink. Now I'm 55 - and I'm telling you! It's not like riding a bike. You - at least I have - forget everything! It is scaaaary!!! Lol but still as fun as I remember!
This is the sort of tough instruction I need lol. I am such a chicken about practicing stopping. This can be life or death here. I humbly thanked a man the other night for stopping in time and not murdering me when I stumbled off a sidewalk ramp. I don't care how embarrassing it looks I will simply toss myself backwards. Smashed and possibly squished to death is not the way I want to go.
Ma girl,Deborah! How did you know my neighbourhood streets are rough and all false flats just like that abandoned batting cage? 🤣 Thank you for this video, Deborah, I needed it! Great camera work too, Rollielocks! 🥰🥰
I'm guessing a lot of your viewers still have the stock toestops that came with their first skates, and I know how fast those little suregrip carrera stops get chewed up by asphalt, so could you talk a little bit about good toestops for outdoors and if the different shapes make a difference?
Omg!! I wish I saw this yesterday, this is so very helpful! You’re the best, I’m going to practice tomorrow. I was on a false flat yesterday and gained so much speed and had no idea how to stop! By the grace of God I was able to slow down at the last minute and not get hit by car.. I was scared to death! Thank you Dirty, you’re the best teacher and I greatly appreciate all your awesome tips!! God Bless you, beautiful!🙏🏽♥️🤗
I did the same exact screaming when I was skating today and realized I was going downhill, can’t believe you have an exact video about this!!! Thanks so much! Day 2 went so much better after watching your videos yesterday
I love your style of instructing! It’s so friendly for people of all levels. Do you have a tutorial for crazy legs? Would love to learn this from you!!
This video was so helpful! I’ve had a lot of trouble with balance in general on my skates and basically look like a newborn filly every time I’m out. Hoping to try this when I skate tonight!
Yay! I am doing well at skating forward, but need to improve stopping and I’m learning skating backwards! I can also turn and spin but sometimes get them mixed up 🤪
You are such a good teacher!!!! I grew up skating and my first job at 16 was a carhop at Sonic - I spent my entire childhood rolling around on sundays! Majority of these moves I learned just from skating but girl, I’m 34 and just now getting myself back into skating almost 20yrs later!! Thank you so much for explaining ALL the fine details & nitty gritty - keep up the videos for us all dirty!!!! 🙌
Skating outdoors is awesome! That's how I learned...outdoors when I was 3. Lots of bumps and bruises in the beginning, but also lots of hill-bombing and making new friends as I got older and more confident on my skates. Even with that, it never hurts for me to review the essentials of outdoor skating, because I learn something new each time, and especially since I'm getting ready to roll again.
You’re the coolest! Thanks for the tip about my lower back pain while skating :) my posture has improved and I don’t feel it anymore :) I’m at day 15 of skating !!!
Dirty, you are a goddess!!! After 20 years away, I’m finally back on skates. When I was a kid, there were no You Tube lessons or really anyone I felt comfortable asking in person, so I figured things out and skated on and off for decades. Now, at 50, wanting to do it right, your videos have been life changing! Thank you so much!! You rock!!! Your energy is inspiring and contagious.
I have been LOOKING for a video like this. I skate outdoors a lot and just kind of accept that I'm gonna crash when I end up on a downhill. I feel like every video other than this one has been unhelpful. This should have WAY more views. So glad I found this! Thank you!
Thank you for this! Every place I've tried to practice has a hidden decline and I hate it. I'm finally comfortable skating outside (in most areas) but not downhill! I've been doing plow stops. They'll slow me down, but I still don't stop.
At least they are slowing you down and that is key. Watch my "Stopping on Roller Skates" playlist for switching your stopping technique after the slow down.
I love your videos Dirty! You are a great teacher! I have been watching your videos because I haven’t have time to go skating after work but I have been doing the motions without the skates so my body gets use to it once I’m skating....nothing will stop me from skating not even not being on my skates momentarily. Lol but it’s Saturday so Yaiii!!!! I can grab my skates and practice with them finally! Thank you for the great tips, tricks and teaching! You are so specific about which body part is moving and what is going to happen I love it! Thank you, thank you thank you!
I have been watching tons of these skate videos on UA-cam, but you BY FAR are the absolute best! Hilarious, adorable, and so knowledgeable about techniques! You are an OG for real! And your channel has been so helpful for a beginner skater like me!
I know the perfect spot to practice down will skating. As scared as I am trying this, I have to remember it wasn't too long ago that I was scared to go on uneven roads. The ladder analogy helps make all of this sense.
No choice but outdoor skating right now. I'm going to try these stops on the slight, terrifying, hill where I can skate. I learn so much from your channel! Can't wait for cooler weather and open rinks so I can practice more. Thanks for your teaching, it's priceless to me. I took up quad skating at 65, never give up!
I came across a couple bumpy slopes yesterday and just went full speed for it knowing that I would trip myself up and fall if I tried to slow down. I’m glad I made it through but I need to learn how to do this. Thanks!
I seriously adore you Deborah you are the best. I’m having to relearn everything I thought I knew about skating (turns out I knew nothing lol) and I can only skate outside. Very hard for a newbie with all the changes in terrain :-) thank you!!!
I got skates a month ago but am so bad at stopping downhill - this helps so much! Thanks! I wish I could visit you in CA to get some skate lessons!! You're da best!
Debra you are amazing! I have just discovered you. Dealing with major health issues and on treatment at the moment so confined to bed a lot. I literally LOVE to watch you skate. My ideal video would just be 3 mins of you skating around your rink to good music :)

Thank you so much for what you are doing for the skate community. I am 50 years old and am getting back into skating but It's been so long that I am rusty and need a refresher! I fell last week before I started watching you and I think that my soul left my body!!! But I am putting my skates back on though, again Thank you sooooo much, you are saving my tail bone!!
I only recently got the hang of using one of my toe stops going forwards, maybe I'll check back in in a month and I'll have turned around and can stop on them! I've been learning on a slanted driveway and it's been tough to learn on but also a great spot to practice this on!
I'll bet when you teach kids, they absolutely love you. Also, if that abandoned batting cage were a full circle, and all the debris cleaned up, what a fun and unusual roller-rink it could be.
Love yah! Such clear info. Now if I could just do it. Practicing in my kitchen right now. An outta control kid took me out at your rink😵😖! I have a broken wrist. Time to buy protective gear and take your intro classes🤗! Can’t wait!😁
"I'm on a decline and I didn't know it!"😂 Have you been spying on me? This is so relatable and it scares me every time. Thank you so much for this video. Now maybe I can stop fearing for my life and be more confident when secret hills enter the scene.

Right!? I am gonna talk to my cousin. How crazy would that be? Smooth jazz? I AM IN!
Awesome! Cool. Let me know if you would like to bounce around some creative ideas.
