From my knowledge i think subgrade is not a compulsory layer..it is provided if the High Flood Level (HFL) is comparatively on higher level. (Bottom of subgrade layer is the HFL level). In hilly areas where existing soil CBR is comparatively high and HFL is low, we don't need to provide subgrade.
For different layer different cbr requires. Fill embankment 20 percent subgrade 30 percent, subbase 90 percent and stone base100 percent cbr is to be achieved
If design thickness is more than specified layer thickness split into two layers. Ex. Subgrade thickness is 500 mm, the maximum thickness allowed for compaction is 250 mm so laying in 2 layers is correct. Similarly DBM design thickness is 120 mm, maximum allowable thickness is 100mm, so laying in two layers of 60 mm is correct.
Why to construct 4-6m Embankment where we can construct pillars, interlocking bridges & other options keeping in view of morden infrastructure & Economical factor. If everyone follows filling & specifications then we'll be lacking resources as per Soil Conservation department
In plain or rolling areas the height of road is normally 1.5 to 2.5 m only. The crust itself is 500mm subgrade+250 GSB+250 Wmm+ 120 DBM+ 50 mm BC1.170 m which is Crust and must be laid. The correction embankment is other 0.5 to 1 meter. Only at Bridge approaches or Underpasses the height of embankment 7 to 10 m.
