Congrats, Emily and Karl. Really enjoying these interviews. I hope it's a regular thing. Hearing about the growth of the tour and sport through these thoughtful questions and answers is exciting. Emily could be the subject of a documentary of her current journey...and Karl would be a great storyteller.
Please let folks know a little more about what happened with Appleton or edit that out of the video. I agree that someone with an eye for TV needs to be involved in making decisions that help grow the sport with non-pool playing people. That's who you have to interest and engage. The gray cloth is fantastic, pocket size is a good change, and ball colors is probably going to be fine. However, to allude to the unprofessionalism of a player without giving any details or information is unarguably bad for the sport. Either share more information so people can understand the decision (not alluding and implying unprofessionalism) or edit the video so that we don't hear someone indirectly trashing a player without giving any context. Thank you Karl and Matchroom! I really do appreciate what you're trying to do for pool!
I agree and I think they are both good people. But they say 83 percent of Russians approve of Putin. So people aren't wanting to let any Russians do anything.
Fair play to Emily, shes clearly an honest and straight talking person who has so much passion for the game and only wants to do the best for the game and the players....and long may it continue. Also keep this behind the scenes content going Karl, its brilliant.
The issue with the purple 5 is there are 2 or maybe 3 ball sets that have a purple 5 so it's confusing for most people who have seen a pool ball in their live.
The color of the ball is fine. I just appreciate that a company as big as matchroom is dumping money into pool and trying to take it to the level of snooker. I promise you the pro’s are happy to be playing in events where they don’t have to worry about getting paid
The ball colors can stay the way they are now... just make the purple the 4 again and make the pink the 5. It is frustrating trying to predict a players pattern only to see them play to the pink when I expect them to play to the purple since that is the color every pool room uses.
Strongly disagree on the ball colors. Emily's logic is (paraphrasing) "we changed it, lets not change it again because then there will be too many changes". When a mistake is made, its best to correct it asap. Not keep it for years "so we don't change it again". ALSO, I know Emily only cares about 9 ball, but when playing 10 ball or full rack games, the 2, 8, and 10, now can be confused as a TV viewer. Its WORSE than before! Please, pretty please with a cherry on top, go back to the real pool colors before everyone messed with them 25 years ago! Changing the cloth to grey is great. But the ball colors please put them back to the original Brunswick Centennial colors!
I agree. Let’s not change it again? Let’s recognize Matchroom didn’t change it in my basement pool table, they didn’t change it at my local bar, they didn’t change it for my recent league match, they didn’t change it for that weekly tournament I just showed up to, they didn’t change it for my regional tournament I showed up to, they didn’t change it for the gambling match I just played, and they didn’t change it for any of the non-Matchroom streams I saw this year. If they changed it back, it wouldn’t be too much change. It would be aligning with your audience. They can tweak things for TV production. I appreciate that. Grey clothe is fine. Bumble bee nineball is fine. They just can’t swap tradition color schemes within the set. That’s just dumb.
Yep - takes a special kind of stupid to swap colors... I listen to a lot of pool matches and the commentators goof up the order often because they either do not realize which ball set is being used or they just forget because they are used to the purple 4 ball... agreeing with the color swap tells me someone can't think critically about how rotation pool works ... This is NOT an enhancement.
@@mikeconner3280 Change is not automatically good. Growth comes from material innovation, knowledge and understanding of minute details and of course from experience. The colors have nothing to do with that.
Great interview. Regarding the ball colors, I think the point has been completely missed. Probably 99% of the people who tune in are pool players. I can't speak for all but for me I'm not worried about the TV visual affect that Emily spoke about. It's a pool match, not a Disney movie. The non traditional colored balls drives me nuts. A purple 5 ball? Are you kidding? I would venture to guess many fans feel the same. It's like using template racks which I loathe but that's a rant for another day.
Template racks sure beat spending 5 mins trying to get a tight rack on a standard pool hall table, saves a ton of time when running 9 ball racks with friends. As for the ball colors, I get changing then slightly for the sake of contrast, but why make a different ball purple, that is really an annoying one, of you want the color change, just keep the 4 purple and make the 5 pink...
@@AdamMarr And what's a "standard pool hall table?" Places I've been playing at over the years had Crowns and more recently Diamonds with Simonis cloth. On a quality table with quality cloth and a good triangle one can get a good rack in seconds. Far quicker than putzing around with a template rack. If you can't get the 'perfect rack' but close enough, who cares? You're amateurs, not pros playing in the US Open. I've stated elsewhere that template racks have no place in professional pool. What hackers do in their local pool hall is up to them.
@@beercanbrian1880 Guess you don't mind loose racks? Play tons of places regularly, including always finding a good hall when I travel, and even on good tables (diamond, gcs) it doesn't take long to start having to finagle balls to get a tight rack. One local place literally was changing the felt on tables as I was playing last week, and I got good racks with no effort, but by the next week they were already getting a bit roll-y with all the rack and breaks. The other upside is when playing someone else on a loser racks situation, there is less back and forth, and when its self rack, there is no question on gapping. If you don't like them, good on you, don't play with them, but there is a reason people do. The main reason they really go to wood racks in the finals (imo) has as much to do with introducing some inconsistency to keep people from easily "solving" the break as her answer of not having enough refs. Not sure why are speaking for pros, either, as my guess is you aren't one, but here is what one of the best players in the world says about it... www.reddit.com/r/billiards/comments/o5r1qp/svb_on_template_racks/
Great video Karlito! Emily is a doll. I love these interviews with her. It’s nice to get her perspective. I’m a fan of Emily and Matchroom for all they do.
The classic Aramith colours are the ones that represent the game the best. Yellow 1, Blue 2, Red 3, Violet 4, Orange 5, Green 6, Brown 7, Black 8, White with a Yellow striped 9 alongside a glittering cue ball with red dots.😍❤
Great interview. As a player I do like the grey cloth but don't like the purple 5 and pink 4, I prefer the traditional ball colors although I don't mind the black striped 9 ball. Can we possibly find out the size of the side pockets?
@@matthewmcallister8845 that's still bigger than Earl would like them to be 😂 Having said that, after all of his years of complaining about middle pockets, he had Diamond build him a table with no middle bags, and Daz proceeded to kick his arse on it. For $10k, if memory serves me correctly 🤣
The hill hill loss was brutal for Darren. Added to that they picked him to do a drug test again. Something he did for an organisation seven days ago. These two, plus the frustration he felt, and all these people around him pushing him, it's only logical for Darren to burst. They were very pushing. He's only human. It's hypocritical to say that I feel for him,but I banned him. The ban was unnecessary
While the Mosconi Cup might be the most popular and celebrated event, it might not really be the most "prestigious". It's limited to US and European players.
Absolutely outstanding! You are getting the hang of this. I believe the nine ball ship is heading in the right direction, even with the error in the colors of the 4 and 5 balls.
I don't agree with all of matchrooms decisions but I understand and respect their stance. These interviews tackling potentially rough subjects head on, trying to provide understanding and showing honesty and transparency, are a huge deal. Thanks Karl!
In my opinion... Emily as a person stands out as a great spokesman for Matchroom. But I can't align with her views at all... Obviously the color of the balls... It's one thing to use a new color, it's another to change up the order. Pool has an established audience and it shouldn't have been messed with. Aligning the pockets among manufacturers is a good thing... Cause this number of runouts are done at that size pockets etc... It all ends the endless discussions now. But, I think they should have gone larger than 4 inch... Reason being is that, as a viewer, to hear a player has done for example 8 break and runs "in a row", is just good television. And slightly beyond 4 inches would accomodate more for that. Lastly, even though I'm not a fan of Darren personally... If you're talking about a big game about aligning pockets and getting an industry standard... Then, the same reasoning should apply for sanctioning... Double sanctioning Darren was a step too far. The WPA did its thing and that should have been it. Matchroom could have perhaps been a direct advisor to the WPA in that sanctioning. But the "double" sanctioning is just bogus.
13:25 competition drives prize money up. These big companies will have events at the same time and top level pros will have to decide which one to play in and they are obviously going to play in the event that has the biggest purse. Bigger purse better players, bigger audience.
I love what you are doing with Matchroom, but it was definitely a short sighted decision to change the colour of the balls! And when Emily saw that it was wrong to change the colour at least revert the wrong doing!!!!!
Reminds of pro golfers that complain that the course is too difficult this year with pin placements and so forth. In an ongoing tournament, conditions should be consistent, but when it comes down to it, as long as every competitor is dealing with the same situation, it’s still fair.
This is what a major tour does. It makes manufacturers cooperate and listen to concerns. I love what Matchroom is doing, and Emily is phenomenal. I am not saying I haven't had complaints. That's second nature as a fan, we want it all exactly how we want. But overall this is the best thing to happen to pool in decades. Karl you are a great player and person. You and Jeremy will always be my dynamic due in the booth.
In my opinion, IF players are passing on a cut along the rail for something else because of pocket size, they are too small. I feel that is happening to a small degree. 4" is pushing it. That being said, they are missing at almost 10% which is a good thing. Look into breaking from the head spot. Nice work again.
If you make 9 ball a call-shot game with the 9 on the spot you are raising the standard without having to move to 10 ball. I see many money matches now played this way and it eliminates the flukes and luck.
Some things may seem trivial like the balls and cloth color but those things mean a lot to the viewer. Other other things like the pocket size and table manufacturer are more important to the players and less so to the viewer but they should be consistent. The only thing I want is for it to all get resolved and stop changing things around. I want CONSISTANCY. The same table color for all events, the same balls, pocket size, cloth color, and the same racking and CONSISTANCY!!!
Thanks Carl for keeping us updated by all the news on matchroom's tournaments, and what happened behind the scenes as well, Emily is a great person for the sport I like every words she said and I totally agree with her.
I still think the gray cloth looks horrendous. The blue was so much more appealing to the eye. It's like all these new houses nowadays, with those neutral gray tones in every room.
9 ball is great for TV. 10 ball is also great for TV. However, I think the other disciplines need exposure also. Straight pool, one pocket, bank pool. These are where some if the finest talent have come from, historically. The younger players tuning in should have exposure to these games in addition to 9 ball which, let's face it, is run and gun type pool. Perhaps I lean to the traditional side but we can't forget that a game like straight pool exists because it wasn't that long ago that that was the measuring stick for the greatest players in the world of pool. I think the multi discipline tournaments that happen every so often should get more attention and TV time also.
Problem is most of us shoot pool and when we’re at the table we’re looking at an orange five ball. So every time I watch it throws me off. Please take a poll and let the fans decide.
@@KarlBoyesPoolLife I remember that and it did get me. The powers that be recognized the problem and did something about it, which I appreciate. But with 1080p being the norm and picture/color quality only getting better, is it still an issue?
Changing the color of the balls screws with players attempting to play rotation…. Now they have to think, damn which color is next… Plus, how to I ask for the Orange Crush without an orange 5 ball??
Make the change back and simply say it was all just an experiment. Lighten up the blue, red, purple, green, and brown (7-ball). The 1, 5, 8 and 9 are fine. The Predator Arco II set is a perfect example. You will then have great differentiation from each ball while still staying with the traditional colors, except for the 7. Other companies can copy the colors. Great work, elsewhere... thanks!
I disagree about 10-ball, it's a great discipline and the beauty of pool is its diversity, with many different disciplines that would be a pity to lose. So it's good that Predator and CSI are promoting 10-ball, but Matchroom and Predator have to coordinate each other better about events dates.
big fan on the grey cloth and 4 inch pockets, not a fan of the 5 ball looking exactly like the 2 ball though, why not stick to the traditional 1 - yellow, 2 - blue, 3 - red, 4 - pink, 5 - orange , 6 - green, 7 - brown and yellow 9 stripe, its perfect that way.
I'm sorry her reasoning of 'professionalism' I don't buy it. It happened behind closed doors and he apologized to them, without her making a big deal of it nobody likely would have even known it happened. Also, making professional players better and making it look hard? Cmon, give me a break. Anybody watching already knows how hard this is and showing world class players missing shots just gets in their head and is embarrassing, not to mention now any amateur player who works hard but doesn't have access to 4" pockets is going up against even better already world class players, they have even less of a chance to be victorious.
I do like it when it's "straight-up" .... Questions (are asked) --- Answers (are given)!!!! Simple. Thanks!!! (on another note... LOL ---- Purple 4, Orange 5 [I know what I'm looking for/at]) Be Safe
Hi Karl, I understand the reduction of pocket size to give a challenge to the top players, but I think the break is not going in the same direction. 1 on the spot and break from where you want are the easiest possible conditions so break & runs are probably too easy for these monsters. What do you think about putting 9-ball on the spot and cueball in the box for these Matchroom events? Imho with winners break it would more correct.
I supposed the "purple 5" was ARAMITH's idea , not MATCHROOM, right? .However, if you really like purple color on TV , you can do the old school "purple 4" instead of the annoying purple 5. (see 1995 Mosconi , US OPEN ).
Purple 5 is a joke .. orange pops out nicely Em Frazier is literally just “okay” she feels she made a mistake sometimes with it but I’m not changing it cuz we don’t need to keep changing things even tho she just did. Why is a non pool player making any decisions?
These interviews are great. However, it is too early to say "best in the world". Europe and the USA is not the world. When most events are held in Europe, it is so easy for the local players as they can play in a ranking and non-ranking events back to back. Some can even drive home and sleep in their bed during events. It's a massive cost for players in Australia, New Zealand, Asia etc., to have to pay their way to go and play in the events. Yes, there are local qualifiers, but you have to pay your way to get to the qualifier (Australia is massive) and then again if you win. A possible solution is instead of any prize money, the winner should get the spot, free flights and accommodation. Even if Matchroom is footing the bill and has the local associations hold the events. Then you can call it the world when the entire world has the best chance to be involved.
As a pool player my biggest gripe has always been that there are so many rule sets between every league or tournament I enter as an amateur player. Love the extra pro tournaments coming up and the standardization that you are working to achieve but you need to understand who pool players are too. Characters and emotion from people like Jimmy White, Earl Strickland and John McEnroe are entertaining. We are Peaky Blinders not Monopoly tycoons.
He inmediately apologized and it was accepted.. he didn't refuse but couldn't inmediately pee. They could have waited 10 minutes or so. There were circumstances like the death of his mom and his marriage fell apart. Now he gets double punished and there wasn't even anything on camera. And he wrote 2 letters to apologize. And he took the test and was clean. While Billy Thorpe actually used drugs, got a 2 year ban last year but is playing anyway... some double standards here.
@@simonleroy9576 hockey players go on tantrums often smashing their sticks, swearing at officials. Appleton did a test a few weeks before a little excessive...other sports don't make players take so many drug tests

Both ideas are tied together: standardization and professionalism. Ultimately it's a way to get everyone on the same page and push things like the jab, poltiics, and the rest. Soon it will be players are suspended for what they say on social media or in their private lives. That may even be the case now for what I know. All downsteam from political agendas. For example Eurotours have nothing to do with Matchroom but they have Aramtith Pro Cup TV set since 20 years.
@@AngrierGorilla Funny thing is, I’ve never seen that set in person. I know they are used in some places but I don’t think they are as prevalent as you are suggesting.
The most popular set I’ve seen at houses, bars, and pool halls in my travels is the standard color Super Aramith Pro or Aramith Premium sets. And either way, none of the sets I’ve ever seen has a purple 5 ball. Let’s not lose focus on the important part.
@@MattPolandMI probably in US pool halls kept the traditional colors, while in Europe the Aramith TV set is dominant since 15 years or so
Change to the orange 5
Why did they change the 4 and 5 though? Why not just turn the 5 pink? I'm not being critical, but I'm curious about that thought process
because in the last 20 years the 4-ball has been pink, so they wanted to keep this number with the same color. But in doing so they chose a color that was the 4-ball before the Pro Cup set... so yes, it's a litlle confusing.
@@AngrierGorilla A lot confusing. The pink 4 ball is a vestige of low definition ESPN broadcasts. It’s long outserved it’s purpose. Like the Cyclop skittle balls. There’s room to tweak colors for TV but this isn’t it.
Congrats, Emily and Karl. Really enjoying these interviews. I hope it's a regular thing. Hearing about the growth of the tour and sport through these thoughtful questions and answers is exciting. Thank you Kevin
Karl, any chance of a orange 5 ball?

I think the reason is Darren didn't Play well Enough in WPC So he isn't invited, and More people would pick Wikitor Zenlinski over Darren.
@@22-nguyenhuuthinh32 I might be inclined to agree, but then saying some indirect stuff about professionalism is far more egregious!

Also keep this behind the scenes content going Karl, its brilliant.
Thanks John
Can someone Tell me whats the Issum with appleton?
The issue with the purple 5 is there are 2 or maybe 3 ball sets that have a purple 5 so it's confusing for most people who have seen a pool ball in their live.
The color of the ball is fine. I just appreciate that a company as big as matchroom is dumping money into pool and trying to take it to the level of snooker. I promise you the pro’s are happy to be playing in events where they don’t have to worry about getting paid
Speak truth to power Karl! Emily is a great sport too. Respect all round.
Why is Darren Appleton banned at the moment? Please can someone fill me in?
apparently he misbehaved during the world championship
@@AngrierGorilla thanks for the extremely accurate explaination 🤯
@@devbra5585 I'm always very precise. At your service.
The ball colors can stay the way they are now... just make the purple the 4 again and make the pink the 5. It is frustrating trying to predict a players pattern only to see them play to the pink when I expect them to play to the purple since that is the color every pool room uses.
She is a breath of fresh air to listen to
Matchroom and Emily are doing a great job! Please get rid of that horrible horrible purple 5 ball!
Karl you ask the best questions.
I respect your thoughts, but I couldn't agree any less here. Change is perpetual. If you cannot change, you will not grow. That is a fact of humanity.
The argument about the balls. I think we are not talking about changing the colors to the old way, but just change the numbers between the 4 and 5.
Since started watching just can’t get use to the dull grey colour . I miss the green pool uk and blue for 9 usa
Magic racks? Aren’t they just better…?
@@LvLdGhost No. It's a foreign object on the table used as an aid. It's sacrilegious in my opinion.

The classic Aramith colours are the ones that represent the game the best. Yellow 1, Blue 2, Red 3, Violet 4, Orange 5, Green 6, Brown 7, Black 8, White with a Yellow striped 9 alongside a glittering cue ball with red dots.😍❤
The black 9 ball is fine, but otherwise agree
Great interview. As a player I do like the grey cloth but don't like the purple 5 and pink 4, I prefer the traditional ball colors although I don't mind the black striped 9 ball. Can we possibly find out the size of the side pockets?

What did Darren do?
Does any body knows will there be possible to watch UK open on youtube?? Thank you
13:25 competition drives prize money up.
Karl was that Emily's hand holding the 4 & 5 balls in front of the 4 inch pocket picture ?
Yes
The tables should play as tough as possible. It's more exciting to watch if it's possible for a player to miss.
I can handle the felt but the balls need to be changed back thank you for everything you’ve done a great job Emily and Carl
They are not using felt. Its worsted cloth.
What did Darren do? I didn't see that match
He wasn't in the Masters this year.
Great job ‘Em make the pockets even tighter that way we know it’s the best of the best that are winning
Switch back the 4 and 5...switching the colours does nothing for TV as they are both insignificant in the game of pocket billiards
Thanks ranger
In my opinion, IF players are passing on a cut along the rail for something else because of pocket size, they are too small. I feel that is happening to a small degree. 4" is pushing it. That being said, they are missing at almost 10% which is a good thing. Look into breaking from the head spot. Nice work again.
If you make 9 ball a call-shot game with the 9 on the spot you are raising the standard without having to move to 10 ball. I see many money matches now played this way and it eliminates the flukes and luck.
What happened with Darren? She said something about misconduct?
He got pissed he had to take a piss test, so this Queen Cya got him fucked for the next 2 months.
So what did darren do?
What did Darren do exactly? I'm really curious. Anybody got video of it? Does it have to do with him organizing a pool players union?
She double punished him

I like this lady! I would ask her out to dinner and just let her talk to me the whole time. She won me over with that accent!
I hope they do revert back to the original colours of the balls.. Its too confusing
Sorry but I asked

Changing the color of the balls screws with players attempting to play rotation…. Now they have to think, damn which color is next…
Plus, how to I ask for the Orange Crush without an orange 5 ball??
Make the change back and simply say it was all just an experiment. Lighten up the blue, red, purple, green, and brown (7-ball). The 1, 5, 8 and 9 are fine. The Predator Arco II set is a perfect example. You will then have great differentiation from each ball while still staying with the traditional colors, except for the 7. Other companies can copy the colors. Great work, elsewhere... thanks!
What appleton match are they talking about exactly?
I disagree about 10-ball, it's a great discipline and the beauty of pool is its diversity, with many different disciplines that would be a pity to lose. So it's good that Predator and CSI are promoting 10-ball, but Matchroom and Predator have to coordinate each other better about events dates.
Love her passion towards our game.
Good job Karl, keep shootin' her with those hard ones.
big fan on the grey cloth and 4 inch pockets, not a fan of the 5 ball looking exactly like the 2 ball though, why not stick to the traditional 1 - yellow, 2 - blue, 3 - red, 4 - pink, 5 - orange , 6 - green, 7 - brown and yellow 9 stripe, its perfect that way.
Thanks Karl for the videos

Hi Karl, I understand the reduction of pocket size to give a challenge to the top players, but I think the break is not going in the same direction. 1 on the spot and break from where you want are the easiest possible conditions so break & runs are probably too easy for these monsters.
What do you think about putting 9-ball on the spot and cueball in the box for these Matchroom events? Imho with winners break it would more correct.
I mean yeh I hear you, my only dilemma is then your praying for random balls to go in, but I defo see your point
@@KarlBoyesPoolLife that would add some drama! 😉 thanks for the answer!
I supposed the "purple 5" was ARAMITH's idea , not MATCHROOM, right? .However, if you really like purple color on TV , you can do the old school "purple 4" instead of the annoying purple 5. (see 1995 Mosconi , US OPEN ).
4 ball is pink since 20 years
Purple 5 is a joke .. orange pops out nicely
Em Frazier is literally just “okay” she feels she made a mistake sometimes with it but I’m not changing it cuz we don’t need to keep changing things even tho she just did. Why is a non pool player making any decisions?
Exactly
So insulting officials, slamming cue case, refusing to take on a doping test because you're butthurt losing means "being a character" ?
@@MeganOHowe They actually do. Because it's random. Means can happen twice in a row, can happen once in a year. You guys are fangirling so much over someone that you support him being butthurt, having a trantrum and disrespecting officials just because he's gifted with a cue stick. Be fans, don't be fanatics. He's wrong, he deserves what happens. That's all.
That's why things are funded to begin with.
If your going to have a purple ball, it should be the 4. If your going to have an orange ball, it should be the five. It has been this way for decades. If your going to change colors, change them to something completely different like grey or pink. If your not going to change colors, please for god's sake put the colors on the appropriate balls.
